Music 2001
Dec. 14th, 2009 12:14 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
So after a year when not much happened, a year where everything happened. Slightly less English-based, given there's people singing in Russian, Spanish, German and French.
Here come the girls: Heading, because really, of the albums I picked out, huge numbers of them were female acts.
J. Lo - Jennifer Lopez - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=190cupYNxN4
I can't vouch for anywhere else but this album and particularly this song, where huge at our school.
Scorpion - Eve - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSxjFPuoTC8
Survivor - Destiny's Child - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHbPQklMMBs
Absolutely inescapable, particularly bootylicious, which I hold responsible for the introduction of that to common parlance and for the trend for adding -licious to the end of everything.
Miss E ... So Addictive - Missy Elliot - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-CJXwQJZaM
200 km/h in the Wrong Lane - Tatu - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1agzp_PM-Z4
Temporarily ignore the faux-schoolgirl lesbian bit, however much a part of their popularity that was, they were actually very good at electro-pop, and even better in Russian - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-F-JfWqMG6g
Songs in A Minor - Alicia Keys - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNm7h9LgdDc
Fallin' is still my favourite Alicia Keys song. A mixture of the bass line and the catchy tune, which now will not leave my head for a week.
No More Drama - Mary J. Blige - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uh1tsN1KmJA
All I knew about Mary J. Blige was some half-remembered stuff of her duetting with someone who I don't even remember for a number 1 when I was very small and the ITV Chart Show was still on. So I'm watching Jools one night and she's on and I'm all ho-hum and then I hear Family Affair. I was hooked. Awesome album.
Britney - Britney Spears - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVzrhav8LKk
The fuss this caused on first release!
Laundry Service - Shakira - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_LkjpYx8do
How can you not love her, although she's another one I prefer in a foreign language (Spanish rather than Russian, although I have no doubt she would sound equally lovely in Russian) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKS7QkYvum0
Mizzunderstood - Pink - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-qfASpzNh8
I went for Family Portrait but any of the singles would do. I remember when someone I know complained when she bought the album because she'd been fooled it would be up-tempo fun a-la 'Get The Party Started' and ended up with Pink's therapy sessions - the album.
Cartoon Heroes
Discovery - Daft Punk - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAjR4_CbPpQ
A concept dance album, with videos that match the story that the act are trying to tell. I remember really wanting to see each new video to see what would happen next.
Gorillaz - Gorillaz - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ozb39Bgh9w
But at least with Discovery there was a real band behind it. Gorillaz were a genius idea, even if their first album wasn't that good.
When Britpop Went Soft
Some quick editorialising. I liked the early stuff from both of these bands. I feel they both went soft with these albums. Because they were the soundtrack of my teenage years, I am having great difficulty in not throwing my arms around and yelling about them selling out. I am more forgiving in the case of Feeder.
Just Enough Education to Perform - Stereophonics - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rPe0BtYvTA
Echo Park - Feeder - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVdFx7BENcE
The continued rise of nu-metal/rap-rock:
Iowa - Slipknot - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRwEtrGYW_I&feature=related
Thefakesoundofprogress - Lost Prophets - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5x1wwfmr6Bo
A British attempt at nu-metal. Only them fitting into this category better stopped them being put into the 'bands I hate but were disturbingly sucessful' section.
The next two get put together because they mesh nu-metal and folk music.
Toxicity - System of a Down - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWSxELGNShk
Revolution Revolucion - Ill Nino - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAkuX25E1Y4
Another one of the bands that I wish had been bigger, but with them at least I know it was because of changes in line-up. I really love the Aztec (or possibly Inca) art that they used.
I don't call either of the next two bands nu-metal or rap-rock, but they got lumped in because of the dread hand of Durst.
Break the Cycle - Staind - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5y7p06f0EWo
Come Clean - Puddle of Mudd - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJJsoquu70o
Albums by bands that I loathed but were popular:
All Killer, No Filler - Sum 41 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emGri7i8Y2Y
Obnoxious bratty pop punk. I see no appeal.
Is This It - The Strokes - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tuvX_X7Rlw
If I want to listen to unintelligible post-punk, I will listen to the Fall. And you, sirs, are not the Fall. I swear half my dislike is due to the music press being quite so ridiculously over the top about them, but that obviously has nothing to do with Albert Hammond's Dad being on the board of one of the record companies.
Misc. Others
Free All Angels - Ash - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYpiAePe-1s
I hereby put this forward as one of the best albums of the 2000s. It's the lush orchestration of all the tracks, the range and that Walking Barefoot, the first track on the album, sounds exactly like spring rain. I love it.
Lateralus - Tool - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhjG47gtMCo
The epitome of a band where much though I don't like them, I think they're very good.
