I haven't fallen down a well.

My birthday went remarkably well. It must be said, however, that the most useful present I got was this lovely icon from [livejournal.com profile] fileg. He's not only lovely, but he really is an accurate depiction of how I spend my time in RL.

Other than that, thank you BBC, A Scandal in Bohemia Belgravia was a wonderful early birthday present :)
redfiona99: (Default)
Step One
- Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fun ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.
- If you wish for real possible things, make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.
- Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ so that the holiday joy will spread.

Step Two
- Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:
- If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.
- You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call.
- There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

~~~~
Mine are the usual:
1 - A day late but the Amnesty International 'Write for Rights' campaign http://www.amnesty.org.uk/content.asp?CategoryID=10673 is a cause close to my heart. If you have ten minutes, an envelope and don't mind writing a letter, choose a cause close to your heart and write a letter for them.
2 - More selfishly, links to people who make icons and don't mind other people using them (with credit, of course). I am on the hunt for more icons, particularly a Sherlock one, an X-Men:First Class one (Mystique, equally of course), a Covert Affairs one and a Human Target one. The problem is I have a definite image in mind for the first two and I don't have the talent to make them. I think you have to have an eye for colours and shapes that I just don't have. So yes, icon recs please.
is by [livejournal.com profile] fileg. It combines several of my favourite things, which would be Data, who is my favourite TNG character, and music, even if it is a violin he's playing. I love the sparkles, and that if Data wasn't sentient, he couldn't make music but he can and he is, and he is not a toaster.
was the first icon I ever made. You may be able to tell this by the terrible cropping and the fact that it's the wrong width, and yet, I don't have it in me to get rid of him. Elrond really caught me the first time I watched Fellowship of the Ring, and I like having a pensive icon. Plus, I've now had it so long ~ 8 years that it's become a useful short-hand for it being me that made a post or comment.
is by [livejournal.com profile] radioactivepie. It features Kurogane, who is my favourite character in Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, my present drug of choice as far as manga goes. He's wonderful, and crabby and sarcastic and I love him. Any further description of why I love him would, unfortunately, be spoilery :)
Oh 11, present Doctor, who makes me very happy in oh so many ways. This is his of the series of numbered Doctor icons I have, although this was made in a rush after the first episode was shown and I decided I was in love (I am still totally in love). I will make him a new, better one one of these days, because yes, he deserves something less grainy. The problem here is the actor who, in posed photos always looks horribly posed, and is one of those people who looks better in action than he does when static and a lot of the shapshots taken mid-action are either unfortunate or do not work out of context.
Ah science, the thing I have foolishly dedicated myself to. The picture in the background is of an NMR spectrum, which is what I work with. The only problem, something I'm finding while writing up, is that the damn spectra do not make good pictures.
also by [livejournal.com profile] fileg. Let's be honest, if I got sorted, there's no way I wouldn't end up in Ravenclaw. I wanted a general university icon and this is the prettiest one I ever did see.
Day 13 - A Guilty Pleasure
I don't do guilty pleasures. I have no shame in adoring large chunks of the works of Steps. It's so shiny.
Although I should probably feel guilty that the past two days have both been BeeGees covers (again, have the original - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSVTOMkJdqs)
The other days )
As I said in the "End of Time" post, I was going to buy myself an Ood figurine. I have done so - http://forbiddenplanet.com/35996-doctor-who-series-4-action-figures-ood-sigma/
Unfortunately this lead to me finding out they make chibi plushie Chewbaccas. And plushie Ewoks. I am so doomed. If they sold Adipose, I'd already be beyond doomed.
I also bought volumes 7-9 of XXX-holic. I am eagerly awaiting the rest of Tsubasa.
I also made icons. One science one, where I've gone for the amide section of an NMR spectrum:
Photobucket
Then one of 11 - Photobucket
And also one of Ood Sigma. I have no idea what I shall use it for, but I felt a need to have it. Maybe as a misc. sci-fi icon.
