This year seems to be all dance music. Since it's dance music I like, I am not going to complain:

David Guetta - Lovers On The Sun (Official Video) ft Sam Martin

Kiesza - Hideaway (Official Video)

Sigma ft Paloma Faith - Changing (Official Video)
Paloma Faith has gone from not being Amy Winehouse, via not being Adele to not being Lana Del Rey. I can live with this version better than the others.

On the not directly dance music tip:

OneRepublic - Love Runs Out
One Republic once again come up with something ridiculously catchy. If nothing else, they have a talent for earworms.

Cheryl Cole - Crazy Stupid Love ft. Tinie Tempah

And on the people who are not Lana Del Rey tip:

Ella Henderson - Ghost

Plumbing - Because I'm sure you're all as interested in it as I am ;) Basically, I've been in contact with the upstairs neighbour, who is much nicer than the previous post made him sound, and he's going to get it fixed, although given how confused he sounded by the concept of "get a plumber", I'm glad I've also got the building management company on it.

Puncturation - I had a blood test yesterday by one of those terrifying practice nurses who you can tell are practising. In between a highly unusual technique for getting the blood to start running (and I'm someone who bleeds well) and the "whoops, let me just get a different vial for a different test while holding the needle in and then standing up" manoeuvre, I have a particularly lovely bruise.

A Music Video - I'm really digging this at the minute

I do warn that it's an earworm though.

Brad Dourif in a music video!! A Calvin Harris music video! I am deeply confused.

I am also deeply confused by the French rugby team. How are you that bad? I mean beyond the obvious of Saint-Andre apparently being determined that no-one will play in the position that they are best at (with the exception of the front row but I think that's because you're not allowed to). You lot beat Australia not long ago. Now, I think you're going to lose to Scotland.

Wales - Yes, keep doing that. But more so. And less with the terrible scrummaging. And better choices when you have the ball because you're going to send Jonathan Davies grey early. Also, yet again the "it sounds like Jiffy is commentating on himself in the third party" problem occured, which I know isn't either Jonathan Davis's fault.

Italy - Okay, so it's because you were away, and that's fine. There were positives to take from this. Actually the coverage did contain one bit of really interesting stuff, because they were talking about how it was much harder to play away games, and Jill Douglas (probably) asked why, and Chris Paterson said he didn't know either, and spent time trying to figure out why, but he could never understand it, because "the ball was the same size, it was the same number of players and the same rules, but it was always more difficult".

Scotland - Yes, that's the idea.

Katy Perry's new (ish) music video, the one for 'Part of Me' looks and feels like it could have come straight out of the Federation propaganda in the film version of 'Starship Troopers'. This is not a compliment.

Quick question, you know those things you see in old time medical films, where the person has their arm in a sling and then the arm is suspended up on a pulley system. What are they really called, because much though I can fudge the detail, and might well do so anyway, I'd like to know that I'm at least fudging by choice, not by necessity.

Fic meme

1. Go to page 7 of your most recent WiP
2. Count seven lines down
3. Copy and paste the next seven lines of text

I tend to work on a lot of things at once so what I've done is arranged them by date, and then seen the most recent thing I've worked on that is at least 7 pages long. If nothing else, it's going to mean I'll get to do some editing.

(some time later)

I can't use one of them because the seven lines in question give away a huge spoiler for the film the fic is based on. And I can't use the other fic that's long enough because it's a surprise for someone. So I shall postpone this meme until I have something suitable.

Sadly I have had to take the king's shilling. This annoys me, because, other than being as proud as a pikestaff, I don't feel I need it, and I worry that I'm taking resources away from people who do need it. However, it's either that or let the council grossly over-charge my Mum for council tax (according to them you're either employed, retired or on job-seekers, there are no other states of being).

It's vexating, because it's annoying enough to be pressured into looking for work by one's relatives and friends, without getting it in the neck from the government as well.

This was after discovering that there are two six o'clocks in the day, first hand. It is information I do not enjoy experimentally observing. I had to get up that early to get down to London. I mostly pottered around the KCL campus at Guy's.

Also, my house has heating and hot water again.

Football

I am very happy about where the 2018 and 2022 world cups are going to be hosted.

I wanted Russia to get it, for two reasons:
1) they haven't hosted it before.
2) it wasn't a joint bid where even the bid presenters treated it as only one of the two countries was even important (I am looking at you, Ruud Gullit).