Origin of Symmetry - Muse http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5CbhCSnv38
Bliss, one of the three Muse songs I actually like. It's their second album and the first where they have more than one song (because really, Muscle Museum, Plug In Baby and Sunburn are the same song).
White Blood Cells - the White Stripes - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXmF3an6kYI
I remember hearing the last chorus of this on Kerrang. And I was hooked. I loved the stripped back thing, and I find Jack White's voice pleasing. It's one of the dubious pleasures of being tone deaf ;)
Tenacious D - Tenacious D - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcJwz7wu8_s
This album was everywhere, to the point where a room full (~30 of us) sang a word and time perfect acapella version of Tribute during a friend's 16th.
Silver Side Up - Nickelback - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cQh1ccqu8M
Brushfire Fairytales - Jack Johnson - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mGeETlU74o
I know, you're thinking, but Red always complains about boring one guy and his guitar type music. Except I really like Jack Johnson, because he has witty lyrics, and I like wry which he does very well. (The album also contains bitterly angry and deeply amused.)
Know Your Enemy - Manics - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2lca_6uLoY
Despite everything, I still like this album.
Mutter - Rammstein - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTD8hbXgMW0
Or as my Mum calls them, the band with the s&m Snow White. The whole album is so solidly good that it's a shame to only put in one track. The only downside of them singing in German was people asking me to translate and having to try to explain some pretty twisted metaphors to someone. Because Rammstein do not translate well.
Iowa - Slipknot - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKBchY24qaY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpgbW27VQu4
I'm using this as an excuse to post 'Iowa' because it's my favourite track on the album.
Silver Side Up - Nickelback - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmuIhoCpkZ8
If the Alicia Keys album is 'Songs in A Minor' these are songs in the key of I have Daddy issues.
Menace to Sobriety - OPM - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDWnKNbGYug
I got this as a two quid semi-freebie because it had lost its case. Some of the best money I have ever spent. I love this album, because, despite it all (and my choice of El Capitan as the track) it's actually very reflective and interesting.
One hit wonders: This just refers to the UK, in case they've had other hits elsewhere.
Flavour of the Weak - American Hi-Fi - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u514QzM7KPw
Smooth Criminal - Alien Ant Farm - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBT3QEcDCxs
Moi ... Lolita - Alizee - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsKMTAVdlww
Temporarily skip the creepy over/undertones, and enjoy the classic euro-pop underneath.
Because I Got High - Afroman - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeYsTmIzjkw
I have no idea why people think this is pro-weed, given the sequence of what happens to our protagonist. I think this comes under the heading of the moral majority needs to actually listen to what is going on before they complain.
Others:
Loco - Fun Lovin' Criminals - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZJ1IWQAgbU
Gloriously cheesy, on an advert and then came the mysteriously popular video.
Can't fight the moonlight - LeAnn Rimes - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjMGtb3MDWo
This was everywhere and appeared to be number one for a ridiculously long time.
Stupid Kid - Alkaline Trio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAuvtHaCnYU
It was either this or Private Eye.

Crystal - New Order - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZzyZSjAQxs
Rocking the Suburbs - Ben Folds - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9JaauwDlV4&feature=fvst
I love this, if only for the lyrics (http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Rockin'-The-Suburbs-lyrics-Ben-Folds/7F5628AC2417B70A48256DE9002E37DA)
Can't Get You Out of My Head - Kylie - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rfr9bhSmfXc
This song is not lying, it will not be removed by anything but another earworm. Also a kicking video, if only for one of the most interesting uses of tape.
Worst Comes to Worst - Dilated Peoples - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-Z-4973tN4
I really like the chorus of this one.
Wish You Were Here - Incubus - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtB-YN03XDg
Everywhere, and deeply beloved of my friends of an alt-rock/indie persuasion.
Don't Stop Movin' - S Club 7 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2q3FJTFgtk
I have to give S Club this, they made catchy pop songs.
Hero - Enrique Iglesias - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owTmJrtD7g8
Yeah, I don't like it either, but it was a huge hit, and I am quite fond of young Mr. Double-glazing (tm Terry Wogan).
Gotta Get Thru This - Daniel Bedingfield - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4eMyOzD9UI
What Would You Do? - City High - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gyg5IoEv8oA
21 Seconds - So Solid Crew - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Fr7DVrtGms
I really like the idea of the songs (all five gazillion members of So Solid get 21 seconds to rap), and again, it's part of the rise of home-grown rap/grime in the UK.
Lady Marmelade - Mya, Pink, Little Kim, Christina Aguilera - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQ7cOE28JpY
Let Me Blow Ya Mind - Eve ft. Gwen Stefani - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4FZ9F7S1Uw
To Have and Have Not - Lars Frederiksen and the Bastards - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaI05cj9Ltk
Probably one of my favourite cover versions, mostly because it changes stuff that needs to be changed for it work as a song by Lars Frederiksen and the Bastards. This song got me through a bad couple of bad days back in the day.
