On the upside, there's only one spider in my bedroom. On the downside, that's because it's eaten the others and has grown to stupidly large proportions. Not quite the giant spiders of Metebelis 3 but definitely ancestral to them.

I spent last night on the sofa in the living room. It is not comfortable enough.

Will see if I can convince the friends coming over next weekend to get rid of it for me. They have survived Australia, they should be able to cope with non-poisonous spiders.

On less arachnid-ridden matters, would anyone be up for beta reading an X-Men First Class fic for the [livejournal.com profile] xmmficathon. It's about half way done and I expect it to be ~ 8000 words when it's finished.

Day 03 - Your favourite series

An entirely impossible question. Contenders would be the Aubrey and Maturin books, which I would be racing through, if I hadn't lost 'The Mauritius Command' again. It appears to be a book which enjoys going missing. Other than that, I'm a huge fan of the Peabody books, Linda Fairstein's stuff, and my Mum has been known to hide the new Powerscourt books (by David Dickenson. No, not that one, a different one.) from me. I really like the Horrible Histories and the various other Horrible variants as well.

The Other Days )

Other than that, I'm mostly having a minor attack of the panics over my x-men ficathon fic.

I have my [livejournal.com profile] xmmficathon assignment. I have an idea. Writing it, however, is going to be difficult. If anyone wants me for the next couple of months, I'll be scribbling.

Final call for the X-men Movieverse ficathon -

~~~~
Semi-related RL story, a guy tried to pick me up using the word groovy. I stopped laughing long enough to turn him down, but someone really ought to tell him that hasn't worked since the 60s and right now it really doesn't work on anyone who has seen X-men:First Class.
~~~~

