redfiona99This collection, collected by Great Pan and priced at the magnificent price of 2 shillings and 6 pence, contains The Fall of the House of Usher, the Murders in the Rue Morgue, the Masque of the Red Death, the Pit and the Pendulum, the Tell-Tale Heart, the Gold Bug, the Purloined Letter, the Cask of Amontillado, Ligeia, the Mystery of Marie Roget and the Black Cat.
Mostly, I've decided Poe is too much for me. Too much of everything.
That being said, The Masque of the Red Death, the Pit and the Pendulum and the Tell-Tale Heart are classics. They're probably the most restrained of the bunch but they zip along at pace and with atmosphere, most of terror.
You can definitely see how August Dupin influenced Sherlock Holmes, particularly the Purloined Letter and The Scandal in Bohemia. I don't enjoy the stories as much as the Holmes ones, Dupin is too superior to be abided.
