AU Meme - Day 30 - Real Life

redfiona99I can't really do a proper RL AU because I work in a really niche job. So instead, have the start of the RVD as a lab scientist AU.
He's almost got the lab set up just how he likes it. His new PhD student, first here, will be arriving soon, and once he's got her up and running, he'll start looking for a post-doc to help him manage the lab, and teaching, and the looking for more funding. The search for funding never stops.
He just needs to convince them that they want to let him move the ultra-centrifuge into the instrument room so he doesn't need to schlep across the bridge to the main biochemistry building every time he needs to use it.
He had hoped for a second ultracentrifuge, so as not to inconvenience the two people who use it in the other building, but the chances of that were dashed when Paul left.
Or when Paul was shoved out of the door, depending on whose version you believed.
Rob wants to believe Paul ran his mouth and got himself sacked, otherwise he's convinced Rob to come to an institute to work with him, despite knowing he was leaving ... again.
It's the again that would rankle.
He forgave Paul the first time because Paul really was worth all the hassle, convincing you to come to a place to work with him despite him leaving being the least of it. Paul tended to leave places chased by broken promises, financial irregularities, with half the academics raging about him and the other half of them completely star-struck.
In a world that used the term too much, Paul Heyman really was a visionary - certainly the only person who'd protect Rob from official interest in the legalities of his work - and that made him worth it.
