While I was writing the music list posts, I realised that I had forgotten some tracks so I have collated the forgotten tracks and albums. I sense this will be added to on and off, especially the later years.

The original reason for the posts (far back in the mists of time in 2009) was that I really loathed the Rolling Stone list of top 50 albums of that time span. I felt it was so determinedly, dementedly lo-fi indie (and bad lo-fi indie at that, it's like Fugazi without the fun and the tunes) hipster nonsense that even I could do better. It wasn't like I actually listened to that much music in that decade but I was at least willing to accept there were things out there that weren't 4 boys with guitars.

I accepted that Rolling Stone were going to skew slightly to the US because that's where they're based, and mine had the opposite slant because I'm based in the UK.

So, who would I have on my list:

There's a reasonably good shout for 2000-2009's stand-out, the world stops for them, artist to have been Beyonce.

In terms of impact, to other people's sound/image, Lady Gaga has to be on there. To quote someone (sorry, I can't find who, google has failed me), "do you think Rihanna would be out there dressed like that singing about S&M without Gaga having been a huge hit?"

In the UK, Amy Winehouse changed what record companies were signing (see also Duffy, Adele, Mark Ronson) and the direction artists were going (see Plan B).

More generally, the sound of pop and pop RnB went from Dr Dre to Timberland to David Guetta.

In the UK, there was the brief but beautiful flowering of Britpop Version 2.0, so I would have had a Libertines album and one out of the Kaiser Chiefs or Franz Ferdinand. Meanwhile, Muse went from opening the bill for Feeder to arena-selling-out-colossuses (I don't even like Muse, but not having them on was when I realised the Rolling Stone list was pish). They also totally missed the rise of emo. Which is not my cup of tea at all but was still a major movement in music. It was almost as though anything less obscure than hipster indie, or louder than shoegazing was disregarded. Although at least they did have American Idiot on their list which was definitely on my top 10 list. I'm still looking forward to the 2010s-equivalent.

In the UK there was also the rise of UK hip-hop, garage and grime, or whatever you call it (this is the perfect time to drop a Wiley track - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1YKFV45M18) so The Streets, Wiley and Dizzee Rascal.

Certainly in the UK, you couldn't avoid "reality" stars and contestants, downloads started to be counted as single sales and both of the above had a huge effect on popular music. Word of mouth still mattered but it's hard to compete against the major labels and TV shows. Also, with the honourable exception of Later with Jools, there's almost no live music on TV any more which has a huge effect.

Sorry for the gap between the 2008 edition and this. I also have a horrible feeling I've missed something very important off of this list.

Special - Killing In The Name - Rage Against the Machine - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8de2W3rtZsA Originally released in 1992, rereleased to stop an X-Factor number one, which always struck me as unfair to poor Joe McElderry, who was inoffensive, but happened to be that year's Cowell-candidate. Live version because, well they kick it live. Including when they're not allowed instruments - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JE14kl7Vkrg (Rage at the Republican Convention)

Not related at all, but there's a fantastic quote from Niki Lauda when asked about 'Rush', a film which is based on his and James Hunt's rivalry (I expect it to be bad. I expect it to be wrong.) - >>"The challenge now is to find an actor who is happy to start filming with two ears, but end it with just one," laughed Lauda, who is never afraid to joke about the horrific outcome of his 1976 Nurburgring accident.<<

Oh Niki, if they paint you as the villain of the piece I shall be most displeased (um, let's see icy German-speaker [Lauda is Austrian, damn it, but we all know that they'll do something bad with it] vs fun-loving English-speaking boy racer, dear Hollyweird, I know what you're going to do.).

2006 features lots of albums I like a lot, but none that I've bought. In particular it contains two that I'd have on my personal top 50 of the 00s, the two being 'Alright, Still' by Lily Allen and 'Back to Black' by Amy Whitehouse. It also features 'Black Holes and Revelations' by Muse, which, while I still don't get them, I considered to be the most ridiculous omission of the Onion Top 50.

Albums: )

Singles: )

Dance Tracks )

Special Cases:

Songs - Love Don't Let Me Go - David Guetta - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6e3R-aA2LA Original version released in 2002, the mix that became popular was 2006.

Remember The Name - Fort Minor - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F11JqLUBCfY Released 2005, only reached the UK in 2006. I am going to cheat because this was something I found via football, and it was used for a Del Piero fan-vid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpRqFMsJf14) and I love this song for all the wrong reasons because of this.

Dance Tracks:

Voodoo Child - Rogue Traders - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AH_k7CP2EVo Cracking track (actually released in 2005) and yes, that is thingy from Neighbours, and yes, the Whovians may have heard it somewhere ;)

~~~~
I have valiantly not included people like Larrikin Love (and other indie darlings) in here, because if I'm doing a best of I'd rather it be inclusive, not just those bands that only 3 people heard and they're OMG so much better because they're tiny etc. That's what really got me about the Onion list, the number of indie darlings, which fair, enough some of them were good, but where were the folk bands, the (oh dear god I hate this term but just work with me for the time being) various "world music" albums. Where was the jazz? It was all college rock, which is appealing to no-one except hipster indie types.
He's got a throat infection and can't perform, so we get this instead. And much though I love Paul Weller, definitely happy with the replacement :) (And squee, that was the first time I heard the Futureheads live, I think).
The main thing I remember about 2004 was the rise of Britpop v2 - the regions fight back, which was based on late 70s new wave, as opposed to the late 60s melodicism of the first wave. I look forward to Britpop v3 in a couple of years ;)
I've gone with Cry Me A River as the exemplar track because it's so good, and yet, it's by the Timberlake.
Music 2002:
Less going on this year than most, the death of nu-metal, the beginnings of the rise of emo [brief pause to editorialise - yuck!], the revenge of the boy band and some strong albums from establish bands. I am making up for the lack of albums by writing an excessive amount. Sorry about that :)
First, Gareth Thomas came out. The article, on the BBC website, must have been taken from a pretty long interview (for the Daily Fail, hence no link to that), and it's totally worth a read - http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/rugby_union/welsh/8421956.stm
And don't worry Alfie, I'm sure people are far more likely to remember those awesome tries you scored than anything else.
The Times have put up it's top 5 sporting moment of the decade: I disagree with number 5, but I like the rest:
4. 2005 Andrew Flintoff offers hand of friendship to Brett Lee )
3. 2005 Liverpool triumph thanks to the 'Miracle of Istanbul' )
2. 2003 Jonny Wilkinson secures World Cup with that kick )
1. 2008 Usain Bolt sets world record on his way to gold )
I cut the blurb but you should read it, because it's a perfect piece of Simon Barnes writing. Because he's not wrong. By the time Bolt ran, we had twitter, we had facebook, everything was instant, and in that instant, the only thing anyone wrote was, 'wow'.
Title of the first post each month:
January - My conscience is giving me trouble, new years and a fic
February - Scoreboard Update
March - What I've been doing
April - We meet again, Mr. Split Infinitive
May - Champions League
June - An Update
July - Musical PSA
August - Caribbean Carnival
September - Back From Germany
October - Fencing
November - Coventry Open
December - It's all the little things
It's mostly real life stuff and sport.
Sporting Moments
19. 2005: London awarded the 2012 Olympic Games, Singapore )
17. 2008: Usain Bolt wins the Olympic 200 metres, Beijing )
15. 2005: Gary Pratt runs out Ricky Ponting, Trent Bridge )
8. 2000: Cathy Freeman’s Olympic 400 metres, Sydney )
7. 2000 Steve Redgrave’s fifth Olympic gold, Sydney )
6. 2001 David Beckham’s late free kick, Old Trafford )
I'd also like to recommend another article from the Times, from Simon Barnes who is a great sports writer, and one of the best journalists working today in any field, summing up why he's not fed up with sport.
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/columnists/simon_barnes/article6960801.ece
Final paragraph:
Sport is not only about good things, why should it be? Sport is rich, sport contains all manner of moods and emotions. But here are nine wonderful athletes and a half-decent manager, all of whom have filled my year with good things. Fed up with sport? Actually no. A person who is tired of sport is tired of life.
There, my friends, is a man who gets it.
redfiona99: (Default)
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/article6957773.ece
Today's are more heart-warming.
59. 2001: Liverpool 5 Alavés 4, Uefa Cup final, Dortmund )
57. 2009: Harlequins and rugby union’s “Bloodgate” scandal, London No cut for this, or blurb, just remember it next time Union fans try to claim the moral high-ground over, well, anything.
54. 2008: Rebecca Adlington in the pool, Beijing )
52. 2007 Joe Calzaghe outclasses Mikkel Kessler, Cardiff )
51. 2002: Rhona Martin’s curlers win Olympic gold, Salt Lake City )
41. 2009: Andrew Flintoff runs out Ricky Ponting, Kennington )
On non-list, but still sporting related matters - why the heck have Milton Keynes been made part of the 2018 bid when Leicester haven't? It can't be our stadium, it was one of the ones they used while Wembley was out of action. It can't be sporting history because Milton Keynes has none. I am assuming bribery.
Two exceptional cases:
Teenage Dirtbag - Wheatus - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jJWQkVgDs4
Released in 2000, but only made it really big over here in early 2001 (this is the problem with using Wiki as my main resource). My boy cousin has the album, and the plot of the video (minus the threat of violence) did pretty much occur to a friend - during the great Maiden revival, he managed to get a spectacularly attractive girl to go with him to a Maiden gig.
White Ladder - David Gray - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jT8Q7Y5nq-E
Released in 1999, but huge from summer 2000 onwards.
redfiona99: (Thinking)
After I read [livejournal.com profile] evilgmbethy's post where she commented on one magazines best of the 00s album list, and we all agreed that it, and most of the others, were full of unlistenable hipster indie rubbish, I started thinking about what I'd call the best albums of the last decade. And then I realised that this was almost impossible, given the amount of music I've missed during this decade, so I thought, I'll do a year by year round up of albums that have had an impact on my life either by the goodness of the music, or its terribleness or just me and my friends and my memories, or on music, in terms of trends and whatnot. So here's the list. It's not a best of, or a favourites, it's just a collection, an attempt to catch the flavour of the year. Also, sorry if it's a bit Brit skewed.
From nhw - These are the top 106 books most often marked as "unread" by LibraryThing's users (as of today). As usual, bold what you have read, italicise what you started but couldn't finish, and strike through what you couldn't stand. The numbers after each one are the number of LT users who used the tag of that book (that is, last time that the algorithm was done - when I checked, I found most of them had a few more added to the total). I've also added that any that are underlined are unfinished through no fault of their own.
In which it becomes obvious that I have the attention span of a gnat, and a gnat on speed at that )