Photobucket
On to stuff that other people might actually be interested in. [livejournal.com profile] elmyra has a really interesting post on 'Why Content Is A Public Good' (in the legal sense of the word). Very interesting, as I just said, and managed to make copywrite law make some kind of sense, which takes doing - http://elmyra.livejournal.com/497297.html
Diva Icons
Following on from last year's self-set challenge to make icons out of all the Formula one drivers, 2009's challenge was all the Divas. Some of them are good, some of them are less so.
Total Icon Count: 20
Teasers:
First, shiny new icon. Whee!
Any film! Gambit icon was always going to be my squee! icon, but this was quite literally the shot where I started squeaking in the trailer. I've also seen a more recent cut of it, and they seem to be going with the 'eyes only light up when powered up' thing they did with Storm, which I can deal with.
Thinking about his eyes, I find it amusing that he and Kurogane both have red/black eyes.
Secondly, talking about red/black eyes, I firmly believe that Christopher Daniels would be someone who would have said eyes if he were a comics/cartoon/manga character. I cannot, however, write him. Which is annoying when he's required for a fic.
The advantages of Gimp is that its really easy to do colour. The disadvantage is that I can't get the text function to work.
I might well swap the fencing one in once I've finished typing.
GIMP GIP
I have been messing about on the GIMP recently, since that's the image software installed on the Linux comp. I have at uni, and I felt I needed some practise before I use it for actual academic work, so here are the fruits of my labour. So far. I plan on there being many more diva icons, but for the time being, here's Mickey.
I should be packing. Really I should. Guess what I'm not doing, despite the fact that I know that if I did it in little bits rather than one big chunk I'd get less stressed.
I still hate packing.
Mum's actually coming on two days this time just to break it up, because I think she finally got that I wasn't being funny and packing really does depress me.
On to more fun things - Not happy about Nesta being out, especially as I fear that this might mean Zaccaro playing and Italy really don't need another own goal.
Phillipe Senderos should be forbidden for making me feel sorry for him when he's playing for Switzerland.
There is somewhere a photo of Michel Platini and Diego Maradona hugging. Anyone who is able to point me in the direction of it will earn my gratitude.
Also, check out the new icon, made by Greeniebach. I'm using it because it's only Zidane that's making me happy about France going through, because I don't think I could have stood it if his career had ended after the game against South Korea.
Since the post was mostly to show off my new Dr. Who 10 icon. It's not fantastic, but it's better than the old one.
I've also got an alternate one, which is this Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
In both, I wish I had something that could sharpen up his face because I think it might make the icon better.
Other than that, I've finally managed to hear the Eurovision winner (to be found here for those that haven't http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Py5Of-4kJ70). It's the kind of madness that makes me happy to be alive. I mean, seriously, who would expect a song that sounds like Alice Cooper's 'Poison' sung by lunatic Finns who more resemble the cartoony end of death metal to win Eurovision, more usually the domain of disco-pop.
Much glee at this end.
Icon Meme
Since this is the last time I'll have either the icons or the time to do this before Summer:
01. Default: Image hosting by Photobucket Because I can use it on most occasions, it's not offensive and doesn't push any agendas. Unless yay! Elrond can be counted as an agenda.
02. Oldest: See above
03. Newest: Image hosting by Photobucket Just uploaded it since I'm using it for the 50 Kinky Ways challenge.
04. Saddest: Image hosting by Photobucket I don't have any sad icons. I tend to do angry a lot easier than sad, but Danny doesn't look happy on this.
05. Happiest: Image hosting by Photobucket Mario by a country mile. He'd just played the winning rubber for Croatia in last year's Davis cup. It's also my default on the tennis account.
06. Angriest: Image hosting by Photobucket While the Roddy icon may look angrier, this is the one I use for situations where bad things will happen to whoever it is that annoyed me.
