2006 features lots of albums I like a lot, but none that I've bought. In particular it contains two that I'd have on my personal top 50 of the 00s, the two being 'Alright, Still' by Lily Allen and 'Back to Black' by Amy Whitehouse. It also features 'Black Holes and Revelations' by Muse, which, while I still don't get them, I considered to be the most ridiculous omission of the Onion Top 50.

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not - Artic Monkeys http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6c0LwdCf9X0&feature=fvst Artic Monkeys are another one of those bands that I just don't get.

Keys To The World - Richard Ashcroft - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbfgKANU2J0&feature=av2e Now, Richard Ashcroft, on the other hand, him I get.

Inside In/Inside Out - The Kooks - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-KnNVoFsCc&feature=av2n I swear they only have one song, but it is pleasing to the ear.

Corinne Bailey Rae - Corinne Bailey Rae - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wc0qMerzz0&feature=av2e

Ringleader of the Tormentors - Morissey - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3gridIpTa8 I love this track so, so much.

The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living - The Streets - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xm3fPCJ4DQY

Tired of Hanging Around - The Zutons - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmrDnM2gehU&feature=av2n

St. Elsewhere - Gnarls Barkley - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZbeiXZVWbM&feature=av2e

Eyes Open - Snow Patrol - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfa9yxCpWoA&feature=av2e Snow Patrol aren't my sort of thing, but I love how they build to a climax with the music.

Stadium Arcadium - Red Hot Chili Peppers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sb5aq5HcS1A I love the video to Dani California. It's that wonderful kind of silly.

The Warning - Hot Chip - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3XWTKJGGzc

Loose - Nelly Furtado - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0J3vgcE5i2o&feature=av2e An interesting re-invention. I love both versions of Nelly. And also, this video is my evidence of why Timberland is x10000 more attractive than the Timberbimbo.

Black Holes And Revelations - Muse - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xsp3_a-PMTw&feature=av2e See also, bands whose appeal I just don't get.

Alright, Still - Lily Allen - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WxDrVUrSvI&feature=av2e I totally and unashamedly love Lily Allen.

Razorlight - Razorlight - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGp11BIGhfA&feature=av2n

Back To Basics - Christina Aguilera - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nu-7rPdFjvI&feature=av2e My Grandmother adores this track, and actually quite likes Christina Aguilera, because 'she can actually sing, not just make noise'.

Future Sex/Love Sounds - Justin Timberlake - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuHMp8L7aGo Much though I don't like the Timberbimbo, I'll grant this is a cracking track.

Sam's Town - The Killers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG5X4kOjEX8&feature=av2n

The Black Parade - My Chemical Romance - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6EQAOmJrbw&feature=av2e Okay, so I'm frequently mean about them, but this is a cracking track. And so very true.

Back To Black - Amy Winehouse - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojdbDYahiCQ&feature=av2n This is one of the albums I'm going to be complaining was missing off the original 50 best of, because, at least in terms of the UK music scene, Amy Winehouse changed what was being released. The number of 'in the style of's that suddenly got released was amazing.

Beautiful World - Take That - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwC1Ctrj6Xk&feature=av2e I spent large chunks of my primary school career hating this lot, and they go and release an album of decent songs (fury emoticon goes here)

I'm Not Dead - Pink - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XA9w4voK9YY

Twelve Stops And Home - The Feeling - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MS5da0OPhY8 Offensively inoffensive middle of the road indie pop.

The Dutchess - Fergie - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5T0utQ-XWGY The most ridiculous lyrics ever or what?

Music Is Power - Richard Ashcroft - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBNPlgQHFI0&feature=av2n

She Moves In Her Own Way - The Kooks - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6-QM0_Prp0&feature=av2n Like I said, they only have the one song :)

Put Your Records On - Corinne Bailey Rae - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkBXJ7sprIs&feature=fvst

The Youngest Was The Most Loved - Morissey - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNhnCex00YE

Skip To The End - Futureheads - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sDXv5FcInQ And yet, despite this level of awesome, they got dropped by their record label. Record labels are frequently stupid.

Never Went To Church - The Streets - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qu3y_BrewFs This is weepfest central. Oh the music and the rhymes. Live version because just ... yes!

Valerie - The Zutons - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iz7OfuTbCO4&feature=av2n

Crazy - Gnarls Barkley - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bd2B6SjMh_w

SOS - Rhianna - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXmF4GbA86E&feature=av2e The number of tracks that snaffle 'Tainted Love' continues to be amusing.

Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GemKqzILV4w&feature=av2e

Snow (Hey Oh) - Red Hot Chili Peppers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuFI5KSPAt4&feature=av2e

No Tomorrow - Orson - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqN7gntG8qw I can't find the proper video for this, sorry.

Steady As She Goes - The Raconteours -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZYQr3Ivg6w The video is genius. Still prefer Corinne Bailey Rae's version.

Over and Over - Hot Chip - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mdgLn5BFRQ&feature=av2e

Miss Murder - AFI - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMxU2ToSunY&feature=av2e I missed an awful lot of music in 2006, this was one such song. Thanks to Guitar Hero, I still managed to catch it though ;)

Man Eater - Nelly Furtado - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLolag3YSYU

Rooftops - Lost Prophets - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NI1dDIpB6k0

Knights of Cydonia - Muse - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_sBOsh-vyI One of the three Muse songs that I actually like.

LDN - Lily Allen - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmYT79tPvLg&feature=av2e

America - Razorlight - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9NhncU5_CE&feature=av2e

Ain't No Other Man - Christina Aguilera - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JgeuPZaERA&feature=av2e

Empire - Kasabian - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCIVF3GSu-4&feature=av2e While I continue to prefer the stuff off their first album, this is still a cracker of a track.

