AU Meme - Day 16 - Superheroes

To an extent, this is the inverse of the mundane AU. You're less likely to see superhero AUs nowadays when half to three-quarter of characters in the largest fandoms are superheroes, because they cease to be AUs.

I mean, of my big fandoms, it's superheroes and mutants, or Dr Who/Torchwood and Buffy which is not far enough away from superpowered (time travel, immortality, slayers, vampires and witches) for me to not count them as superheroes, or wrestlers. And I am trying not to give Chris Jericho more ideas.

What I do remember is a really cool fic exchange / theme / thinger that I think Penknife ran which was X-men with different powers. So many of those fics really explored how much of the various mutant's personalities was them, their powers, and how their powers had shaped their lives. [Unfortunately can't remember the author but there was a truly stupendous Jean and Scott fic where they'd been born with each other's powers that I can still visualise chunks of.] [There were several excellent fics in that exchange thingy but that one was extra special.]

(Writing this has made me ponder a Rogue n Gambit power switch. I presume you are imagining the same Remy "Ladykiller" LeBeau that I am. And he leans even more heavily into either Louis du Lac or Lestat, depending which way you want to take the character.)

Oh no, Scott as a telepath! T-T

Though actually, I feel like he wouldn't be that different? His kinda defining thing is living with the constant & oppressive knowledge that his powers could hurt someone if he wasn't controlled at all times.... which is kinda also true for telepathy? Meanwhile, I feel like Jean was always way more willing to experiment and explore with her powers...

Also wait, so then is Havok also a telepath?

From my immediate memory (which is still oddly clear given it's been yoinks since I read it) no mention of Havok at all (could well have been a first 3 films movie-verse fic) - but yes, presuming everything else stacks up, he'd have been a telepath.

In the fic, they sort of "bury" Scott in the basement because that's where it's mentally "quietest", and that Xavier can't find a way to help Scott turn off other people's thoughts really bugs Xavier. Scott is still very much Scott so he wants to be better and to be "the perfect son" but he can't and Xavier can't stop a small amount of frustration because he's only human and ...

Jean was interesting because she's still Jean but her "and I killed everyone" moment still happened to she reaches out to Scott despite everything and he tries to be there for her, despite everything, because he's Scott Summers and ... it was very good.
