Cover Versions

redfiona99Since I'm a folkie I'm not quite as 'no thou shallt not cover songs' as most of the people I know, but is it me, or are there way too many cover versions going around.
First you've got the Pop Idol lot (I mean UK version). I hate and despise them both, and all they do is cover versions. Okay so Gareth did "Anyone of Us" and that was okay, but still.
So here's a list of cover versions playing today,
"Long And Winding Road" Gareth and Will - it's a lot like TE, they say only the winner gets a contract and they're all popping out of the woodwork. This is a Beatles tune they've covered, and while it's not one of my favourites, this is still an awful version.
"Suspicious Minds" - Gareth - if you've seen Lilo and Sitch, this is the one from that. This is pure sacrelige, and I have to turn over when it comes on because other wise I will put my foot through the TV.
"I Love Rock and Roll" - Britney - I like this song, but since I've not heard the whole thing I shall not pass judgement. What I have heard of it is not up to much, wishy-washy almost.
"Because the Night" - yup, that great Patti Smith classic has been given a dance makeover. Scarily enough, it works, like last years version of "Take Me Home (West Virginia)" mainly because while it sounds different, it keeps all the main important parts. That and I'm very happy that she'll get another hit record. For the record, I love Patti Smith.
"Take My Breath Away" - again, a dance makeover, but this time the opposite of the above. They've taken all the things that made the original bareable (mainly the vibrobass dun dunn noise) and left it with just the annoying parts.
"Like A Prayer" - another dance makeover, by a bunch who specialise in house-ifying Madonna tracks, hence their name of 'Madhouse'. I'm not that fond of their version of 'Holiday' but this is very good indeed. Not as good as the original, but what is.
"Papa Don't Preach" - what was it, cover Madonna week! Well, so long as they leave the 'Ray of Light' stuff alone, and 'La Ilsa Bonita'. Decent enough version and she was damn good on Top of the Pops.
More when I hear them.
