As You Like It
Jun. 29th, 2013 08:14 pmJust back from seeing the RSC doing As You Like It.
It was fantastic.
While I could have done with a bit more subtlety about the court part of it, I like how clearly they differentiated the court from the forest.
I loved how they used the revolving stage, especially the first moment Rosalind, Celia and Touchstone come into the forest. It was wonderful.
It was a bit broadly done, but it's As You Like It, the actual material is kind of broad. But I liked it and the energy and the singing and dancing. The music was very well done.
I loved the acting, and given that the Orlando and Adam scene nearly made me cry, when Orlando, or rather the actor playing him, is Horatio in the Hamlet (that I am damn well going to go to see) I am undoubtedly going to wibble.
All the Orlando and Adam scenes were brilliant, and I loved that they gave Celia stuff to do. Her and Rosalind were adorable.
In fact everyone (including Oliver after the conversion) was adorable.
Their take on Jacques was a fine example of "not how I see the character but you're making it work". Although, because of the staging, I can't help but think of him as someone who has burnt his brain on LSD.
I don't think I can get across how joyous it was. Like honest to goodness I want to hug everyone I meet because we're alive and it is awesome levels of joy.
