Because HMV had a foreign films sale, I managed to get Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, Oldboy and Lady Vengeance for £7.99 ($13.55/ 14.41 AusD). Which is totally for the win because 1 - I <3 Park Chan-wook's directing and 2) Lady Vengeance is his best film. I would recommend it thorough, with the caveat of read the warnings.

On top of that, while I was on Amazon looking to buy 'Rewind The Film' and 'Futurology', I spotted Rome, seasons 1 & 2, on sale for £17 ($29/ 31 AusD), so I snapped that up, because that's been £60 within the last two years and therefore totally counts as a bargain.

That was about it as far as successful shopping missions go. It turns out I didn't need a new phone, I'd just accidentally blocked my Mum's phone (which I will hear the end of some time after doomsday), Next hadn't shipped the dress I wanted to try on to all their shops yet and I still can't fit into a size 14. Actually, it's possible that my waist can but my thighs definitely can't so I am left with the fencer's problem of trying to find nice belts because our waists and thighs are out of proportion. That or menswear and I suspect New Look are having a sale ...

Rome

So, thanks to the fabulous N and S, I managed to finally see Passover (season 2, episode 1). I was only 7 years late.

It was every bit as amazing as you'd all told me.

Spoilers )

In short, Rome yay!

Day 19 - Best TV show cast

I am going to use this as an excuse to mention Rome in this meme. Because there were no bad actors in it. When Tobias Menzies (Brutus) is the nearest thing you have to a weak link, that is one heck of a stacked cast.

The Other Days )

~~~~
As well as working on the PhD I have been working on some fic, some of which is now finished (finally, two years late in one case). With a couple of them it was just getting past a hurdle and then it was plain sailing from there (plain running maybe, to keep the analogy going). Seriously, with one fic, more got written last night than had been written for the past year.
Other ones have got stuck at interesting places (including one I can't talk about because it's a gift and it is stuck beyond the speaking of, argh!). The one that amuses me the most is a Sherlock Holmes (RDJ version) fic that was supposed to be a PWP. It has developed plot. I am writing a whole case to go with it, to the point where I'm not that interested in the porn bit. It's still going in, because the case doesn't make any sense without the porn, but it's now become plot with porn instead of porn without plot.
Sadly, it doesn't take away from the nightmare I had last night where, because my library books were overdue, I couldn't graduate and it lead me into a life of ruin. I think it's mostly PhD stress making itself know.
Fitness
The fitness drive is being complicated by my body being odd. You know the thing they tell you about how to weigh yourself at around the same time every day because otherwise you pick up diurnal variation, which can be as much as 2 lb. Make that 4 lb and that's what's entirely possible for me even if I weigh myself at the same time +/- half an hour. I have been assured that this is not a good thing by at least a couple of med students, but that's always been the way I've been.
Saw the Fast and the Furious 3 - Tokyo Drift.
Whoever told me Han was the best thing in it was so very right, either that or DK's paintjob or the car stunts. They were some lovely stunts.
I don't know if it's just because most of the other actors were not from the US, but the lead guy's accent stood out a mile. To the point of wondering if it's a put on accent. (Have looked it up. It's not. Even more of a shocker, that's Caleb from American Gothic!)
Also,
[spoilers] I wish to point out something that I shall refer to as the Toretto effect. It refers to the way that anything Vin Diesel says while playing Dom Toretto sounds like innuendo. And that this effect is doubled if it is dialogue about a male character. The one that really sealed it was, when he turns up at the end of the film and says that he'd raced against Han, and lead character dude goes 'I didn't think that Han was into American muscle cars', to which Dom replies 'He did when I knew him'. And it's like, there was no way that wasn't innuendo.
[/spoilers]
However, Tokyo Drift does break with the previous films in that its entirely possible for the plot to work without the assumption that the two lead male characters are romantically involved.
Brutal Legend rocks
I fear that should actually be 'rawks'. Very silly fun game, not the most user-friendly of playing systems but, as I say so very much fun and very clever.
I knew I recognised the new doctor from Being Human from somewhere
It's Cleopatra from Rome. She has a very distinctive voice, it was just odd seeing her in modern day clothing.
I'd love to be able to confirm my suspicion but that would involve the BBC actually putting up cast lists.
(Insert Keyboard Mashing) )
So both looking forward to and not looking forward to Sunday's episode.
Due to technical issues, I missed episode 8 of Rome. Anyone who knows of anywhere where one may be able to acquire it in a digital format that may involve downloading, would be gratefully thanked if they'd tell me where.
Technical issues = NTL/Virgin Internet and TV both breaking down within a day of getting them, down to the point of requiring an engineer. Mysteriously the phone still works.
Other than that:
Dear Andreas Kloeden, please forgive me any and all things that I have ever said that cast aspersions on your character. You're a wonderful, wonderful man.
(In other words, the loon that's carrying on with a fractured cocxyx somehow managed to lead Vino up the mountain yesterday, doing one of the best, most dedicated lead out man jobs I ever did see.)
redfiona99: (Default)
Dear Vino, I know you always have one cruddy stage per tour, but did you have to fall off your bike quite so spectacularly. Although at least you're better off that poor Kloeden. A sore cocxyx is the last thing you want when you're riding a bike.
Something that interests me about Rome is that, unlike a lot of shows, our heroes are earthy, they're interested in food and drink and sex and there's mud and grime and gore, so in order to separate people out they've had to do the opposite of what's usually done. Usually if a character in a programme or film expresses anything like an ejoyment of the pleasures of the flesh then they are automatically a bad guy. In this our heroes love these things so the least human characters are shown to enjoy them less e.g. Octavian, who's two sex scenes have both been fade to blacks, which is odd in this show, and he's about the only male character we've never seen kill someone.
It intrigues me.
Heroes - after they show the trailer for the next Rome they've been hyping up Heroes, which may well be replacing it in the schedules. I am very intrigued by the trailer.
redfiona99: (Rome)
First of all let me lambast the director - Dear Sir, the thing I like about Rome, is that it's very artfully been artless. No frills directing and the like. I approve of this. I disapprove of your flimmery directorial style.
I feel that the amount of stuff going on warrants a break down into points:
Gaia )
If we've not converted Opera yet, I think that episode should do it.
The rest of the Vorenus/Pullo household )
House of Servilla )
House of Timon )
House of Caesar, and associated persons )
Anyone know who played Herod, IMDB are being useless on that front.
redfiona99: (Rome)
How you can tell this was a filler episode )
So I am both looking forward immensely to the last 4 episodes and feeling utter dread because I have grown attached to these characters and do not want to know what terrible fate HBO has in store for them.
Sorry for the excess of Rome-ness only the BBC are showing 2 episodes a week, and I am therefore giddy and excitable
And possibly in love with Agrippa )
Bring on Philipi.
I know I should talk about Dr. Who, but that was meh while this was good.
The Tortoise and the Hare )
Having seen the trailer for the next episode, I can totally see why they changed Octavians. While I shall hear nothing against Max Pirkis, he'd not be able to stand shoulder against shoulder with James Purefoy.
It were good )
Other than that, the baboon sex scene was fantastic.
Finally getting season 2 over here, even if I accidentally missed the first episode :P
But never mind that, the second one was plenty good enough )