07. Cutest: Image hosting by Photobucket, well either that one or Mario.
08. Sexiest: Image hosting by Photobucket It's the only one of mine that's sexy in any way.
09. Most Humorous: I don't really have any funny ones. My TV one is funny because of the silly look on David Wenham's face, and the 'bothered' help one is amusing because it's Benicio Del Toro with pigeons landed on him.
10. Favorite 'ship: Don't actually have any 'shippy icons, if you don't count this one.Image hosting by Photobucket
11. Favorite fandom: On number of icons it's Dr. Who all the way.
12. Most used: Elrond.
13. Favorite I've made: I do actually really like the "Wonder" one because that took some time and it works.
14. Favorite(s) by someone else: Image hosting by Photobucket By Fileg
15. Favorite of the moment: That one. Probably.
16. Favorite overall: That one, because seriously it's one of my favourite icons ever.
17. How many icons do you have total? 34
18. How many can you have? 100
19. If you could buy more space, would you? I'm going to save the money till Easter and then probably buy myself 12 months of icon space.
20. Do your icons make a statement about you? Unnerving love of Dr. Who, absolutely unsettling number of angry icons. Possibly.
21. What fandom do you have the most icons of? Dr. Who.
22. What 'ship do you have the most icons of? Rather worryingly, Road Dogg/Billy Gunn, unless Dr. Who/Tardis counts.
23. How do you categorize your icons? A pretty bizarre mix.
24. Are your icons made mostly by other users? No, actually, I thought they would have been.
25. Do you make icons? Yes.
26. Are they any good? No. Sometimes they work well though, and that will do for me.
27. Animated icons are... a good idea sometimes. There's still a few I want to make.
28. In general I think icons... a fun way of dealing with pictures and words and conveying information.
redfiona99: (excited)
I love the Channel 5 "this much I know" adverts rock the house. Also why did no one tell me that Peter Stormare is probably on Prison Break. This is required information.
I also love the new Honda choir making car noises advert.
Other than that, I still hate, hate, hate Manchester Uni's post-grad application system.
And the request is - does anyone know of anyone who has made Randy Orton icons that are sharable?
redfiona99: (Default)
Growed ups are driving me mad, and have unfortunately left me with a bottle of Smirnoff vodka that I'm manfully (womanfully) resisting.
Enjoying watching the darts. I'm also in the middle of making more icons. Whoever said they were addictive was right. Still can't get a decent Jack Harkness one together though.
I don't know how many of you follow English politics, but the Liberal Democrats are having a leadership election because Charles Kennedy was forced to resign for various reasons. As has previously been noted in this journal, Charlie is my darling. This being said one of the challengers for the leadership, Simon Hughes, happens to be my favourite politician. Therefore I shall be cheering for him. Mainly because much like me he's a liberal leftie. And because he's an incredibly cool dude.
There shall probably be comments about this floating about on here. I know there's a couple of people on my f-list who I've filtered off on political posts, but is there anyone that wants to be filtered off for this? I ask only since the fight looks like it's going to get dirty since so far the candidates are:
Sir Menzies Campbell, pronounced Ming-is Campbell for reasons for reasons of letters that vanished with the advent of the printing press AKA Ming the Merciless, acting leader of the Lib Dems and the main force behind getting rid of Charlie. His supporters are known as Mingers.
Mark Oaten - on the right of the party (Lib Dems are a centrist party). Sworn enemy of Simon Hughes. Supported by Lembit Opik, an odd chap, even for an MP, who rather sensibly wants an oncoming asteroid early warning detection mechanism.
Simon Hughes - on the left of the party. I adore him. Is the sworn enemy of Mark Oaten. Telegraph has already started to smear him, he must be doing something right.
And someone else, obscure even for the Lib Dems who I've never heard of.
All camps have asked that the fight be political not personal and they want no muck-raking and slinging. Fat chance!
Also, since I'm talking about politicians, I was very sorry to hear about Tony Banks dying. There's not enough politicians who speak their mind and recently they seem to be dying off.
