A mixture of things
Feb. 5th, 2011 08:49 pmI have been sleeping chronically badly, which has lead to me getting up late, which leads to me not being able to sleep at night, which leads to me sleeping badly. Yay, vicious cycle.
The problem isn't creeping insomnia, or rather, it's not just creeping insomnia, it's that I have vivid dreams. Sometimes it's not so bad, like a couple of weeks ago, I had a nice dream where I could smell things, if you understand what I mean, not just the usual sight and sound but smell too (and touch). Unfortunately, sometimes it's not so good, like last night's where I was in the RDJ Sherlock Holmes 'verse, and Holmes had gone missing. I was helping Watson find him, because he was urgently needed because someone was going round using acid to melt people in the streets (for reasons unknown, people melting has been a feature of my dreams since I was 3). We couldn't find him, and there were a couple of run-ins with various thugs and Watson was sitting on a bench in a London Station (unidentified during the dream, but looking back on it, probably Baker Street) and was all bloodied and beaten up. He just looked so miserable that I had to give him a hug. Of course, that's when Holmes appears, and then there is further derrer-doing. Not exactly the recipe for a good night's sleep.

I have been watching the Six Nations. Obviously I'm a bit upset for Wales and there's no way Ireland ought to have beaten Italy, although if Italy can maintain that level of performance in the other matches I can see them winning a couple. My favourite photo has to be this one - http://brightnshinythings.tumblr.com/post/3128771713/my-favourite-thing-about-this-how-happy-the The Italian photographers look so happy.
Saw most of the Scotland v France game. France did that think they do where they're awful one match and brilliant the next. Unfortunately for Scotland, they caught France on a good day. That being said, Scotland played well.
The next round of games are going to be interesting.

Film Meme:
Day 20 - A moving (emotional) scene
Emotional how? I mean, there's films that have hit me so hard that I refuse to watch them again (hello, Green Mile) and films that make me cry every time I watch them (Gladiator). Films that make me smile and laugh, and cackle with devious glee. Once again, the question is too broad.

Dreams and Meme
Jan. 5th, 2011 07:41 pmI had an odd dream a couple of nights ago. Not bad, just odd. I must have been freaking out about my future prospects so my brain came up with a dream where one of my old supervisors decided to give me a pep talk on the matter. In a pub. This would be odd enough, but it was my undergrad project supervisor, so not the first person I'd think of in that role. Not that he wasn't and isn't wonderfully supportive, he's just shy and not outgoing.

Character meme re-run, originally purloined from Joanne because she finds the best fandom memes.
Give me a character name and I'll answer at least one of all of (but you don't have to put a wild card one in if you don't have one) the following things about him or her in another post.
1) Why I like him/her.
2) Why I dislike him/her.
3) What plot I'd use in a fic about him/her.
4) What superpower he/she would have.
5) Who would be his/her ideal partner.

TV meme and some fic talk
Aug. 31st, 2010 07:34 pmDay 19 - Best TV show cast
I am going to use this as an excuse to mention Rome in this meme. Because there were no bad actors in it. When Tobias Menzies (Brutus) is the nearest thing you have to a weak link, that is one heck of a stacked cast.
( The Other Days )
~~~~
As well as working on the PhD I have been working on some fic, some of which is now finished (finally, two years late in one case). With a couple of them it was just getting past a hurdle and then it was plain sailing from there (plain running maybe, to keep the analogy going). Seriously, with one fic, more got written last night than had been written for the past year.
Other ones have got stuck at interesting places (including one I can't talk about because it's a gift and it is stuck beyond the speaking of, argh!). The one that amuses me the most is a Sherlock Holmes (RDJ version) fic that was supposed to be a PWP. It has developed plot. I am writing a whole case to go with it, to the point where I'm not that interested in the porn bit. It's still going in, because the case doesn't make any sense without the porn, but it's now become plot with porn instead of porn without plot.
~~~~
Sadly, it doesn't take away from the nightmare I had last night where, because my library books were overdue, I couldn't graduate and it lead me into a life of ruin. I think it's mostly PhD stress making itself know.

