So last week
May. 16th, 2010 10:18 pmIt was one heck of a week. A week that actually started last Friday (the 8th), which is why my updates have been bit lacking.
My friend D, of whom much has been written, has just started a job in the US. His last week with us was last week, so on the 8th he organised a major drinking session at a local pub followed by a local bar. The tame American, who, for all that he's twice my height, is only 20, and was the major casualty of the night. Then again, housemate O wasn't looking too clever the morning after either.
The night ended the morning after with a Bar Dos breakfast. There was also Turkish Delight.
I spent Saturday recovering and Sunday writing. I went into the lab on Monday, because a friend had asked for some help with something. Of course, the way things work she didn't turn up (she didn't turn up for the re-arranged date on Thursday either). I'd blame her, but her supervisor's evil is legendary. My boss managed to find me 1500 other things to.
Tuesday and Wednesday were spent in the library writing.
Wednesday evening was spent with D et al., for beers and burgers at the Dry Dock. As that was the first pub D, with an awful lot of help from B, ever dragged me to, I think it was fitting.
It feels strange. D is the last of my old drinking buddies to leave and I feel bereft, mostly because the new lot aren't as much fun, don't hold their drink as well and seem to spend most of their time telling in-jokes and using TV show jokes or whining.
Thursday and Friday were spent in the lab. Friday introduced a new terror - prospective PhD students. We had 3 applicants for the PhD project that follows on from mine. I was the person they were told to direct any questions towards. Not fun. One of them was ridiculously over-wraught. I did try to calm him down before his interview, but I'm not sure it worked.
Friday night featured more drinking, for O's birthday party. I went home at about 11-ish, woke up bright-eyed and bushy tailed for Saturday morning.
On more general stuff, housemate D and his girlfriend has a giant, public (as in on the street where we live with continuance to the nearby park) blow out on the first Friday. Choice quote was her saying "[being with him] is a constant cycle of disappointment" (yeah, that hypothetical really wasn't). He dumped her, but when she grovelled and swore to behave better in future he took her back. They have been reasonably well-behaved since.
Saw the Europa Cup final. So very sad for Fulham, especially Danny Murphy and Brede Hageland. Still, it ought to settle forever any arguments about Diego Forlan not being any good. The Man Utd fan of the group was the first to agree that it was just Man Utd that he didn't click with.
I am resigned to the new government but was struck by something in the Times. They said most coalitions have to bridge gaps, but they could think of none that were quite so great as the present one which ranges from John Redwood on the right to Simon Hughes on the left.
There's also been some more RL bullshit, mostly whiny boys being whiny. One of them is a classical Nice Guy (TM) (he's also a man-splaining chauvanist wanker) and the other wonders why his girlfriend ditched him when he spent all his time going, "I don't know why she's with me." You say it often enough and then you wonder why she starts wondering too?! Yes, I know I'm being horribly mean, but there's only so much self-inflicted woe is me that I can put up with.
The handwritten draft of this was written on the train to Sheffield on Saturday night. I'm actually fencing on Sunday but due to the inadequancies of British Rail you can't get a train from Leicester to Sheffield by 11.30 am on Sunday so I'm overnighting it in Sheffield. In the Etap again :(
The fencing itself went not so well. Tricky pool. Couple of dodgy decisions in the DE. I'm 26th. Also, my period started midway through, which really didn't help matters, even if it did explain why my memory had been quite so bad for the past couple of days.
