No. People have been lovely, especially since the break.

About the expected, with a few extra expenses due to the leg, and post-break yoghurt consumption. A yoghurt habit is more expensive than expected.

Many years ago

st_aurafina posted this link about writers being plotters or pantsers (https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1125856091261136896.html) specifically talking about George R. R. Martin vs the Game of Thrones show runners.

Obviously no one, not even GRRM, falls all into one category.

I am more a plotter than a pantser. I can't just sit down and go "okay, that's how this goes." I have to have a solid idea.

On the other hand, my initial idea is often an image, and then I work out how everyone got there, and where they go from there. I have to have a road map then I can sit down and write the damn thing.

But I know that if, while I'm writing, there is suddenly a castle in the road map that wasn't originally supposed to be there, I should probably include it, because that's the story telling me that character, concept or action needs to be there.

Probably the best example is The Time Between, which was written for the XMM ficathon to this great prompt "Erik and Charles or Erik/Charles. Anything about them both living at the school, daily life or mutant heroics. Any era or AU is fine; feel free to mix and match any canon you like, including comics."

So I read that prompt and go, "what sort of thing would make those two get back together? It's going to have to be something serious, something that threatens mutants."

That already tells me I'm writing something action/thrillery, feeling a bit like the middle section of First Class (which was the only nu-trilogy/quadrilogy film at that point).

Next point, why isn't Magneto just going to stop the problem himself? He's got a telepath, a teleporter, a shapeshifter and someone who can fly, plus him and Riptide. They can handle most things. There needs to be a reason they reach out. It's Magneto, it's going to have to be a damn good reason. Man doesn't seek help, unless something dire is threatening mutantkind.

The only person on Magneto's side he can't replace, in the sense of someone else in the team's powers can do something similar or the use of a power would lead to a similar effect is Emma Frost, which is why Emma Frost is the one who is injured. So it had to be the type of mission where a telepath was needed.

The first image I got was Alex thwapping the solid, really good quality paper that Magneto and Mystique sent their missive on.

So I write from the arrival of the letter, then there's the explanation of the why, and all the characters interacting (one reviewer did spot that this is a series of character vignettes held together by plot).

In the initial thought, Magneto had been given the info on the government's plan by an undetected mutant FBI agent who happened to have had the file cross his desk. Completely inconspicuous character, looks a bit like a less sinister Victor Freeze from Batman: The Animated Series.

And I'm writing the scene where they go to visit the informant, and it has to be a bar so no one knows that they all know each other, and he's really scared, and I realise that there's already an FBI character, who knew about mutants, and might see this sort of file, who could remember Magneto, but couldn't remember where Charles was now, and was very resourceful and would somehow attract Magneto's attention if she needed it. And Magneto would trust Moira not to be lying, not about this (because I don't think he liked her, but I think he at least accepted she was more on their side than not, and that's the most he hopes for from non-mutants, and that he'd trust her if she came to him with this information) in a way he wouldn't about any given FBI agent.

And Moira coming back, and why she couldn't take the file to Charles, is a far more interesting story than random FBI dude who happens to be a mutant.

Moira was not in this fic originally, but she made it a better fic.

The AU meme did what I wanted it to do - keep me posting regularly. I will see if I can brush up some of the mini-fics to make them more generally shareable, without impacting [mysterious project].

The posting regularly is important though - I find it helps my writing overall.

In that spirit, I will try to post every Friday - barring socialising, fencing, and other similar things.

I'm being useless with regard to this meme again because ... this is yet another thing which doesn't interest me.

I think it really is one of those things where it either pings for you, or doesn't. Ex-boss's husband, deserted island stuff was completely his bag - TV show I think was called 'Naked and Afraid' where they left two people stranded naked + 1 item of their choice each, he loved it. Me I wouldn't even watch. But I think it's a personality thing because he also liked building and repairing things (I know where my talents aren't) and had rallied across the Sahara.

Wherein I think the meme author uses a different meaning of slide of life than I do.

To me, slice of life means, "day in the life of the character where nothing more major happens than the things that need to happen for that character to get to the next day. No explosions, no adventures, nothing but normal."

I think the author means what I call "mundane AUs" so you know, coffee shops etc.

I don't do those. I think it's because I have done those sort of jobs (and hated them, and ran away screaming). There's the possibility of a more "my actual previous career" AU on the far horizon, but I would say not in the next 6 months.