Film related, I got forwarded the Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy trailer (http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/video/2011/jun/30/tinker-tailor-soldier-spy-traiker?CMP=twt_fd). Mostly it seems to be every kind of wrong (sorry [livejournal.com profile] wishtheworst, you might have got a lot of this on twitter), every single solid kind of wrong it could be which is annoying because I love pretty much every actor involved.

~~~~
Now that I have finished the 30 days of tv meme, and the music one and the film one, I think it's high time for the book one, as pinched from [livejournal.com profile] opera142.
Day 01 - Best book you read last year
I'm really bad at keeping records of what I read, plus I re-read books a lot. I've also been on a bit of a non-fiction kick and I find them harder to compare.
Probably though it would be between:
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Immortal-Life-Henrietta-Lacks/dp/0230748694 [other booksellers exist /bbc]) which was really interesting but maybe a bit too gonzo for my taste.
How Things Are Made: From Automobiles to Zippers - (http://www.amazon.com/How-Things-Are-Made-Automobiles/dp/1579122744) because how things are made is one of those things that interests me and has interested me for a long time.
The Panda's Thumb (http://www.amazon.com/Pandas-Thumb-Reflections-Natural-History/dp/0393308197/ref=sr_1_1?s=booksie=UTF8&qid=1309453534&sr=1-1) because I love the way Gould writes.
X-men Movieverse fic first draft done. Now to fix it to the point where it's actually readable.
Also finally finished another 50kinkyways fic, and the first chapter of something else.
Hopefully I'll finish a few more things off before the work in progress meme.
A Favour
It's time for my yearly request for a beta for my X-men ficathon fic. Anyone up for giving an X-men fic a quick read through?
redfiona99: (Default)
If I die before I finish one of the fics I'm working on, I would consider 'why did she ever try to write first person present' a suitable epitaph. This is going to end badly.
Other than that, the not quite Ric/Randy fic is finished but still lacking something, so I am pondering what to do with that. I do at least finally have an idea for a title.
If I ever wrote a wrestle_secrets post it would be 'I wish it were harder to write Orton', because I don't think it says anything good about me that I find him easy to write. Then again, in the 50kinkyways fic I'm working on right now, I have suddenly got stuck at the point when I realise that he's the least skeevy participant in a fic. It feels strange and wrong.
X-men Ficathon fic is bubbling along nicely, though I'm pleased to have till Nov. 19th to finish it.
On matters more scholastic, I'm hoping [livejournal.com profile] evilgmbethy's freshers week (or US equivalent) is going well. I raced down to ours and it was chaos. Not helped by the Students Union building being out of action so the societies, associations and sports socs having to share a giant marquee tent. The outdoor temp is somewhere in the tepid mid-teens, the in tent temp is somewhere in the upper twenties. I dread to think what it's like in the huge unis you get in the States.
Managed to get to the fencing stall to sign up, and live in the hope that tae kwon do are as nice as they usually are because the fencing lot were winding them up something rotten. As a short explanation, we've always had a certain crossover between the two clubs (our halloween social is a joint one between the two) but occasionally idiot boys will be idiot boys, and I know the fencers will come off fifteen times worse in that fight.
Still looking after the housemate's girlfriend's fish. Wish she'd clean out the tank and top up their water. None of the rest of us have ever had tropical fish so we're terrified of doing it, but it needs to be done. If I didn't think it would scare the fish I'd take a photo. It annoys me though. Most other animals I've got experience of or something similar, fish, no luck.
Picked up my first cheque of the new academic year, most definitely not to be sniffed at. I have no idea how any funded PhD student manages to spend beyond their means, we get shedloads.
The mods suggested that writing a note to the writer might help them. I've never written one of these before so um, yeah, here goes:
I like mutant politics stories, and where your beliefs clash with your everyday existance, that kind of thing. So anything you can do with any of the requests that includes mutant politics will be greatly appreciated. In regards to request two, I prefer Magneto as a mad well intentioned extremist rather than a 'mad old terrorist twat' (apologies for the language, I blame Grant Morrison).
Other than that, have fun.
I have anonymous commenting enabled so if you've got any other questions, just drop me a line.
Thanks,
Red Fiona
This year I had some really interesting prompts to work with, I went with the following:
No Going Back (1/1)
Pairing/scenario requested: Hank and Ororo - They stumble across the Xavier protocols while Xavier is still alive.
Warnings: Spoilers for all three films.
Gen-fic.
http://community.livejournal.com/xmmficathon/77748.html
I nearly goofed this one up, having accidentally written a reasonably decent fic that featured Hank and Moira McTaggart. Cue some severe and rather last minute massive re-writes. I'm reasonably proud of how it turned out because of how different the dynamic is between Hank and Ororo and Henry and Moira, and how different the setting and general feel of the fic are.
In which I spoil for my own fic )
The poor person having to cope with my requests, which all featured either Beast or Nightcrawler (I have a soft spot for the boys in blue) came up with this cracker:
Realizations In The Shadow of Wundagore - http://teh-no.livejournal.com/518548.html
The summary is 'Kurt goes home' and he does and it's a wonderful Kurt characterisation. He's sweet but with a wonderfully droll sense of humour and his fabulous piety. Even better are several of the support characters. And I got mutant politics and a story about us and them and everything I could hope for in an X-men fic. I encourage you to go and read it.
Would anyone care to do me a favour and give an X-men movie-verse fic a beta when I am done with it, for it is once again that XMM ficathon time of year.
Thanks in advance.
Just a quick plug for the X-men Movieverse ficathon (xmm_ficathon in my profile). It's fun, and sign ups end on July 20th.
X-men movieverse ficathon posting time
I wrote this:
Line in the Sand (1/1)
Morlock Ensemble (Callisto, Arclight, Quills) gen-fic
http://community.livejournal.com/xmmficathon/55478.html?#cutid1
It was an interesting process, I'm still not sure if I went far enough with my analogy or too far, and the writing is uneven. Also, Lizzie's beta threw up some interesting issues with my writing, inabilty to keep to a tense and misuse of punctuation being the most serious. Also, I have amusing capitalisation problems, given that I capitalise Mother and Father but not god. I'm not sure what this says about me.
And had this written for me:
The Man On The Flying Trapeze (Gen, PG)
http://community.livejournal.com/xmmficathon/50978.html?view=609570#t609570
It's Warren-fic and is exactly what I wanted, which, given how vague what I requested for was, is amazing in and of itself. The actual fic is even more amazing. Go read and love.
redfiona99: (X-men)
Does anyone have half an hour to spare to give an X-men movieverse fic a quick beta?
Unfortunately, it has to be sent into the ficathon it belongs to by Tuesday midnight BST. To say I am desparate is entirely accurate.
Have finished the first third. Am therefore on schedule. Go team me. Now if only the next part wasn't the most difficult to write.
redfiona99: (Default)
Got my XMMficathon prompts, I think I know which one I'll be doing, mostly because of the 3 options I can only write one of them.
So at this point I shall make my yearly request for people that have some spare time at the start of September and who wouldn't mind beta-ing an X-men movieverse fic, with spoilers for X3.
Other than that, there may be a short further delay on the scanination till the weekend, and the World Cup essay won't be finished by then either. And may well be longer than expected given that I've not even talked about the individual players yet, and it's already 2 1/2 pages long, and Marcello Lippi has already had 3/4 of a page dedicated to him and I've not finished talking about him yet.
redfiona99: (Default)
One downside to the PhD funding is that I now have forms to fill out. Damn! I hate filling out forms slightly less than I hate packing. But only slightly.
On the fic front, there should be another 50 Kinky Ways fic out soon, and Joanne, you'll be pleased to know that there might be another convert.
I may also be writing the most ridiculous thing I've ever written, based on an off-hand comment during the great joyous glorious sports weekend. And yet, I think it's a really cool idea.
Other than that, I've got a fic on the USB stick that's been sitting there, finished for about a month and a half, and yet I still don't want to post it, because, well it serves no purpose. It's a vignette so there's no plot, and it doesn't illuminate the characters so it's just sitting there. I don't know what's wrong with it, I just know that something is. I've even tried going 'open sesame' at it to see if it will reveal its secret, but no such luck.
One last thing, I've signed up for [livejournal.com profile] xmmficathon again, and seriously, there's one prompt I'd kill to write. Actually, if I don't get assigned that (which I don't think I will since, what's the chances of me getting that lucky again) after the fics have been handed in, I might ask the person who suggested it whether I can snag the idea, because it is truly wonderful.
First there's the X-men movieverse ficathon fic I've been working on
Author: Red Fiona
Title: Changes Confronted
Rating: R/15 - various words and situations unsuitable for those under said age.
Disclaimer: I don't own the characters, Marvel and Fox do, no money being made.
Summary: Changes happen whether you want them to or not, it's how you cope with them that matters.
Written for - Tommygirl
Character/pairing request 1: Pyro/Rogue
Specific request: Rogue finds John *after* X2 ends
http://www.livejournal.com/community/xmmficathon/28814.html
Secondly, I was watching Impact today, just after Hard Justice but before Slammiversary, and Road Dogg and K-Kwick were having an argument, and oh boy did I ever remember why I writing wrestling-slash. It was all, argh you love Billy more than me, no I don't, yes you do - we're not crew anymore.
