Okay, so Spain won, which wasn't the result I wanted, but hey, such is life. The thing that's going to annoy me is the press going how awesome they were, when they dived like submarines. And it's not like I mind diving, I'm an Italy fan, to object to diving would be hypocritical to an extent even I don't usually manage, but at least Italy get called out for their diving.

Other than that, I had fun. N and S came over, despite neither of them being football fans, so we played games as well. This was probably just as well, given that me and housemate O were making wildebeest noises every time anything happened. I dread to think what we would have sounded like if we gave the match our full attention.

Things I liked included this:

Iker Casillas laying a smacker on Mrs. Casillas (who is a TV journalist) - http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/12072010/58/world-cup-2010-casillas-celebrates-tv-kiss.html

This is funny because after Spain's first match, the loss to Switzerland, she interviewed him and basically just asked 'whut?'

Other than that, some words of wisdom from various sources.

"Four years ago we were hailed as champions, today we are playing like billy goats." Gennaro Gattuso, being his usual direct self.

"Goals, as a football legend once told me, are like ketchup ... sometimes as much as you try, they don't come out, and when they come, many come all at same time." - C. Ronaldo actually making sense.

And, from the department of known unknowns and unknown unknowns - "We all learn from mistakes which we make and from mistakes which we have seen other people make, and we try to avoid making them. This is the process of making a mistake and avoiding making it again, seeing how others make mistakes to avoid making the same mistake, it's a process which is not stable, nor can it be measured." - Chile's coach Marcelo Bielsa on the importance of learning from mistakes.

Some tournament stats - http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/12072010/2/tournament-statistics.html

Most importantly, North Korea really ought to have got some sort of fair play award.

Also, the only unbeaten team at the tournament were New Zealand. Yes, you read that right.

My two favourite photos of the ones up on Eurosport

Captain, oh my beloved captain, Cannavaro handing over the world cup at the start of the match.

Nigel de Jong committing GBH on Xabi Alonso.