Also, I liked that Putin didn't bother to turn up to do any bowing and scraping. That's how you win with dignity. Although I did like what one Russian sports journalist said when asked how he felt, given that they'd won without sending princes and politicians - "It's not like we have any princes".

I have to admit I still haven't forgiven the England bid for including Milton Keynes and excluding Leicester, because, well, MK had to steal its football team, our lousy one is ours by right.

I am also happy the Qatar won because that's a whole region that has never hosted a world cup. And yes, I am aware that nowhere in Oceania has ever hosted it either, but if Australia are going to claim to be in Asia for the qualifiers then they're going to have to put up with being in Asia for hosting it too.

Music

First a selection of tracks from 'Sound of Silver' by LCD Soundsystem, which will also be mentioned quite a lot in my next 'Music From The Year ...' post.

North American Scum - http://www.box.net/shared/dsfxabsk08 Which remains a brilliant track, even if I prefer the live version.

Us v Them - http://www.box.net/shared/ui0pzt6o37 My favourite track that isn't a single.

New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down - http://www.box.net/shared/eiqkvxmbtp

Beady Eye (Liam Gallagher's new band) - Bring The Light

Oh how much I love this.

Do not look at the comments. Or rather do, unless, like me, you feel worryingly protective about the younger Gallagher brother.

Jessie J - Do It Like A Dude (NSFW)

I am not responsible if this song creeps up on you at inopportune moments during the day.

Film

Day 6 - Favorite actor/actress

I give up. I cannot do it. I can't choose. Plus a lot of my favourite actors and actresses do both film and television, and quite a lot of their better work is on the small screen.

However, Maureen O'Hara would mostly definitely come very high on said list. As would Katherine Hepburn. And Audrey of that name. And Rex Harrison. And ... you're seeing where the problem comes from.

due to stuff in RL. Mostly I think it's viva fear transmuted into excitability, but I'll take that over dread. In celebration of this, I feel I shall come clean. At least part of my objection to the new Green Hornet is that Seth Rogan does not look like this - Photobucket

I remain a sucker for a nice set of eyes.

Other, similarly vapid, comments include that if My Chemical Romance had come out with this sooner

I would have liked them more. As it is, I am having to reconsider my views on them, because I cannot declaim my hatred for a band that have produced something that much fun.

day 01 | a song
day 02 | a picture

day 07 | whatever tickles your fancy

Unspeakably late, sorry.

A Miscellany:

As promised Dave Allen sketches, still not the one I wanted but still very funny:

On his first day at school - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxo81Ok9Urk

The funeral sketch - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kLTbvjqF6Y Possibly my favourite of his sketches.

Sex - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDnDyjWSH4Y

Masturbation - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OA-chhs5uOA&feature=related

Formula 1:

Jenson Button is champion, which I don't begrudge him, but oh how I wish Rubens could have won. Mostly because he's been such a good sport about it. And I'm in love with Ross Brawn's brain, as per, because he's totally won it for Brawn GP. Blog on why this is all quite amazing here - http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/andrewbenson/2009/10/the_remarkable_story_of_brawn.html

Boxing:

Normally I'm all for cheering on the smaller guy, but I really hope Nickolay Valuev knocks seven bells out of David Haye - http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/8317039.stm - mostly because Haye is not only nasty in a most uncalled for manner, but because he always backs down when called on it. Because whichever Klitchko brother was going to fight him and mysteriously, a back injury happens.

Music:

I have finally found a video of Symposium, one of the lost Brit-pop, and how I still miss them - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1yo2SSvtxw (although I do prefer the live version).

Other lost brit-pop bands -

Gene - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kT1JSa_quLk - Speak to Me Someone aka the one where it's obvious that he wants to be Morrissey.

3 Colours Red - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5mCkIrbPvU - basically one of those unlucky bands (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3_Colours_Red) and this is my favourite of their tracks. Copper Girl, how you haunt my dreams to this day.

Hurricane #1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jPZgLszqRY Step Into My World, which I love for the guitar line. One of their members was a member of Oasis before they split up.

Elastica - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPeJixp-zp4 Waking Up - I had such the greatest crush of Justine Frischmann, the lead singer. She's still quite close to my ultimate woman.

Dark Star - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCRhcTJGfwA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6mZDWNo6RU&feature=related

Very personal choice, I saw the Jools Holland both of these are from and bought the album the next day which I just don't do. They are every bit as awesome as they look.