TV meme: Day 17 - Favourite mini-series
One of the problems is that in the UK, most of our series are mini (six episodes per series) or were until recently. I still prefer shorter series, because, while longer series give your story longer to breathe, it also means you've got to fill a lot more time, and it quite often leads to mid-season dulls.
Also, it's really hard to remember to be in at the right time every week, which is fine if you've got a TV recorder (or other *cough* methods) but is a real pain if you don't.
( The Other Days )
~~~~
I have been having 'interesting' dreams recently. Some of them have been nice (there was a lovely summery one set in Burton on the Water featuring time travel) and some of them not so much (hello, Kafka-esque beaurocracy last night).
~~~~
I'm slowly tagging old entries (one a day) and it's interesting reading the ones from the start of the PhD now that I'm coming to the end of it. My, I used to be so optimistic and bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

Jane Eyre, Dreams and a meme
Sep. 27th, 2008 03:59 pmOn wishtheworst's recommendation, I read Jane Eyre. The first thing I want to say is that there was nothing wrong with it. It's well written, and it's not the language that the problem. Nor is it the characters. I loved Jane, I like that she's not perfect, she's tempted by things and that she's got a judgemental streak. Quite frankly I want to take her out to tea and cakes. And I like Rochester. He's the kind of decent rotter who resembles many of my friends. I adored Adele and her pretty pink princessiness. I felt vaguely disturbed by St. John, which I'm reasonably sure is what I'm supposed to feel (matters not helped by him looking excessively like Kim Newman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Newman) in my head). So yes, solid, well written, interesting characters. It didn't do anything for me though. My collegue V saw me reading it and we got talking and he feels the same way. There's nothing wrong with the book, but we're just out of sympathy with it.

I've always had lucid dreams, which creates confusion when I can't tell the difference between things that have happened in the real world, and things that have happened in a dream. They've been getting worse recently. Last Wednesday, I thought my Mum was trying to shake me away. Thankfully I was with it enough to know that she was in a different part of the country so I told not-real Mum to go away. She didn't and continued to try and shake me awake, much to my annoyance.
Last night, I had a what I assume to be entirely imaginary housemate do the same thing.
Dear sub-concious - STOP IT.
~~~~
The first sentences of the last 20 fics I've finished
( Under here )
Overall average word count = 16
Average for the oldest 10 = 18.6
Average for the newest 10 = 13.4
However that includes one massive outlier (105 words), if that's removed it becomes:
Overall average = 12
Average for the oldest 10 = 9
Average for the newest 10 = 13.4
So I might be getting longer but not by much.
2 of the longest 4 are smut. 3 of the shortest 4 are gen-fics. I don't think there's a pattern though.
More English-y stuff. Well, I everything I write is third person limited. One of these days I'll try omniscient narrator, but I fear it's an experiment that will end badly. The two most verbose starts are from limited POV of Randy Orton and Shakespeare. Not a traditional combination. 4 out of the 20 start with speech. Most of them use something in the in media res end of things. There is a situation, and it will be explained, probably in the opening paragraph, but not in the first sentance. I write in the just past quite a lot.
Hideous errors spotted that I now wish to correct = 1.
Mostly wrestling
Dec. 22nd, 2007 12:14 amAlthough first news of a truly fucked up dream, wherein Mother Dearest was pregnant and getting married to Kid Rock.
Yeah, I'm thinking of checking what I ate before bed and swearing never to eat it again.
~~~~
But on to wrestling. First Smackdown ( because it will always be my favourite )
Then I watched Bottom Line and mostly everything I wish to say can be conveyed with the non-spoilery I <3 Jericho, Flair, ( And the one spoiler )
Saw some of TNA but in the usual way (i.e. chaotic due to shopping) so it was even crazier than usual even if I wish to face-palm severely over the main event of the Christmas episode ( Because )
Also Eric Young is adorable.
I also caught the one before Turning Point (hence at least part of the confusion) and just want to say how damn good AJ and Tomko are. Tomko just does world-weary so well, and AJ's so earnest.
I also really want to punch Team 3D in the mouth for talking smack about the X-division.

