Story actually starts on Thursday night.

Wandering lonely as an insomniac, I was on the computer when the fluorescent light in my kitchen flickered, then suddenly switched off. Along with all the other electricity in my flat. I go to the fuse box and find it hasn't tripped any of the circuit breakers. Confused, I give them a wiggle. Nothing. I go to sleep and prepare to ring the electrician in the morning.

Luckily, the electricity turned back on so I think no more of it. I ask a couple of people at work and their first response is to check that I didn't dream it.

Anyway, having over-slept, early this afternoon, I hear knocking going on round the entire block and overheard downstairs being told there's a fire. I leap out of bed to find clothes, because I can live with throwing a t-shirt on sans anything underneath, but being sans culottes in public is a bit much. I wander out to find two firefighters looking for a way into the meter cupboard from which was emanating a most unpleasantly fishy smokey smell.

Turns out, my still being in saved the day because I was the only one on my floor that knew where their key to the meter cupboard was. Fire has actually gone out but has left charred plastic in it's wake (which I guessed from the fishy smell, hello chloriney pongs. This is why scientists die early, we know what chlorine smells like.). Interestingly, it didn't knock out his electrics. Which is a bit worrying.

So yeah, I got woken up by firefighters today.

I'm glad you're okay, but all this chlorine sniffing doesn't sound healthy!

Thanks, I promise it was a lot less dramatic than it sounds.

I am starting to suspect that it's just general burnt plastic smell and my high school Resistant Materials teacher was lying to us.

OMG, so glad you're okay.

Woken by firefighters sounds like one of those things that should be sexy on paper, but in real life involve fishy smells and threat to life.

It was a lot less dramatic than it sounds. The only thing that worries me is that I (and the guy whose meter it actually was) are on the same floor as the fire but didn't smell anything, it was upstairs that smelled it and called the Fire Brigade.