Bleed American - Jimmy Eat World - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yud6TmNJWhY
I love the chorus.
Heaven is a Halfpipe - OPM - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1QMFOR5wi8
There may have been a certain level of friendly debate in the changing room at school over this. I was on the pro - side.
This was also the year where if you had down-tuned guitars, famous siblings in nu-metal bands or just lots of tats and jewellery, you got a record contract.
Youth of the Nation - P.O.D. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEVPoo0kOa4
Giving In - Adema - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhtAyQIn1nY
Painful confession time - I know they only got their deal because the lead singer is Jonathan Davis's half-brother. I know they were copy and paste nu-metal. And yet ... I liked them.
Butterfly - Crazytown - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fl6BiileOrg
When boybands went all RnB:
Girlfriend - N*sync - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fl6BiileOrg
I still don't get why Justin Timberlake was the breakout star, given that JC was the interesting one, although by this time they really were just the JT backing band.
All Rise - Blue - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkWQDDv_qdg
Dance:
Played-A-Live (the Bongo Song) - Safri Duo - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faMKAUW1ks0
One of my friends had this on repeat in her car, so I attach this more strongly to my uni days but this was everywhere.
Hey Baby - DJ Otzi - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNsmiqmaEWo
From Mozart to Otzi, sublime to the ridiculous. And yet, despite it repeating like bad food, I have a soft spot for this.
Castles in the Sky - Ian Van Dahl - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjTV8i_KjXM
Starlight - Superman Lovers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsio3uDnwm4
Really freaky video.
Who Do You Love Now? - Danii Minogue - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC5i6JTK6bI
~~~~
Two exceptional cases:
Teenage Dirtbag - Wheatus - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jJWQkVgDs4
Released in 2000, but only made it really big over here in early 2001 (this is the problem with using Wiki as my main resource). My boy cousin has the album, and the plot of the video (minus the threat of violence) did pretty much occur to a friend - during the great Maiden revival, he managed to get a spectacularly attractive girl to go with him to a Maiden gig.
White Ladder - David Gray - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jT8Q7Y5nq-E
Released in 1999, but huge from summer 2000 onwards.
Here come the girls: Heading, because really, of the albums I picked out, huge numbers of them were female acts.
J. Lo - Jennifer Lopez - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=190cupYNxN4
I can't vouch for anywhere else but this album and particularly this song, where huge at our school.
Scorpion - Eve - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSxjFPuoTC8
Survivor - Destiny's Child - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHbPQklMMBs
Absolutely inescapable, particularly bootylicious, which I hold responsible for the introduction of that to common parlance and for the trend for adding -licious to the end of everything.
Miss E ... So Addictive - Missy Elliot - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-CJXwQJZaM
200 km/h in the Wrong Lane - Tatu - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1agzp_PM-Z4
Temporarily ignore the faux-schoolgirl lesbian bit, however much a part of their popularity that was, they were actually very good at electro-pop, and even better in Russian - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-F-JfWqMG6g
Songs in A Minor - Alicia Keys - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNm7h9LgdDc
How can you not love her, although she's another one I prefer in a foreign language (Spanish rather than Russian, although I have no doubt she would sound equally lovely in Russian) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKS7QkYvum0
Mizzunderstood - Pink - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-qfASpzNh8
I went for Family Portrait but any of the singles would do. I remember when someone I know complained when she bought the album because she'd been fooled it would be up-tempo fun a-la 'Get The Party Started' and ended up with Pink's therapy sessions - the album.
Cartoon Heroes
One of my friends had this on repeat in her car, so I attach this more strongly to my uni days but this was everywhere.
Hey Baby - DJ Otzi - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNsmiqmaEWo
From Mozart to Otzi, sublime to the ridiculous. And yet, despite it repeating like bad food, I have a soft spot for this.
Castles in the Sky - Ian Van Dahl - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjTV8i_KjXM
Starlight - Superman Lovers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsio3uDnwm4
Really freaky video.
Who Do You Love Now? - Danii Minogue - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC5i6JTK6bI
Two exceptional cases:
Teenage Dirtbag - Wheatus - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jJWQkVgDs4
Released in 2000, but only made it really big over here in early 2001 (this is the problem with using Wiki as my main resource). My boy cousin has the album, and the plot of the video (minus the threat of violence) did pretty much occur to a friend - during the great Maiden revival, he managed to get a spectacularly attractive girl to go with him to a Maiden gig.
White Ladder - David Gray - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jT8Q7Y5nq-E
Released in 1999, but huge from summer 2000 onwards.