Seriously never sleeping again
Mar. 15th, 2007 12:56 pmAfter a rather long week, I decided that I'd picked the wrong month to give up caffine. Cue the better part of a 500 ml bottle of Pepsi max and a rather shambolic mochaccino. So I felt reasonably human again.
Could get to sleep though, but that's not exactly unusual, even if I haven't had enough caffine to stun a horse and been to a rather tense quiz.
Did finally drift off. Had the usual slightly odd dream, very fight club, random wrestlers and snooker players, nothing too wierd. Anyway, the alarm goes off and I go back to sleep. Oops. Anyway, have very wierd dream, with slightly more sex n death n weirdness than usual. And also Sean Bean. Anyways, the end of the dream went to strange odd places that I wasn't willing to follow it to, and I'm starting to think that a psychiatrists appointment might be called for.

Jan. 11th, 2006 01:35 amSorted the gmail problem out, I have to access the account differently.
Sent off first part of project write-up. Tomorrow I must work on my Glasgow application and possibly my Manchester one. Oh and do some packing.
I hate packing.
My subconcious really doesn't need to send me dreams where I'm having sex with the Rolling Stones. For the record, my brain seems to think Mick Jagger would be boring in bed and Keith Richards would be fun. I, for one, wouldn't mind trying to prove or disprove the latter.

Aug. 26th, 2005 04:21 pmAm back to broken up sleep and Pepsi. Damn!
Did have a really cool dream that was kind of madly Blackadder/Monty Python/Harry Potter cross-over-ish with added Musketeers and random actors.
Saw House. It was good. It was the episode "Sports Medicine" and now I want to know if the person who wrote that episode was female, because the argument Wilson and House had was done in the female way, not in the male way. (I've had that argument with quite a few people, men tend to do it differently)
Also I'd like to know why fandom everyone hates Chase? Because I like him. Sure, he's a cocky little so and so, but so what. (Will not go onto rambling discussion of how each of the Houselets represents a particular facet of House - Cameron is his heart and soul and other soft, squishy bits, Foreman is his doctorial brilliance, and Chase is his confidence.)

Vampires, dreams, Eastenders and RAW
Feb. 3rd, 2004 03:19 pmIn my on going attempt at avoiding doing work I'm supposed to be doing, I shall now discuss the only vampire film ever that isn't in the least bit scary, ( John Carpenter's Vampires )
Basically, it's a decent film that I would recommend for a couple of good scenes and one great scene.
General opinion is that its a misogynistic film because the only female characters are either hookers or vampires. Which is balderdash. Haven't the idiot critics considered that maybe the only women the characters know are vampires and hookers, because basically they're a drifting mercenary army. It's not the sort of lifestyle that lends itself to deep meaningful relationships, really how many women are going to go steady and/or marry a man who is never there, and has to deal with the threat of imminent death (his own or his collegues) every day? Very few, plus I'm betting the Vatican doesn't pay out a pension to widows.
Plus, I really wish some so called feminists would stop complaining about films, because there are more important battles to be won, like equal pay. Once we've got that sorted then there's time for pointlessness like criticising films.
Getting off my high horse now.
Other than that I had a really odd dream last night, possibly because I'd had a big dinner, I always get more vivid dreams after that.
( Cue dream )
What else, hmm, well according to a friend, Dennis in Eastenders is going to turn out to be gay. Which would come under highly unlikely things like Casanova being outed by a historian. Because Dennis seems to chase after women (even the one who turned out to be his half-sister) with a distinct passion.
And, the icing on the cake is that they're apparently going to have Dirty Den being a-okay with this. Dirty Den, unreconstructed throwback to 1979, being okay with it. The illogic is great. Although if it does happen (which I doubt) I'd love to see that conversation.
The most troubling thing about it would be that it means the Eastenders scriptwriters would have been reading my mind. A couple of days ago, Andy (who was married to Kat Slater - I think) had resurfaced on the run from someone and Sam Mitchell gave him somewhere to stay (and a bit more). The Mitchells had been drawing up battle-lines against the Watts' for some time now (involving firebombing, pubs, clubs, putting people in jail and random acts of violence) [I think Den took Lisa's (Phil Mitchell's ex-wife's] side in a dispute against Sam Mitchell (Sister of the aforementioned Phil) and it's all escalated from there.] Personally I don't think the Mitchell's know what to do if they're not drawing battlelines against someone.
Anyway, Nisha said this was bound to turn into Romeo and Juliet somewhere along the line. She pegged Dennis and Sam for the star-crossed couple. Utterly unbidden into my mind came the thought that Andy and Dennis would make a far hotter couple. Because yikes, they're both good looking men. Actually neither of them are classically pretty, they're both more in the roguish charm category.
Admittedly how ever nice the mental pictures are (and since I probably won't be able to get decent pictures, the mental picture is really nice) it's not going to happen. No mainstream programme with half a brain would do that because of the ratings. It'll probably be given to someone else on the show, maybe one of the new family since they haven't had a juicy storyline yet (plus one of the men in it, is the cutest person on the show = admittedly everyone else thinks I'm crazy but what's new?)
RAW ( Was good )