I've made another couple of icons
Also, seriously love my friends, for they know that I require alcohol without being told and have invited me out for drinks.
I said I'd make a strongman icon, didn't I? Well I did. It's not that good but I've only got MS Paint to work with. I might make some others later.
To Joanne - It seems like UK TV is going to have a glut of John Barrowman. He's going to be on an Celebrity Ice Dancing thing (with Torvill and Dean as the instructors, once I know who the others on it are going to be I'll start laying bets on who the first person that Christopher Dean makes cry will be), a Musicals thing, a Captain Jack spin off called 'Torchwood' which, if you remember the other thing that was called torchwood, worries me quite a bit and the new series of Doctor Who (boy, do I want to see Captain Jack's reaction to the new Doctor).
Meanwhile, on top of that, he's also in the West End run of 'The Producers'. God knows where he gets the energy from.
Also - is anyone else having trouble getting onto gmail?
redfiona99: (Dr Who general)
For the Christmas Invasion was good. Not perfect or brilliant, mind, but good, and I'll settle for that.
Basically, while Christopher Eccleston (number 9) was decidedly Tom and Colin Baker-esque, David Tennant (number 10) seems to be decidedly Jon Pertwee-ish. Since Pertwee is my favourite Doctor, I'm happy about that too.
Therefore I have gone a little mad with my icon space - all ten Doctors are up - http://www.livejournal.com/allpics.bml?user=redfiona99
I am mostly ignoring Christmas due to people trying to bring the party down. I'd like to see him try that tomorrow. Or rather I await Uncle Steve's reaction with rather large amounts of worry.
redfiona99: (star trek)
The argh! is quite simple - my family must never be allowed to talk about gay marriage ever again or else one of two things is going to happen:
1 - I will lose my temper and the fact that I'm kinda queer will be sprung onto them.
2 - I will lose my temper and go to town on exactly the kind of hypocrits they are and then the fact that I'm kind of queer will pop out.
Either way bad things will happen because inbetween my Nan objecting on moral grounds, and my Mother objecting because why should *they* be given rights that common law couples aren't (I don't know, because unlike common law couples they're stupid enough to say vows, and also Mum, you really have no right to talk since the only reason you aren't ever going to marry again is financial) I'm liable to explode with anger, and that would be bad.
I have to start sending pHD application forms in. Please excuse me while I wet myself with terror.
Nan bought me straighteners. After I expressly asked her not to. I know I'm going to sound like a brat since dude, it's a gift, but I don't straighten my hair personally for 3 very good reasons:
1 - it's bad for your hair
2 - I can't do it, I end up with frizzy hair with hideous kinks.
3 - I don't want to have straight hair. I love my uncontrollable frizzy curlwaves. They are me, and I am them. They make me stand out from the crowd. They make me memorable. I find it helps. I also don't want to look like every other girl out there with iron flat hair.
Anyway, enough of that, on with the cool.
1 - Saw the last half hour of TNA: Genesis
Before I get onto the spoilery bit can I just gush about how well they handled the tables. They made the tables seem scary and dangerous.
And now for the spoilery bits )
Thank you TNA.
Also, due to have icon space, I'm getting the chance to use one of my favourite icons ever.
What can I say, I've always been a Data girl. (Well okay, I was a Spock girl first but never mind.)
redfiona99: (slash)
I had icon space, I had a picture. I couldn't resist.
As I've been saying in other places, why is no one writing 3LK fic? Because from the time that Billy Gunn (sorry, I couldn't keep up with the name changes) arrived there has been so much to write about.
I am trying to fulfill fanfic rule 8 and write some myself instead of whinging but I'm hamstrung by my lack of TNA at uni.
On a similar tip, why is my inbox not being deluged by f/f wrestling fic. And who do I have to talk to to get some. Again, I am trying, but it keeps turning into porn.
Not entirely sure that that's a bad thing, but ...
Also I bring fic, it's a stupidly late challenge response
