I am not convinced that this was a good film.

But TREEEEEEE! (Seriously, everyone I know who has seen it has taken to answering any questions about the film with shouts of 'treeee'.)

But really, I'm here for Groot. Totally here for Groot.

Other than him, my favourite was probably Drax. (Sorry, Opera). He's just very loveable. If somewhat single-minded. And possibly at least one friend has gone "no, you're Drax" when I say "I am Groot".

James Gunn is allowed to direct more things, because he makes space look beautiful.

I did like that everyone did turn out to be good when it mattered, from our 5 heroes, to the reavers and the Nova Corps. And OMG Peter Serafinowiz (whose name I have probably done things to) was not playing a bad guy. Although allegedly the character he played turned into a bad guy in the comics and I just love the image of someone who was a fan getting the chance to go "stuff that, he was a good guy and I believe he always will be" when they're writing the film.

I just loved the Nova Corp shield wall because it relied on all of them staying in place and they did. I'm also presuming there's a cut scene with more Saal and Rocket to make the scene where Saal calls out to Rocket work better. I mean it works, but there's something lacking.

In other random actor news, I feel I should apologise to anyone who was in the same showing as me because I may have squeaked inappropriately at the sight of Emmett J Scanlan as one of the prison guards. It's just OMG, Marvel's plan to cast every actor ever has lead to a tv actor I like getting a big screen role and I am asquee. He is, for those who want to know, a perfectly sound replacement for Aiden Gillen if your budget won't stretch to him now that he's in Game of Thrones. That's selling them both a bit short, but that's a rough attempt to describe him. Tumblrites, there may be a picspam shortly.

Also in re: this director can stay, the way he shoot the scene where Groot lets loose the bioluminescent seeds was awesome and I love that the film stopped for it.

In other actor news, is Lee Pace actually that tall or did the director et al do an amazing job of making him look huge?

Because they tell me Nebula wasn't given any motivation. What the hell do you call that scene where her "Dad" says that Gamora is his favourite? That's all the motivation Loki ever got and, unlike Loki, her Dad actually says it. (I'm also not convinced that Odin loves Thor more, or certainly not before the backstabbing.)

I'm not sure what the film version of reading comprehension is, but a lot of fandom seem to lack it.

It annoys me that we've now had two mainline Marvelverse films where the heroes (or at least heroes and friends of heroes) don't seem to notice or care that a character is holding people (sentient aliens are people too) in cages. The only person who seems to do anything about it is the Collector's assistant (who may be his daughter). What the hell heroes, indeed.

I mean I'm giving Sif and Falstagg a pass because I'm not sure if they were there and looking shifty because they'd stolen their what-d'y-ma-call-it gem (I cannot remember magicotechnobabble) and were giving it to the Collector for safe keeping because there's *something* wrong with Odin and while they don't know what it is, they can guess so they're making sure the gem doesn't end up in the wrong hands, or they're looking uncomfortable because Odin has sent them to give the Collector the gem and they know it's wrong and don't know why (because Loki has to pay back some debt or other to Thanos), but if we could maybe have one set of heroes pitch up at the Collector's eventually and go 'no, bad' I'd be obliged. Also, I see that someone told Benicio Del Toro to tone it down for this one.

I can see why several people have made jokes about this being a watered down Farscape film though, not just because of the characters, but some of the shot selections.

So you've got this young boy, who, when we see him is already very withdrawn, and then his mother dies horribly and he's not there for her (through no fault of his own). And there's this cartoon series he loves, all about the adventures of a talking raccoon and a sentient tree, and this fantastic primary colour world of the Nova Corps and he just imagines himself into it. Because goodness knows I did that when I was that age and I had nowhere near the same excuse.

Think about the way the kid's grandfather holds himself in the scene in the hospital and the way Drax holds himself when he's not hitting anyone. It's very similar, slightly hunched, and they're both men who are framed by their family situation and who are not good at expressing their emotions.

Then you've got Gamora, the "good" girl with her long flowing hair whose hand Peter can reach out and touch, which he never did with his mother, and her nemesis, a woman with no hair that can't be stopped and possibly, just possibly, Nebula is a stand-in for cancer and a woman who looks like Peter's mother pre-treatment is able to beat her.

Possibly Yondu Udonta (Michael Rooker's character) is a step-father or something who again, is doing his best but failing occasionally at bringing Peter up.

And the whole thing isn't a dream, as such, it's just 11 year old Peter Quill trying to process everything, and the end is where he's capable of accepting what happened to his mother and can listen to the now famous mixtape volume 2.

The main take home message though remains TREEEEEEE!!!