Dec. 7th, 2003 05:44 pmierdest dream ever Saturday night
( Drugs, motorcycle accidents and some strange cross between pigeons and chickens )
And then the phone woke me up luckily enough.
Such a wierd-ass dream. I mean most of the images I can explain because we'd been talking about them and I'd been thinking about hair gel/wax. That particular colour of blue had been used for lighting in a Changing Rooms room that night.
But the drugs thing? It's beyond me.
I dread to think what Freud would have made of it. Probably not to drink pink vodka.
New Travis song is a bit meh. But I'm still going seeing them on tour no matter what or who.
I may buy the Darkness's Christmas song not just because it is a fantastic record but because it will royally piss Zane Lowe off.
Just heard the Lost Prophets doing a metal version of La Timberlake's 'Cry Me A River'. Rather worryingly I prefer the original but this is still pretty damn cool. Anyway, they're supposed to be hitting the US sometime soon. Their sound's pretty difficult to describe but just download 'Burn, Burn' by them. It's their best track IMO, and pretty stonking. Failing that, 'Shinobi v the Dragon Ninja' or whatever it's called, which I don't like but other people do.
Aski Disco (German electro band) are also to be recommended to the hilt.
My inability to spell Avrogado and his blasted constant would be helped if the spellcheck didn't spell it Avocado's constant.
Got randomly attacked by the Shag week thing. Due to it being world's AIDS day the Union has this whole safe sex thing going on. So I got stopped. Now normally I'd be nice and chatty but my body had decided that pouring blood out of my vagina was more important and, to be frank, sex was the last thing on my mind.
But the condom, which makes a grand total of 2 in my possesion, will probably tide me over until I'm a corpse. My love-life - it's non-existant.
Hall Ball on Friday (meaning I miss Cade-ass). But all the boys in suits will be worth it.
Hall Ball - had a blast. An absolute blast. And I spoke to the bloke who now has a name. Admittedly I sounded insane but hey I can write that off due to drink. But yes, actually being able to speak to him is a huge step forward. For some unknown reason he renders me speechless. And I'm not a shy person, hello, I am the mingling queen.
However on a similar tip I have developed a nervous stammer. Not the entire truth, I've always had a nervous stammer, I just don't get that nervous often, or indeed ever since I hit 13. Gah, regression much.
Just heard a dance remix of something by Coldplay, and it works.
I think I may have got a hook on the evil essay of doom.
Essay of doom update - it stands at 1019 words. It has taken me 8 hours give or take to write 7kb on a word doc. Argh!
Westwood and Busta Rhymes, high as kites on the radio - what have we learnt -> never do radio high.
Was reading round on Law and Order: SVU and I have discovered that a character played by Ice-T ends up partnered up with Munch. Please let this be shown in the UK when I am at home and can therefore watch it. Ice-T!!!!!! Munch!!!!!
My love of Munch knows no bounds.
