Music 2002:
Less going on this year than most, the death of nu-metal, the beginnings of the rise of emo [brief pause to editorialise - yuck!], the revenge of the boy band and some strong albums from establish bands. I am making up for the lack of albums by writing an excessive amount. Sorry about that :)
Fever - Kylie Minogue - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmCm5beHDpI Classy dance-pop, and completing her comeback.
Drunken Lullabies - Flogging Molly - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gdlkx_cIqtE Rebels of the Sacred Heart - mostly for my uni friends who loved them and wore gig t-shirts.
The Remote Part - Idlewild - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMlZIlCcjm4 Another one of my choices for album of the decade. But that's because I love their melody and Roddy's phrasing when singing and his lyrics.
Destination - Ronan Keating - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4kzGhDEURA See other inescapable things, because the song I've chosen and Keating himself and his clone-minions, Westlife, could not be avoided, and oh how I tried.
Original Pirate Material - The Streets - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veAIHDGghP4 I chose Don't Mug Yourself, because it best describes his very English rap/grime thing. Very early Streets, out with the lads. This is the one that has made a lot of the critics's list because they seem to hate 'A Grand Don't Come For Free' but either of them is a good choice.
The Eminem Show - Eminem - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVkUvmDQ3HY
Untouchables - Korn - http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=sonymusicSME#p/search/14/WWmgpnHjgdw
Now I say the death of nu-metal, and you're going to say but Untouchables reached number 2 in the charts and sold a ridiculous amount. However, Untouchables was probably the last major nu-metal album that got anywhere. The first albums by a lot of the big emo groups got released this year, and while I've not included those because they made a dint of less than zero on my life at the time, it was definitely a changing of the guard.
By The Way - Red Hot Chilli Peppers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiznwdibwZY
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots - The Flaming Lips - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zYOKFjpm9s I'm not going to lie, I love the Flaming Lips, because they're like a sonic smile, in a sort of morbid and creepifying way.
The Coral - The Coral - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRy8N1P1EUI First time I saw them was on an MTV Live Tour concert late night on MTV2. I plugged them to the point my friends went to see them instead of whoever was headlining Glasto that year. My friends said I did them a favour. So very good.
Melody A.M. - Royksopp - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBvaHZIrt0o Clever electro dance, with melancholy melody.
Songs For the Deaf - Queens of the Stone Age - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcHKOC64KnE I have an awkward relationship with Queens of the Stone Age, some of their tracks are awesome, such as Go With The Flow, which is the one I used for the example, but others are screamingly dull and or over-rated. I swear this is one of those 'I have more problems with their fans than with the band' situatons.
The Music - The Music - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGkSl-rATfo Did they ever live up to this first album, no, but was it damn good, yes.
Dutty Rock - Sean Paul - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6wMADTM3NU I may have gone on about how much I like raggae, and I adore Sean Paul for his cheekiness. Loved dancing to this.
Busted - Busted - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMo5uTh-zZ0 Year 3000, which is the only Busted song I like. Apparently there's a Jonas Brothers cover which is no where near as good. The women no longer have 3 breasts, for a start. I shall chuckle at US tween bands. The first of the mutant boy bands, who could play their instruments but were still sold on their looks, even though it made me weep for the generation of women one younger than me.
Up The Bracket - The Libertines- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8lTyYlQ-Wg Love them or loath them, they were the first of the second wave of Brit pop bands.
One By One - Foo Fighters- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhPts2p938g I have the same problem with the Foos as I do with Queens of the Stone Age, except I like more of their songs. This one in particular, it got me out of a pretty hideous funk back in 2002.
Stripped - Christina Aguilera - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FvJDibu9e0
Audioslave - Audioslave - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uhatY70Acs Ah, dear old Rage Against the Soundgarden. Everyone was so very excited for this.
This Is Me ... Then - Jennifer Lopez- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRFmAYh3aRc
Albums by Bands I Loathe and Yet Are Inexplicably Popular:
Highly Evolved - The Hives - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6GwFRpmzx4# A good bet for most overhyped band ever, for some reason the music journos liked them, and while they do make a pretty amusing noise, it is only one dimensional.
Let's Go - Avril Lavigne - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGXYAJoDWCk Loathe, and so self-hatingly anti-girls-that-are-not-me.
A Rush of Blood to the Head - Coldplay - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KkWGy7W3_o The trouble is I know they're good (I even really like Clocks) but they just leave me cold.
The Young and the Hopeless - Good Charlotte - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ctkmkfx9xqU Loathing, nothing but loathing.
The Remote Part - Idlewild - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_ukeAM2lsw
Original Pirate Material - The Streets - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UGtlUMMkOU
American IV: The Man Comes Around - Johnny Cash - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSzfWLlvlAE
Sick - Sneaker Pimps - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9n0qsS1vQGg An absolute earworm.