Chelsea Dagger - The Fratellis - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEXHeTcxQy4 Which has replaced Come On Eireen and New York, New York as one of the last songs at any disco night. Random factoid, Chelsea Dagger was the lead Fratelli's wife's stage name when she was a stripper.

Sexy Back - Justin Timberlake - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZs_4sYu-Ck

I Don't Feel Like Dancin' - Scissor Sisters - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4H5I6y1Qvz0

Kick, Push - Lupe Fiasco - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrF4BJ1cwPE Again, just couldn't find the real video.

When You Were Young - The Killers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ff0oWESdmH0

Snakes on A Plane - Cobra Starship - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XV24FN4rDzE&feature=av2e

Welcome To The Black Parade - My Chemical Romance - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDWgsQhbaqU

P.D.A (We Just Don't Care) - John Legend - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNddM12irDI

Rehab - Amy Winehouse - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LTPRJqt2z4 This song is so damn good. Music, lyrics (mildly unfortunate given what happened next, I grant) and her voice.

When The Sun Goes Down - Arctic Monkeys - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2W_hEdt1Xes

Patience - Take That - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=273eSvOwpKk&feature=av2e

Bang, Bang You're Dead - Dirty Pretty Things - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2Fb4cEVyLU I love this slightly too much.

Fill My Little World - The Feeling - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ztIpA2gQMo&feature=av2e

It's Chico Time - Chico - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqw3rCS2MaA&feature=av2e

I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker - Sandi Thom - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efxDCg3_Ys4

Hips Don't Lie - Shakira - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMdROUkmXSk

I See You You See Me - The Magic Numbers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxyPT8QaBAk&feature=av2n

Is It Any Wonder - Keane - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVe_KVzBFOo&feature=av2e Two examples of the bland indie that seemed to take over the UK charts in the mid-00s. Bleck! Although this is my favourite Keane song, but it's noticably more up-tempo than most of theirs.

One - Mary J. Blige - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpDQJnI4OhU Yes, I know, but I like this version. I love Mary J. Blige's voice.

Something Kinda Oooh - Girls Aloud - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wy3SV2fvoG8 This was the Loughborough women's fencing team's theme song, so I heard it far too much, frequently when I was on the wrong side of the result. Loughborough were lovely girls though :)

U and Ur Hand Tonight - Pink - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUaVprkR6jQ

The Saints Are Coming - U2/Green Day - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PD_0fqvT32g

The Sweet Escape - Gwen Stefani - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0lf_fE3HwA

Ridin' Dirty - Chamillionaire - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtwJvgPJ9xw So damn catchy. And I like the video too.

London Bridge - Fergie - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_FGXii8v3U My Mum loves the video for this, she thinks it's hilarious.

Dirty Little Secret - All American Rejects - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPDcwjJ8pLg

Monster - The Automatic - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4v8qae11_-M

Everytime We Touch - Cascada http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjZ2zwXbta4 The first of the library videos, seriously, there was a rash of dance music videos with libraries. I love this track.

Thunder In My Heart Again - Leo Sayer - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGVuqOzG-TM

Put Your Hands Up For Detroit - Fedde Le Grand - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KspT3TGOKQQ Unfortunately not only am I not a big fan, but it reminds me of someone I really don't like. Interesting video though.

From Paris To Berlin - Infernal - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THt5u-i2d9k Major earworm. I love this track.

I'll Be Ready - Sunblock - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlmcs1xsIy8&feature=fvst Housemate N used to love requesting this when we went out clubbing.

Say, Say, Say - Hi Tack - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RVjSNyKzwc&feature=av2e This is also an exception to the don't read the comments section, where there are people complaining about the lack of coherent narrative in the video.

Somebody's Watching Me - Beatfreakz - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lh8_4qqX5bo

Possibly the start of the Michael Jackson revival, mostly because the mid-200s are when people like me, for whom, growing up, there were pop stars and then there was Michael Jackson, started to have financial muscle.

Stoned In Love - Chicane - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-hj6xP6zu8 Which I always mis-hear as Stoney Love. It must be said that I prefer the live version - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieaazc8oleA

You've Got The Love - The Source - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COAUBmQ0cDI The original 1990s mix of this is my favourite version of this, but I don't mind the 2006 mix. Of the Florence and the Machine versions, I prefer the Dizzee + Florence version.

Rock This Party (Everybody Dance Now) - Bob Sinclar - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqSxh69HmC8 Cool track with the most ridiculously adorable video.

Boogie 2Nite - Booty Luv - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIvROkL8wJM

Special Cases:

Songs - Love Don't Let Me Go - David Guetta - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6e3R-aA2LA Original version released in 2002, the mix that became popular was 2006.

Remember The Name - Fort Minor - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F11JqLUBCfY Released 2005, only reached the UK in 2006. I am going to cheat because this was something I found via football, and it was used for a Del Piero fan-vid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpRqFMsJf14) and I love this song for all the wrong reasons because of this.

Dance Tracks:

Voodoo Child - Rogue Traders - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AH_k7CP2EVo Cracking track (actually released in 2005) and yes, that is thingy from Neighbours, and yes, the Whovians may have heard it somewhere ;)

~~~~
I have valiantly not included people like Larrikin Love (and other indie darlings) in here, because if I'm doing a best of I'd rather it be inclusive, not just those bands that only 3 people heard and they're OMG so much better because they're tiny etc. That's what really got me about the Onion list, the number of indie darlings, which fair, enough some of them were good, but where were the folk bands, the (oh dear god I hate this term but just work with me for the time being) various "world music" albums. Where was the jazz? It was all college rock, which is appealing to no-one except hipster indie types.
