Have some Avengers in a fantasy-verse. I'm sorry, I have dragons on the brain
"You know, I'm not sure how riding a bright red dragon counts as stealth," came the shout from the rocky outcrop. Natasha was glad that she was used to Barton appearing out of nowhere because falling off your dragon is embarrassing; at least this low to the ground she was unlikely to be injured if she fell.
She was almost convinced Barton was a wind-walker he was that good at sneaking up on people, but she never saw him do it. On the other hand, that was part of of the point with wind-walkers.
Unusually for her, she likes the not knowing, it makes it easier to pretend that they aren't friends, this collective of ... well whatever they were, a band against the vile sorcerer Thanos.
Part of it is because she likes and trust Barton, possibly because they spend the most time together since Barton is only other one of their group who tries to find out what's going on before leaping into battle so they're often on recon together.
The Black Widow, the Red Death and an archer born never to miss.
Neither of them are particularly fond of team work - dragon riders and those born kissed by fate tend not to, it makes life easier that way - but stopping Thanos the Sorcerer is a worthy goal, and exposing themselves the way they wouldn't normally is worth it.
Barton leads her to the cavern where Fury is holding court.
Fury is fascinating. There's no trace of magic around him at all, and here he was, more power at his disposal, voluntarily, than most kings could ever dream of. Sitting at Fury's round table were the battle-scarred Prince of the Northern Clans, the nigh on invulnerable Shield of the West, and their very own sorcerer.
None of them are comfortable about working with a sorcerer, and Strange the sorcerer does nothing to put them at ease. Even beyond the usual, entirely reasonable suspicion of magic users, there's the air of necromancy around what Strange does.
Thor is the twitchiest around him, but none of them like working with him, Natasha thinks Strange prefers it that way.
There's no time for further thoughts on that now though, as Fury calls them to order. His spies have more information on Thanos's latest plans and the team will be needed to stop them.
1) I am aware Tony Stark is not in here yet - blacksmith-type technomages are the kind of people you meet on the journey not at the start.
2) If you think the Black Widow training is harsh, wait till you learn about what the dragon riders have to do.
3) Yes, we'd go into the whole push-pull of "awesome power of magic users" vs everyone's fear and terror of everyone touched by magic/fate.
4) Places this could go:
Thanos the Sorcerer has a side kick enchanter and we discover exactly why Thor gets twitchy whenever magic is mentioned.
The Shield of the West sees his decidedly dead best friend in the armies of evil. Cue much discussion about whether it is him (the enemy has enchanters [cue Thor feet shuffle]) and what it means if it is really him.
