February happened to it, repeatedly. (The last two weeks of February appear to have happened to several RL people, even worse than it happened to me. At least I just feel like I'm one week behind with everything.)

It looks like March and April will also happen to it, but I will try.

The most important news is that the hip soreness was/is probably just a strain or sprain (undoubtedly not helped by the stomach muscle strain that I picked up just beforehand) rather than anything more serious. You can imagine what I was imagining, but I suspect neither of the obvious forms of arthritis calm down within a month and ease off significantly after a good night's sleep following a skipped session. I am reasonably zen about it if it is the first stages of osteoarthritis because my hip doesn't fit together properly, never has, and therefore I've always known I am at greater risk.

I don't think that a total revamp of my squat technique helped, because different bits of the muscle around my hips are now doing the work. I think that's what caused the original twinge, but everything is calming down now, and I'm able to do hanging leg raises again, and there's been a post-lockdown squat PB.

Deadlift also coming back, probably helped by finally being able to use the Oly plates again. It's amazing how much easier lifting those are than the fixed weight bars.

Getting bench space remains difficult, but looking pitiful has encouraged some of the bigger blokes to remove unused but >50 kg weights from various bits of kit. I am also now on "oh hello" terms with some of the other regulars which is always a plus. (And means I now know what the thing that looks like a milkmaid's churn carrier is - https://barbend.com/safety-squat-bar-benefits/).
redfiona99: (Thinking)
Even though I can't do the stuff I wanted to do at work over the weekend (partly other people's fault, mostly mine), it's probably just as well that I'm not at Excalibur because I've caught a horrible cold and spending 2 days fencing sabre when you can't breathe is a good way of getting sent to A&E.

I've also managed to tweak one of my obliques while coughing last night. While it's not quite 'breathing hurts', coughing definitely does.
redfiona99: (Thinking)
And I had so been hoping to reach 30 with all my teeth.

Yes, that really is how low my aims are when it comes to my teeth.

After an unfortunate encounter with a toffee muffin some years ago, I had sworn off toffee. Despite loving it. So when my grandmother bought me toffee as a random gift, I thought, oh go on, why not.

I am an idiot.

Over ~ a month, I'd slowly got through the packet, and on Saturday I reached the last three or four when suddenly crunch. I took the toffee out of my mouth, couldn't see any part of my tooth on the toffee. But still sore. And it didn't get any better on Sunday or this morning. So my colleagues sent me to the dentist.

The dentist eventually found the problem, basically the filling in my C6 molar had split, breaking the tooth wall around it on one side. In the process of fixing this, the filling came apart, and basically my whole tooth crumbled in on itself. Not the dentist's fault, because it was one of the teeth I have that was holding on on a wing and a prayer.

It does leave me with a bit of a problem, since I suspect the two teeth around the absence aren't strong enough to hold a bridge, and I loathe having partial dentures (or rather the retainers that go with them), I think I'm going to wind up having an implant. To which I say, thank goodness for local anaesthetics.

What I've been doing - lots of RL stuff. I had a friend come down and then went out for a meal with work because one of the PhD students has just got a job and his girlfriend passed her viva on Friday. We went out to an allegedly Brazilian restaurant. Not sure how authentic it was but the food was not bad.

I have also, separately, done something unspeakable to the upper right side of my back, particularly whichever one lets me move my head. Pain, pain, pain.

European GP 2012 - (Valencia)

I think I just saw that most unexpected of things, an interesting Valencia GP. Nothing against the beautiful city, but like all road races, over-taking is normally at a minimum. I was especially doubtful given how they changed the DRS zones. But, due to some odd mechanical issues, this was fun. Not happy that it happened, but it definitely helped the race as a spectacle. Also, how happy was Schumacher with his third place. I've heard less happy winners.

That being said, what the heck is happening to McLaren's pitstops?

Euro 2012

At 80 minutes - Dear Italy, please remember your goalie is terrible at penalties. It might be important knowledge.

Also Ashley Young is a diving little so and so.

Italy, don't do this to me.

It's not that I have anything against this England team, it's just ...

Oh no ...

