My problem with Nu! Trek 2, or at least it's trailer, is that my feelings follow the pattern of those old jokes that go
Statement - boo!
Twist on statement - yay!
like this one (http://www.schooljokes.com/school_holidays/1.shtml) but the wrong way round.
It's things like:
There's no lens flare in the trailer - yay!
Instead it looks like its been filmed by a 12 year old with no access to steady cam - boo!
Cumberbatch is in it - yay!
They're making him put on a stupid growly voice when he can sound plenty menacing without it - boo!
I've heard a rumour that Cumberbatch is actually playing Gary Mitchell - yay!
But that makes no sense because the only reason that plot worked was because Mitchell was Kirk's best friend at the Academy and he wasn't in this 'verse - boo!
It's a woman who saves the day in "Where No Man Has Gone Before" - yay!
There's no way that that's staying the same even if they go with this plot - boo!
Wrath of Kahn is a good film, if that's what they're going with - yay!
So what on Eartch are they going to add - boo!
Rewatching the trailer with ex-housemate P has suggested that it's Kirk in the radiation chamber - yay!
There's sadly no way they'll kill Kirk off - boo!
And that last bit, much though my dislike for nu "I have Daddy Issues like all of JJ Abrams's characters" Kirk may be a little too obvious, is important. We know they're not going to kill these characters off (well none of the main three, Cho, Pegg, Yelchin and Ms Saldana, your characters I worry for). There is no peril here.