Other Brit-pop bands that just weren't as successful as they ought to have been -

The Bluetones )

Seahorses )

Cast )

Kula Shaker )

Feeder )

Mansun )

Space )

Ocean Colour Scene )

Idlewild )

Other than that, another link that won't ever not be awesome - Rage Against the Machine at the RNC - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYwzW2QFnwo

Um. Yeah. I had a good weekend. So I come bearing glee.

1) Yes, Twig was right, the Comicon 'Wolverine:Origins' trailer was indeed so much better. Even more awesome was the version I saw had the audience sound still on and it was cool hearing them oohing and ahhing when I did.

2) Compare the Meerkats.com http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=M0mXUC0cUPg

Just watch it. Best advert in a long time.

3) Sugababes - No Can Do video. While the song isn't brilliant I think at least one person on my flist will like it. Two words - human furniture - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=5RJ7bMY6BQY

Hunky, male, human furniture

4) Fic recommendation - Moving In by [livejournal.com profile] ukcalico - http://ukcalico.livejournal.com/284266.html

Torchwood, Jack/Ianto fic. Very heavily NC-17. Contains spoilers for Cyberwoman and Fragments. And it probably helps to have seen both of those episodes to appreciate this fic. You definitely need to have seen Cyberwoman. Because it is awesome )

Won't be around on the net tonight, I shall be watching the end of Sports Night.

Interesting article on tattoos here - http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060809/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iran_tattoo_generation

Edit:

Also Kasabian have been watching too much Sharpe - http://www.chartsingles.net/videos/view/796/kasabian-empire-video/

I <3 Kasabian

Evanessence are number one in the UK with 'Bring Me To Life'. And so they were on TOTP, and rocked. And when you think of the awful accoustics in the studio that takes some doing. Plus she, the lead singer, is so sweet.

If you only download one track this week make it 'Growing on Me' by The Darkness. Because both they and it are great. Plus the lead singer is making a one man campaign for the return of catsuits to rock. And for an increase in male nudity in rock videos. Very tuneful as well they are although the lead singer does bear an unholy resemblance to the impression of Mick Jagger done on 'Stella Street', which is a programme I heartily recommend.

On the odd side of things, Recovered featured the worrying sound of Westlife singing bits of a Metallica song (So What) which coming hot on the heels of Pharell Williams of NERD/the Neptunes singing bits of Our House by Madness confirms RE: Covered's position as the oddest programme on TV.
redfiona99: (Default)
Beg, steal or borrow to see the new Nick Cave video. Really, it's the most fun you'll have in a week.

Really liking the new AFI song.

Watched TOTP - my Good Charlotte are morons. But then again so are the people who say the brotherly members are cute. And before someone yells, this is all IMO.

No H, my opinions ain't humble.

The lead singer of the Androids really isn't cute, it's the guitar. Must keep telling myself that. Discussing cute though, there was a guy on CSI who was seriously good looking. Will look name and details up, further information hopefully to follow.

Dirty Vegas are rather good.

So, rather embarrassingly, are the Cheeky Girls.
Wish Feeder had made it big a couple of years ago.

Manics have a B-sides and covers album out. Looks like I'll have to buy it. Plus they're doing a Paul Robeson cover. I got major cool points for knowing who he was when they released 'Let Robeson sing'.

Off to watch Jools.
redfiona99: (pretty)
This is all Holly Valance's fault. Or rather her video director's. She's got a new video out for "Down Boy" (an annoyingly catchy tune) and one of my friends said how shocking it was.

When I finally got to see all of the video it turned out that it wasn't. She was sitting around groping some boys and some girls. But that was all it was, an attempt to shock, and it didn't work.

Meanwhile the video for 'Electric Storm' by U2 is wow, and no one has made a mention of it. I'm still figuring out how they got that one uncut, really, it's a lot like 'Wicked Game' by Chris Issak. Maybe it was because they didn't show everything. The old fashioned art of the tease. Meanwhile I have seen Holly Valance butt naked in her first video so there is nothing more to see.

Of course it could as have something to do with the U2 video have two well defined protagonists, whereas with Holly, it's Holly and various supposedly good looking but anonymous types.

Oh and the U2 video involves a lot of Larry Mullen, which may account for some of the bias :)

This would of course be a good time to point out that I need a life :)