I didn't watch it. I feel terrible for England. This is the true evil of penalties.

Dear gods, this Linkin Park cover they're using at the end of the football is terrible.

~~~~
Watching the penalties later on the ITV highlights.
1 - I <3 Buffon and Hart.
2 - I am so glad Montelivio will not have to live with that on his conscience. Sorry, he's another one I've watched since he was a baby.
3 - Dear Pirlo, you are one confident (and supreme) son of gun.
4 - I am upset that Ashley Young is the one lumbered with missing a penalty to lose it.
5 - Holy mother of ... Did Gigi just save a penalty?! You have been practising, haven't you darling.
6 - Diamanti and Nocerino are little diamonds, aren't they.
7 - Always the final point, I wouldn't wish penalties on my worst enemy.
7b - Dear ITV ffs don't ask Carragher or Southgate about their misses.
7c - Oh Gareth Southgate, you're a marvel.
Semi-final diagram
Photobucket
It makes sense that Portugal and Spain are locked together, while Germany and Italy hang off the centre, given the number of Portuguese players that play in Spain, and how most of Germany and Italy's players play in the league of their home nation. Real Madrid still contribute the most players (10).
If you view the diagram as communities, they are Italy, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Real Madrid and Athletico Madrid. Why the last one I do not know.
The Good:
I haven't lost my GI Joe DVD.
My strained muscle in my back has healed to the point that I can survive without Deep Heat (mostly).
The Bad:
Proteins. That is all I wish to say on the matter as if I add anything to that, it will all be four letter words and asterisks.
Spiders - you can tell it's Spring, the spiders are making a comeback. I am not freaking out, really, but I am very happy that I will be moving soon. I must start to tidy/pack up however which is also :(
The Shakespeare Meme - Day #17: Your favorite speech
Sadly I can't find it from a production but I've got to go with the horribly obvious:
All the World's a Stage
I prefer it in situ, because, while I love it anyway, in the play you get the feeling of Jaques, who being as he is a forerunner to Marvin the Paranoid Android, will never be happy, and he's all anger and spite and bitterness* which most non-play readings leave out.
*Obviously, character interpretations, they vary.
The Good:
Avengers, on the IMAX. More on this soon.
I have found both my swipe card and my main USB stick. This is good for both work and personal (i.e. fic) reasons.
The Bad:
Oh god, the endless protein preps.
My short-term memory, see above for the attempted self-gaslighting
The Painful:
The muscle I have strained in my back finding the damned USB stick. It's one of the breathing and sitting upright ones. Painful doesn't even begin to cover it.
TNA Spoilers )
Bjork was awesome on Jools yesterday. Sadly I fear that RHCP have fallen into the dread pit of mid-life crisis, in particular Anthony Kiedis.
Jools's interview with Noel Gallagher hit new heights of terrible, even for a Jools interview.
My left wrist appears to have gone on strike. Most annoying!
Day 18 - A book that disappointed you
Somewhat related to my answer to favourite female character, I'd like to nominate The Northern Lights by Phillip Pullman. I think part of the problem was the hype, where it was sold to me as 'Narnia without the dodgy subtexts'. Housemate is a huge fan and lent me Northern Lights. Now I'm not sure if 23 is the wrong age to be reading it (which could be the problem), but I wasn't enchanted.
It's not that there weren't things I liked, like the belly laugh I got from Pope John Calvin (and also the blank looks me and D got when were talking about it, followed by D's comment of 'idiot Brits' (some paraphrasing involved). I miss D.) and the polar bears. I am pro-polar bears in fiction.
The problem was that the rest of it dragged. It had no go forward, to the point where I was skimming through it to get to the next part with the polar bears.
Which is a shame because the whole thing is right up my alley, cowboys with airships, mysterious witches, visible souls ... I should be lapping that up, but mostly I was bored.
Going back to ju-jitsu has been fun. And, if we ignore the usual bruises and one unusual bruise, remarkably pain-free. Yesterday, however, in a display of even more than my usual ineptitude, I pulled a muscle in my upper arm, probably my delt or my pec. Not actually hideously painful, just unspeakably awkward, and, because of the way I sleep, it lead to a lack of sleep and some really wierd dreams.
[Error: unknown template qotd]
