Rome
So, thanks to the fabulous N and S, I managed to finally see Passover (season 2, episode 1). I was only 7 years late.
It was every bit as amazing as you'd all told me.
The bit that got me was Posca crying over his master's body.
I loved how guilty Anthony looked because he could have intervened and didn't.
There's something admirable about Atia and her absolute determination that her family would survive. I did like that Timon immediately rushed round to help her and was completely sincere about it. I am sort of sad that his story got cut for time related reasons later on.
The lighting for the scenes inside Caesar's home was fantastic. Calpurnia is as bad as Vorenus when it comes to sticking to the traditions. Actually, that reminds me of one of the things I like most about Rome. The women are allowed to have their foibles just as much as the men.
I also don't blame Calpurnia for spitting at Servilla. Who, of course, has to be invited to the funeral.
Of course Caesar left his estate and name to Octavian, Anthony, he knows you'll hate the job, and that you'll be terrible at it.
And of course, Octavian has a plan. I like that he knows he's going to have to get both Anthony and Atia on-side, because Anthony won't agree unless Atia does, and Octavian knows he's not as good at public speaking as Anthony is (and that he'll look ridiculous next to Brutus who has done something at this point while Octavian is still a boy in everyone's eyes). Also that the way to get his mother on-side is to point out that if she doesn't do it his way, Servilla wins.
And of course Anthony can walk into the home of his enemy, threaten them and come out victorious. (And slitting Quintus's throat. Don't try to kill Anthony, either succeed or don't bother making the attempt.)
I actually really like them not showing the "Friends, Romans, Countrymen" bit because it wouldn't have fitted with the rest of the series. And I love the commentary from Fulmen's man. And Fulmen's reaction.
Now, onto the Vorenus mess. Because it is a mess, and it's not particularly anyone's fault. Actually, can I put that down as something else I liked about the show, that everyone is given their weight as a person, because Niobe's death is as important as Caesar's.
I also appreciate how they got round the "we don't have enough money to film this fight" by just having a very violent soundtrack. And it worked, because the level of violence the audience was imagining was spectacular.
I did like that Pullo's first reaction to hearing the Caesar died was to steal the messenger's horse, grab Eirene and head straight back to Rome because he knows that that means Vorenus is in trouble and will need his help, even if it is only to give Vorenus a decent burial.
In short, Rome yay!
