Catching up on film reviews

Wiser heads than me have written about how weird, wrong and bad it is to have Scarlett Johansson as Major Kusanagi, so I shan't be writing about that.

The thing that freaked me out was how things that the Major did in the animated film version became things that happened to her in this.

Obviously it's not a shot for shot remake but there's several scenes that are blocked to look and play out in really similar ways.

The example I'm going to use is from towards the end, so there's slight spoilers.

In the big end fight, in the animated film, already injured and knowing that interfacing with the wild killer robot guards will do her further damage, the Major chooses to plug herself in to solve the mystery.

In the equivalent scene in the live-action film, the robot plugs the Major into itself.

It's not the only example, but it's probably the clearest because of how similarly the two scenes are shot.

It gives the film (and the Major) a very different vibe than in the animated version, and I do not approve.

Batou is my favourite, but if Batou isn't my favourite in any version, that's probably a signal that I'm trying to tell you I've been kidnapped and am being held against my will.

Comment on this post. I will choose seven interests from your profile and you will explain what they mean and why you are interested in them. Post this along with your answers in your own journal so that others can play along. The ones chosen for me are the following.

Far too long ago, Fileg posted this meme on her journal and picked 7 of my interests. Since 3 of them are taking a little longer than expected, I hereby present the first four:

TV guide interview re: Dragonball film

TV Guide: You’re plunging into a big sci-fi feature next. Can you talk about the live-action Dragonball?
Marsters: Dragonball is the coolest television cartoon in the last 50,000 years. Its only failing is that the female characters aren’t drawn well — we’re going to fix that in the movie. It’s got a Shakespearean sense of good and evil and there are incredible action scenes with characters of unbelievable power. It’s going to be really visually exciting. I was told the budget is about $100 million.

TV Guide: Nice to know you’re so enthusiastic. Who do you play?
Marsters: Lord Piccolo. He’s thousands of years old and a very long time ago he used to be a force of good but got into a bad argument and was put into prison for 2,000 years. It got him very angry, and he finds a way to escape and then tries to destroy the world. The cool thing is, anybody who has seen Dragonball knows that Lord Piccolo transforms into a character named Piccolo, and that is a whole other ball of wax. That is one of the most popular characters in the whole series. I’ve been told I’m working for people who will just flay me alive if I give too much information, but what I can tell you is the character is green, bald and has pointed ears. Heroic wouldn’t be the wrong term by the end, but it’s a long journey.

1 - Okay, the new James Bond film is called A Quantum of Solace. Which would be the title of my favourite Bond short story. So I am squeefully happy. I am well aware that nothing from the story will feature in the film, but if it has any parts set in the Bahamas or any of the characters make it over, then I will be sooooooo excessively happy that I shan't come down from the ceiling for a week.

2 - James Marsters as Piccolo in the new Dragon Ball film. See also: squeak-inducing.

I was floating about hither and thither and someone said that the voice cast for the English dub of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles had been announced, and I was like 'hmm, who would I really want as Kurogane?' (the one in my icon, btw). The voice in my head when I'm reading the manga is Brian Drummond (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0238546/) who was Zechs in Gundam Wing, but I said that I'd be happy with whoever did the voice for Picolo in Dragon Ball Z as a reasonable substitute, since they have very similar voices.

And while it's not Brian Drummond doing it, it's Chris Sabbat (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0754526/) who did indeed voice Picolo. So I am not going to complain, at least not until I see it.

Yeah the lack of updates is due to me feeling wiped out and having nothing to write.

Mainly I have been main-lining the Sci-fi Channel and Bravo, with the occasional bit of Sky.

Sci-fi have been re-running Farscape and it's in the middle of a three parter in Series 2, where Crichton has managed to to get himself nearly married. I haven't seen it before and it's rather good, except for Aeryn being a little OOC.

Plus one of the minor characters, Counsellor Tyno, is adorable. )
And various other tertiary characters also rock the socks. And Scorpius is being all witty evil.

But before that Sci-fi are showing 'Bubblegum Crisis' and 'Gasaraki'. I like them both. Selina on BC is a little too squeaky for me, but pretty much everyone else is cool. All hail Clamp.

I understand why they're comparing Evangelion to Gasaraki, but I think that it doesn't fit. Because while Gasaraki does share the oddness and the mecha thing, it's a far, far better programme. (Okay for the record, I really didn't like Evangelion because it bored me)

Again the characters do not annoy me, except Misuzu, and she has the whole Dawn thing going.

I'm really psyched about the next episode because revelations (or what passes for revelations on this crazy programme) have been promised and one of them has to do with one of my favourite characters.

I also keep catching bit of Dragonball Z and Dragonball GT on CNX. How much better is DBZ than GT?! I mean it really is. In GT it's all oh the bad guys are easily defeated because of how great Goku is.

And no, my problems have nothing to do with the wimpification a la Spike of Vegita, or the complete lack of Picolo. Really, well not much ;)

I want evil Vegita back. Although in the bits I have watched so far he has had his moments. Plus he was in the middle of battle and had one of his traditional, 'Goku is sooooo not better than me' rants. Got to love him.

Still here's hoping Android 17 beats Goku.

Just saw the Escaflowne episode from which this icon comes. It was good, for there was lots of Folken and Allan was actually nice for once. Plus there was a minimum of Hitomi, and after watching Sailor Moon even Hitomi at her worst doesn't seem that bad.

Someone else I know has just been reading 'As You Like It' and suddenly something on Cowboy Bebop makes a lot more sense. Ganymede indeed. To quote Sam, "For a supposedly clever person, you're really stupid sometimes." He is my friend, therefore I do not smack him as much as he richly deserves.

New Year's Resolution: No more crying over cartoons, no matter how well drawn, acted, filmed, soundtracked and generally made they are.

Reasoning - CNX weepfest hour involving the episode of Gundam Wing where Zechs finally gets to the Sanq Kingdom, and has his talk with his father's portrait (and sets up the trouble at the end of the series). Plus Noin. And Otto.

Then having recovered due to a fine episode of Outlaw Star on come Cowboy Bebop.

Session 13 (Jupiter Jazz part 2). I say I had perfectly good reasons for going weepy. But no more. I shall resist in future.

I would also like to say that Vicious is the more cruel, callous, heartless, vile and evil bastard ever to cross my TV screen.

However, I feel sorry for him. He's so broken.