Soak Up The Sun - Sheryl Crow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35U4lUt6A-8
A Thousand Miles - Vanessa Carlton - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cwkej79U3ek
Open Your Eyes - Goldfinger - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xzwi_A0v6ow I love this song.
My Last Serenade - Killswitch Engage - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJLRomwvJr4
Days Go By - Dirty Vegas - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAt7sawS8_4
Skater Boy - Avril Lavigne - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcJ35czZekQ I take it I don't need to say how much I hate this.
City of Angels - The Distillers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yt-3Jmo-Mc4 This, meanwhile, I couldn't love more. Like Coral Fang, when I get to it, this sounds so angry and me. I'd like to that Casey Chaos from Amen for introducing them to me on his Kerrang Mix-tape.
Stop Crying Your Heart Out - Oasis - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BjQ3LrmkTY They might not be able to write stonking tunes as consistently as they used to be able to, but when Oasis get it right, they're still wonderful. This is one of those songs that's called cheating when used by TV and films.
Hot In Here - Nelly - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-qN6TCY85c
Girl All The Bad Guys Want - Bowling For Soup - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCvv0NzyaSE
Bother - Stone Sour - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbKrt-bs0m4 Quite how Corey Taylor did both Slipknot and this is beyond me. I love this track, particularly this live version. Beautiful enough that my Mum admits its goodness.
Get Busy - Sean Paul - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u44aULhiA2M
Swing, Swing - All American Rejects - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzLBnoAf67g I love the organ at the start of this.
Kiss Kiss - Holly Valance - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAkUtig5iG4 This sounded really fresh and different, and sold well because of that and the Dad factor of the video (and the grand 'is she naked' debate). The reason it sounds quite so different is that it's a cover/reworking of a Turkish song. The original is here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRsyyBFcHYQ
Diamonds and Guns - the Transplants - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3SzI92FDFo Not only is this catchy as, but it features in two of my selling out stories. 1) The 'punk rock' show on Radio 1 had a presenter who was going on and on about how Green Day and Blink had sold out, so one of his long suffering listeners asked why he didn't list Rancid in that group given that this was being used in a shampoo commercial. 2) Tim Armstrong, when asked about the shampoo commercial, said that he might have been lucky enough to have made money out of music but Rob Ashton (?) the singer/rapper for the Transplants, and roadie for Rancid, hadn't and he wasnt' going to deny Rob's kids an education just for his own principles. I <3 Tim Armstrong.
Lose Yourself - Eminem - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFYQQPAOz7Y When I started the list, I made rule - no compilations and no soundtracks. 8 Mile was the one that kicked me in the tush. This, however, was released as a single seperately and is my favourite Eminem song.
Hurt - Johnny Cash - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o22eIJDtKho
Addictive - Truth Hurts - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTjPmgN98H8 Known as the song that no one could ever remember the name of, even though they could remember every other thing about it.
The Ketchup Song - Las Ketchup- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2dLR5ZCtU4 The year's novelty hit. So catchy even Spiderman danced to it; how I wish I had a link to that.
Hero - Chad Kroeger - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1x1CZwKrSXI Another reason I had to include random soundtrack tracks.
My Neck, My Back - Khia - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMCMlNyySvo I remember my housemate being freaked when her ~7 year old cousin started singing this, obviously not knowing what it meant.
Santa Cruz - the Thrills - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekP3x_RNTkQ I know, given that I like this lot of wishy-washy, I can't really complain about the rest of the wishy-washy bands, but these at least sound slightly different in a very US-influenced happy way.
Dilemma - Nelly and Kelly - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEs_FNWWk1w
Stole - Kelly Rowlands - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZPec6J33K8 Why yes, I am very fond of Kelly Rowlands, how did you guess ;)
Freak Like Me - Sugababes - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGSajAGg9h4 So the Sugababes, one hit wonders, new members and everything. They're about to release a new song, no one thinks that it's going to be up to much. Oh boy, were we ever wrong.
Attack of Reality TV: Reality TV and music from the products thereof really took off and over this year. Here are a few songs.
Unchained Melody - Gareth Gates - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21KGTI6AG_Q I loathe this version, he totally chickens out of *that* note.
Just A Little - Liberty X - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOMFS0fGwuQ Runners up from the original Pop Idol.
Light My Fire - Will Young - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BYEZmw6rcM At least he's using an interesting version of this to cover.
Sound of the Underground - Girls Aloud - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnLrNHCQPP0 The second best song from a reality artist, the best being No Good Advice by Girls Aloud. However, there's a reason why they're the only ones that ever made it as a 'real' group.
Dance Tracks:
A Little Less Conversation - JXL w/ Elvis - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSkDQYe2FYw Glorious remix Used for the Secret Tournament advert, generally regarded as one of the greatest adverts ever - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkCyWOR5LTU
The Logical Song - Scooter - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vd2zhRrG0u4
Something - Lasgo- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQVtM7PqOSY
Addicted to Bass - Puretones - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmwGGLrDvfE
