Firstly, hi to
lilacsigil. I'd love to say excessively long posts about sport are not the norm, but they probably are :)

About the football, I know that this is an unpopular opinion, but while Liverpool's best attacking player is undoubtedly Luis Suarez, the player I want on my team is Dirk Kuyt, because he sets things up, goes for 90 minutes and never gives up. And also appears to be entirely without ego.
I'm loving Kenny Dalglish's answer to 'so was it a red card?' "I thought we played well." He's doing a reverse Fergie. Fergie goes 'hulk smash', Dalglish goes 'I only want to talk about my team'.
Niklas Bentner has picked up Wenger's French accent. He sounds ... different.

Saw the rugby in a pub. Saints continue to conspire to take years off my life with stress. And they keep forgetting that the first twenty minutes of the match exists.
I know you'll never guess by the litany of complaints that is about to come, but Saints won.
I have no idea how. I have seen them play worse, but rarely.
Jamie Foster, Tony Puletua, Sia Soliola and Lee Gaskell need remedial tackling lessons, Jon Wilkin, Scott Moore and Jamie Foster need to stop kicking so many aimless kicks. At half time, I said that everyone but Gaskell, Graham and Wellens needed to be taken out and soundly thrashed. By the end of the match, I'd extended that to include Makinson, Jamie Graham, James Roby and Soliola. But that's only 7/17. Serious improvement needed.
I think, and
wishtheworst is going to see this a lot on twitter (so apologies in advance), it was Wigan's penalty count that told against them. Okay, so I originally bitched about the referee but as the match went on he seemed to start pinging them for offside (and we all know every ref has a different definition of offside). I mean, they were still getting away with a few high tackles, including one that incensed Wellens, but they were being pinged for things they did wrong. And so many of them were unneccessary. The worst example was Hoffman interfering with the play the ball. Saints were in their own 22, they weren't going anywhere, it was something like the 3rd tackle. He'd tackled whichever Saint it was, fair and square, but held on when the Saint got up to play the ball. Absolutely stupid penalty to give away, if he'd been on my team I would have been livid.

On to the rugby union:
Dear Italian RU involved with the build up, why are you winding the Irish up? This is a team who work best when running on emotional fumes. When not emotionally wound-up, they do incredibly badly. Surely, it would make more sense not to to wind them up. As visual evidence - http://brightnshinythings.tumblr.com/post/10381785852/i-have-no-idea-what-the-ref-did-to-cause-this-but
(A Bergamasco (for Italy) decided to start a fight with the chap in green above. It did not end well, for Bergamasco.)
I want this known however, even with an emotional attachment to this match, I have no idea why someone would prefer union to league.

I keep forgetting how good Dragonheart is.
It's also probably the best CGI whose name is not Gollum.
Also, by the by, all dragons speak with a Scottish accent ;)

Interesting singer songwriter thing on BBC4 on Friday night, the only problem being when you invite James Dean Bradfield on it but get him to do Manics track. Now the Manics have/had two lyricists and two musical genii. JDB is one of the musical genii, I mean he's written an album of his own, which isn't bad, and 'Ocean Spray' which is beautiful, but he was having to go 'Nicky says this is a cheerful song about suicide' and 'I think Richey had been reading too many things about animal cruelty when he wrote this'.
