Unspeakably late, sorry.
A Miscellany:
As promised Dave Allen sketches, still not the one I wanted but still very funny:
On his first day at school - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxo81Ok9Urk
The funeral sketch - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kLTbvjqF6Y Possibly my favourite of his sketches.
Sex - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDnDyjWSH4Y
Masturbation - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OA-chhs5uOA&feature=related
Formula 1:
Jenson Button is champion, which I don't begrudge him, but oh how I wish Rubens could have won. Mostly because he's been such a good sport about it. And I'm in love with Ross Brawn's brain, as per, because he's totally won it for Brawn GP. Blog on why this is all quite amazing here - http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/andrewbenson/2009/10/the_remarkable_story_of_brawn.html
Boxing:
Normally I'm all for cheering on the smaller guy, but I really hope Nickolay Valuev knocks seven bells out of David Haye - http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/8317039.stm - mostly because Haye is not only nasty in a most uncalled for manner, but because he always backs down when called on it. Because whichever Klitchko brother was going to fight him and mysteriously, a back injury happens.
Music:
I have finally found a video of Symposium, one of the lost Brit-pop, and how I still miss them - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1yo2SSvtxw (although I do prefer the live version).
Other lost brit-pop bands -
Gene - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kT1JSa_quLk - Speak to Me Someone aka the one where it's obvious that he wants to be Morrissey.
3 Colours Red - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5mCkIrbPvU - basically one of those unlucky bands (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3_Colours_Red) and this is my favourite of their tracks. Copper Girl, how you haunt my dreams to this day.
Hurricane #1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jPZgLszqRY Step Into My World, which I love for the guitar line. One of their members was a member of Oasis before they split up.
Elastica - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPeJixp-zp4 Waking Up - I had such the greatest crush of Justine Frischmann, the lead singer. She's still quite close to my ultimate woman.
Dark Star - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCRhcTJGfwA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6mZDWNo6RU&feature=related
Very personal choice, I saw the Jools Holland both of these are from and bought the album the next day which I just don't do. They are every bit as awesome as they look.
Other Brit-pop bands that just weren't as successful as they ought to have been -
- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUpoFBm_QSw Slight Return, absolute earworm. Had a huge first album, second album flopped due to the record company messing up.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5Lk5FIVLMI&feature=fvw - If, by the same band.
They are at least still going because Bluetones fans are nothing if not loyal.
- Suffered from being John Squires's other band. Still damn good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gB3w3wgOo5M&feature=related Love is the Law
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mkgYFCDrqM - Blinded by the Sun
- not lyrical geniuses. In fact, let's be honest here, most of their songs have a repetitive quality ;) But good none the less. Suffered from the music press's hatred for Liverpool.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjEcdpXezT8 - Fine Time
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmqhsCUfw6A&feature=related - Alright
However, when they actually bother to pull their fingers out, they made some of the most hauntingly lovely music -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjFzUVCQ1vM - Walkaway
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzZfPzKSmyk&feature=related - Live the Dream, one of the few songs in a key I can actually sing in.
Cast themselves were made from the ashes of two other bands, The Las (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xX9TDQcCyVE&feature=related) and Shack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLwRf6kO16w), the short version of their joint history being drugs are bad.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wh7r_f_rw0c Hush
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXH-k2UkZTU&feature=related Hey Dude
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bYj2o7y4rk Tattva
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUIy-C9Jm-E Govinda
So far so good, then their lead singer mouths off, and generally there is a badly received second album, a split and then a reunion. And yet, I love them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIfWGKjZ8zE Two tracks off their new album.
- An awkward case, as they carried on having hits, but um, yeah, enforced line-up changes totally changed their sound. Their second album, Yesterday Came Too Soon, was an absolute masterpiece.
High, off their first album, the first track of theirs that I knew - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5k6F2kRkOI
Insomnia, off Yesterday Came Too Soon, quite frankly the sonic description of my early teenage years - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iK37ltctUPk&feature=related
Day In Day Out, lead track from YCTS, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X443ejuT28I&feature=related
- With them the problem was 'keep an eye on what the bass player is doing with your money'
Wide Open Space - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NgLV056kB0
Being A Girl - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xlJnipdpSc&feature=channel
Taxloss Lover - http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=pauldraperofficial#p/u/22/Pgri7y-IsVw
I Can Only Disappoint You - http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=pauldraperofficial#p/u/22/Pgri7y-IsVw which breaks me.
- There problem was a mixture of drugs bad, changing your sound out of all recognition bad, and just general blah.
Me and You vs the World - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joNeiTmW-jo
Mine and Sally's song, she made me a copy of the album with a cup of tea on the front instead of Spiders. Still their best song.
Neighbourhood - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vi81DkeTkLo&feature=related
Dark Clouds - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yw7GW9hiZBU
Female of the Species - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-wIvsZBFhQ&feature=related
Begin Again - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R136pVdgnPQ&feature=related
Avenging Angels - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaxipnPS96M&feature=related
Ballad of Tom Jones - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=of-ABC-0KM8&feature=related featuring Cerys Matthews from Catatonia, who aren't on this list because I think they were as successful as they could have been.
Okay, so they had a number one album, knocking Oasis off the top spot at the height of Oasis's fame. And yet, they get no credit, possibly because they were close friends of Paul Weller's during one of the periods where he wasn't popular with the music journos, and it was easier to attack them than him. But they were just so good.
The Day We Caught The Train - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uf5gGwGVaTk
The Riverboat Song (which was the theme tune for TFI Friday, which you'll have seen performances from previously) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfTePpibSxc&feature=related
Hundred Mile High City - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GR8NpxTZV6w&feature=related
Beautiful Thing - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bV4_AbEwKY8&feature=related
- again, reasonably successful, but not as much as they should have been
When I Argue I See Shapes - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPNFApou5_4
Roseability - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lg0mehFTr0I My friend Ridah's favourite Idlewild track, so an automatic inclusion.
American English - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lg0mehFTr0I
A Modern Way of Letting Go - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-wb4cbIt8s
What If You Held The World In Your Arms - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4k29rpQGG4&feature=related
- another lot who were reasonably successful, but not as much as I would have hoped for them.
Alright - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwjXgskUN50
Sun Hits The Sky - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6i8KmIKv5I
Moving - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-koax7HEYnE
- Split up way too soon, although I hear noises about a reunion.
Weak - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QL_5LF9Ph9U Her voice, the power, oh I love this song. Also, I wanted to be Skin (the singer) when I grew up.
You'll Follow Me Down - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_B9uWjSrzs&feature=related
Lately - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_B9uWjSrzs&feature=related
- Actually were successful but never get the praise they deserve. You will know these songs, but you won't know them.
Goldfinger - http://www.youtube.com/user/darthmarkh#p/c/B910D6CABB87FEB4/3/35hDrzcHnIA
Girl From Mars - http://www.youtube.com/user/darthmarkh#p/c/B910D6CABB87FEB4/2/FkSl9GGOFHM
A Life Less Ordinary - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szUeXBaOfl4
Shining Light - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZGcNx8nV8U Presently being murdered by Annie Lennox.