I seem to recall swearing I'd never use Deep Heat again. I was maybe 12-13 and Sensei had thrown me too fast/I hadn't brake-falled properly, and I couldn't walk straight. Mum suggested a hot bath followed by spraying with Deep Heat. I agreed, and was ceremonially sprayed.
I couldn't sleep for the next 3 hours. I burnt everywhere.
Still, as time and ju-jitsu progressed, I realised that the occasional run-in with Deep Heat couldn't be avoided. And it's got me through many fencing competitions.
That said. I just foolishly had a long, very hot bath, and covered about half my skin in it. I am burning. Pain, pain, pain.
(It's actually starting to die down now, thankfully)
Yours truly has managed to knock out about a quarter of her left top front tooth. Thankfully, due to the luck I have, it's not hit a nerve. Eating is painful though. I am presently viewing this as an opportunity for slimming.
And for ranting about the lack of dental care in the UK. I should not have to go private to see a dentist within a week. Yes, I probably could have carried on calling round, but when both of the first two options thrown up as NHS dentists on the NHS website aren't taking on new NHS patients then there is a problem. While my socialist ethics are taking a battering, I refer you to the first statement in regards to eating. My total consumption in the 36 hours since injury is 1 ham and cheese sandwich, 1 tangerine, 2 nutrigrain bars, one glass fruit juice and one carton of milk. I need to eat!
It's also the final proof I am now a grown up. I text my Mother with news of my injury (obscuring the details slightly) and get no sympathy, no 'why don't you come home'. I get 'why don't you get a dentist in Leicester?'. Then again, my first thought on injury was not 'I want my Mummy', it was 'how much is this going to cost to fix'. I am a capitalist pig-dog.
Guess who has to have a filing on Monday. :(
Which, other than meaning I miss a day of work which I'm oddly unhappy about, also means I miss a dinner that Danny was organising. Which would be bad enough, since I like Danny and Laura, but Christina and Wolf are there too and again they're good people and I don't see them often. :(
I can't complain too much though, my second year talk went well, and I didn't get any truly evil questions.
Also, one of my fic notebooks has gone missing, and true to form, as it's gone missing, it contains two fics that I think would have been good had I ever managed to finished them. :( . I should be able to re-write it though.
First go at actually using the new dongle that Naomi bought me. Must remember to pay her back. It's kind of cool, I can see why people like wireless.
I've totally done my back in, probably just a slight muscle strain but it's amazing how much of my life depends on that one muscle. Oww!
Nedved was apparently approached by Spurs and A.N. Other London club (I'm guessing Arsenal or Chelski, but it could have been the Hammers as well) this summer. Quote there about:
"This summer I could have gone to London, Tottenham were not the only side interested in me," he said.
"But I didn't feel the need to move. My family and I are happy here. We will continue to live in Turin even after the end of my career."
I <3 him.
Onto RL:
I think I've hamstrung myself. It's not normal 'oops screwed up my knee/muscle' pain, it feels like my hamstring is tight, like something is weighing on it. It's not like it hurts a lot, it's just an annoying pain. Especially since I plan on going to the gym tonight - I have a four hour gap in work, so I have to find something to do with myself.
redfiona99: (Default)
My primers have arrived. Therefore step one of PhD work should be commencing tomorrow. Am excited and nervous.
Other than that life continues apace, I have a sore mouth due a wisdom tooth trying to escape from through my cheek and a sore back thanks to fencing kit being stupidly heavy and awkward to carry (and my poor posture).
redfiona99: (Default)
I <3 cuprofen.
Watched Tristan and Isolde last night. Not too bad, if you ignore pufferfish and that I was watching it with Cornwall based archeologists who also had similar problems.
But (spoilers) )
Although I shan't complain too much, since this was a film that had Rufus Sewell and James Franco in. Half-naked. Whee!
redfiona99: (Default)
The Good: I have wonderful, joyous painkillers.
The Bad: I only have these because I have tendonitis in my right, preferred hand.
The Ugly: Probably the fencing competition this Saturday.
The Good: May soon have a TV licence
The Bad: Still no internet connection at home
The Ugly: Probably me if I don't get one soon, esp. since I want to watch some wrestling.
