She supposes it's a side effect of the sort of person SHIELD hires. Even people who are theoretically desk work only are trained to a level that would be field-certified for the CIA and FBI.

They have to be tough, independent, determined.

Most of them use this as an excuse to be stubborn, obstructive and generally impossible, particularly to medics who are only trying to get them to sit their annual physicals.

She doesn't like to think about the various schemes she's had to use to get people to come in.

She doesn't like to use the easiest one, of just getting their senior agent to make them come, not least of all because she wants it to be a choice not a demand, and she knows several of the senior agents do not look kindly on people they need to make do basic tasks. That she saves for people who have gone a whole year past the time of their yearly check-up.

Well, they're supposed to be yearly, but there's the obvious room they have to give to the deep undercover operatives. And the people who are on active duty when the year rolls round. And the people who are already on medical leave as the year turns.

So there is wiggle room, but it's not indefinite.

She gets particularly annoyed at the agents who deliberately get themselves put on missions when their medicals are due, and yes, she knows who they are, because for secret agents, they're damn obvious about it.

More and more agents are delaying their medicals and she thinks she knows why.

The New York Incident.

It's not the aliens. People have been oddly okay with the aliens. And the fact that aliens exist might explain a few things about the R&D teams. The thing that’s thrown everyone off kilter is the being attacked by people that they know.

People are justifiably freaking out. And freaking out even more when she suggests therapy. Which is probably also a side effect of the sort of people SHIELD hires.

Forcing people to see a therapist doesn't work so she suggests it and lets people make up their own mind.

Even the people who might realise that seeing a therapist is in their own best interest are terrified of it leaving a paper trail. They're secret agents and there's nothing they hate more than paperwork, including gunshot wounds. There has to be paperwork because there needs to be accountability, as much to make sure she's giving people the best possible care as to keep track of what treatment any one person needed.

But she's a medic in Colonel Nick Fury's SHIELD, so there's paperwork, and there's paperwork. She got someone in cryptography to write her a programme. Her notes are locked, and need the programme, a password and her thumbprint to be unlocked. She's carefully got it out onto the grapevine that she's taken extra measures.

It's helping, there's a few of the maybes who have sidled next to her and asked for the therapist's phone number.

It’s unorthodox, but it's working, and that's what counts.

This is great, and what a difficult job to be doing! The people who most need you are the ones most avoidant. And then there's the ones who aren't human at all right now...