Much like what I said about Hogwarts AUs, I think fandom fusions tend to be used " to play with "what's the most important facet of this character", "what's a hidden facet of this character that I want to explore", "what if half of them makes them a perfect fit for group 1 but the other half into group 2, how does that work?", "if I split this character away from the characters they are usually with, do they still become friends because destiny says so" etc."

All the things this character is, would they still be that way in this other way and place.

I've finished two proper fusion fics, I think fandom fusions just aren't the way my brain writes, I want to write more the situation that the characters are actually in.

One was done very much in the spirit of what I said up there, For My Wings I've Been Searching, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles queer gen fic, where the original lgbtfest prompt was "Crossover: His Dark Materials fusion with any fandom, It’s hard to be closeted when people can tell what you are just by looking at your daemon.", but I wanted some world hoppers because I think having a daemon would really change you a lot.

The other one was not - A Bad Night which was written for

opera142, and was wrestling fused into Raffles because I needed a reason for Jericho to be Regal's butler - and probably because I'd just been reading Raffles at the time.

So part of the problem is that I was brought up on the fairytales where our hero meets three animals and is nice to them so he wins glory and the girl. Or our heroine meets three animals or witches or various other supernatural beings and is nice to them and wins glory and the prince while her mean stepsister is mean to them and suffers.

(It is noticeable that male heroes get animals, while female heroes get a greater mixture including disembodied heads.)

There is a sort of general message of "be nice to people", which did sink in, but it does mean I don't have the same urge to write fairytale AUs as some other people.

The nearest I have to an idea is Elias and Ezekial being twins and one of them being kidnapped/turned into something by a wicked witch and the other one having to rescue him.

Um, yeah, this is one of those AUs I don't understand. I mean, I didn't have a totally horrible time at school, but I have no reason to set fic there for the characters to be schoolchildren, and I've found most teacher AUs don't work because either the characters don't work for the role or because the authors don't capture the feel of schools quite right. (Notable exception, there was a really good Law and Order AU where they were teachers instead of police, would link but have managed to lose it).

The other interesting thing I find, although this is probably changing with the rise of K-Pop fandoms, is how often even fans from non-US countries set high school AUs in generic US high schools.

Antonio prided himself on his navigation, so he carefully steered between the twin rocks that would dash him, not being close to Sebastian, and being close to him. I'm going to start at the end.

When I came back from watching it at the cinema I looked it up on wiki, and found out that it's based on a book (Night Train by Martin Amis), and that book is a parody. Which makes the film make so much more sense. Unfortunately, the film lacked that reflexive self-aware quality of good parody. There's a beautiful quote from the Torygraph that I think sums the film up perfectly - "This New Orleans-set detective thriller from Carol Morley pulls off an undesirable yet weirdly impressive coup: the twist ending to its murder mystery is somehow simultaneously preposterous and obvious, like a clown car parping and swerving its way towards you from the far end of an airstrip." That statement is true of everything that happens in the film. You think, oh, they're using this tired trope in this really unsubtle way to subvert it. And then they don't. It's not just one tired trope, it's all of them. In sequence. In obvious sequence.

It wouldn't be so bad, I mean basic thrillers are ten-a-penny, yeah, they're not good, but they're not bothersome either, they're Sunday-afternoon-plans-have-washed-out films. But this keeps putting on these airs and graces, all "I am a serious film, making serious statements. I AM ART!" when it's really not. It tries to be clever and turns out dumb. Also the physics is terrible. But I suspect that's deliberate, because the physics they use is all trope-y and we're back to "tired trope played straight."

It's a waste of some lovely cinematography and a good soundtrack. And some solid performances. Patricia Clarkson as Mike Hoolihan gives enough mystery and enigmatic to be engaging despite being all but one of the hard-bitten female detective clichés. Toby Jones is Toby Jones so you know he's good. Aaron Tveit's Detective Silvero does a good job of sleazy and sinister ... like every other male character. Basically, the female characters suffer and the men are sleazy and sinister. It's very thin that way.

It's one of those rare films I'd actually disrecommend.

One good thing did come out of the film - I have finally found a framework for what I want female Gambit to look like. So for years, I've had a couple of ideas for a gender-swapped Rogue 'n' Gambit story but I could never figure out what Gambit looked like. I've seen photos of several female Gambit cosplayers and they're all amazing but I couldn't get a feel for how girl-Gambit would move and then I saw this and Patricia Clarkson is it. There's this moment when she smiled and turned her head just slightly away, it was full-force girl-Gambit and all "I will follow you through whatever to do whatever fun thing you have planned even though I am sure it is dangerous". I have female Gambit sorted. Now just to get to writing the story.