The Good: Nothing's gone wrong with my PhD yet.
The Bad: This is because I haven't gone into the lab yet.
The Ugly: My nerves about going back into the lab.
Relearning something I learnt in first year - going out clubbing when you have uni the next day is not good.
I am of the walking zombies.
Missed the first 10 minutes of my 9.30, not that I wouldn't have been asleep anyway.
But yes, gah! Want to know how tired I am, I'm looking forward to tonight because it's a "work" night so I can lurk in my room and do studying.
Edit: Back doesn't hurt as much, slept with the bean bunny on it last night and that seems to have worked. Hamstrings are probably going to need the same treatment once my back is sorted.
redfiona99: (art)
Remnants ficathon fic going well-ish - will hopefully reach the word limit by the end of next week. Having problem with the showing, not telling thing as usual but it's not as obvious a problem as it usually is.
Manchester uni application is fucked since one of my referees is on holiday this week. Blast!
Went fencing. How's this for amusing - was walking to pub with that guy's girlfriend and she was saying how if me and him both went to Birmingham we could live together. I just pointed out I'd drive him mad because I'm messy.
I am also amused that neither him nor her view me as competition. It's either a compliment or an insult and I can't decide which.
My back hurts because of it. Nothing major but it's annoying.
Oh and meme
Ten Ways You Can Tell You're Reading A Red Fiona Fic
1 - The characters are quite often not the usual suspects.
2 - There may well be a gen-ish edge to it. I am a gen writer by nature, I just got corrupted by wrestling slash.
3 - The commas, dear God, the commas. I hearby admit to an over-use of commas. The thing is, they are normally in the right place, it just means my sentances get very, very long. I blame the influence of the German language.
4 - The tangents - I go off on tangents. While they're often not vital to the story I think they help the general atmosphere. For this I blame my love of Alexandre Dumas's works. Seriously, The Three Musketeers is tangent central and The Count of Monte Cristo is even better/worse.
5 - There are people who float in and out of the story because that reflects my life, because although there are people who I see every day there's far more who I might see once a week.
6 - The same with the alcohol that marinades my fic.
7 - There will be lots of talking.
8 - But not a lot of plot. Unless it's an AU. Then the fics tend to be overflowing with plots.
9 - The plots that there are are often based of what has happened on screen/page.
10 - Descriptions are not my forte. Not least of all because I swear the way I sense things is way out of line with the way the rest of the world does.
Wrist screwed up beyond belief. If you imaging holding your palm out flat as being 0 degrees, I can't turn my forearm to 90 degrees without it hurting like a bitch, you'd be amazed how many things involve that kind of movement.
Went and bought CDs to make myself feel better. Am now the proud owner of 'Up All Night' by Razorlight, an Animals Best Of, a Dusty Springfield best of and a random Gary Numan CD.
I've taken to listening to my CDs when I get bored. Lifeblood by the Manics is a lot better the more you listen to it. 1985 is still the best song on the album, but the others are starting to sink into my brain.
Saw a J-C Van Damme film called 'Replicant' which is a seriously, seriously messed up film. On top of some seriously bizarre non-sexual bondage and some serious pet play, it had the most random sex scene ever. It was like the writer just thought - oh we need a sex scene. So how do we get a holy fool type character laid? Simple, we have a prostitute randomly grab him.
spoiler
As for the two of them practically skipping away at the end, I have no words.
End spoiler
Actually it was quite a good film in a wierd way, a properly psycho character who got to kick women and small children and the disabled. And with a fun excuse to explain Van Damme's accent.
Yay for small international co-productions made in Toronto. Which may or may not have been pretending to be San Francisco.
Give me pain any day. Everytiem I move my arm round, or try to grip something it feels like there's something going pop under the skin. It's more freaky and annoying than anything. Opinion has it that I've pulled something. Might have something to do with the huge amount of stuff I have to carry 'cause lazy friend refuses to cart books in with her.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to combat the injury, or how to write orgies, I'm willing to listen.
