The main thing I remember about 2004 was the rise of Britpop v2 - the regions fight back, which was based on late 70s new wave, as opposed to the late 60s melodicism of the first wave. I look forward to Britpop v3 in a couple of years ;)

Scissor Sisters - Scissor Sisters = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QonuCFWz2g Shiny, shiny music. Oh how I love them.

College Dropout - Kanye West - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYF7H_fpc-g

JC Chasez - Schizophrenic - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YU0WTJV3m5A One day, I will buy this album.

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gu41oOcfD7Q Would have used the proper video but couldn't find a decent version on Youtube. It's a good example of how they sound different live. I'm still not sure how 4 art school boys from Glasgow made the best disco album of the last 10 years, but there you go.

Anastacia - Anastacia - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iS7YCPKbSvw - Everytime I hear the start of this I think it's 'Bring Me To Life'.

Hopes and Fears - Keane - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oextk-If8HQ Another example of me not just picking the ones I liked, because I loathe Keane in all their Home Counties easy-listening mumsiness.

You Are The Quarry - Morrisey - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKoS5X4SMrY You know how every time there's a new David Bowie album, it's 'a return to form', well this was the Morrisey album that actually was. I love it so much. In fact, you shall also get another track from it, 'First of the Gang To Die' - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wzpynvxr7tA& It's like they suddenly figured out how to deal with his voice. (Also, for those that have read Paris, Manchester, this is the arena in question). I make no bones about this album meaning a lot to me.

A Grand Don't Come For Free - The Streets - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64gvmHKWaWc Couldn't find the proper video. Love it, so hideously truthful about Brits abroad. Also, he made a Brit-hop concept album, which deserves some major praise indeed. My fondness for concept albums will be mentioned again.

Vol 3: Subliminal Verses - Slipknot - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_09wFxoaeQ 'Before I Forget' is actually the only Slipknot song I have on my mp3 player, something I will have to fix. But, as with all their best stuff, it either makes me cry or fills me with a glorious rage. I love them so very much.

Auf der Maur - Melissa Auf der Maur - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2lSa8Bnx_M Even if it wasn't dear sweet Melissa on the wall, I'd love this, bass heavy drone new waviness, female-led band. As it is, I love it especially.

Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge - My Chemical Romance - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rdz6H1S2mJ0 - one of the few MCR songs I like, although I grant that they bring it live.

Up All Night - Razorlight - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nC_8LFj-F4w

Room on the 3rd Floor - McFly - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64mHQc_hdeY Or Busted: the next generation.

The Futureheads - The Futureheads - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfJMqUN0FCE The Northeast had the two best of the new britpop bands, these and Maximo Park. I love this song.

The Libertines - The Libertines - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4SAY2NhE7Y - Oh stupid broken boys. I get into arguments with people about Pete Doherty, because, if he didn't keep screwing his life up, he's a fabulous musician.

Who Killed the Zutons - The Zutons - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIPaAQNcY54

Hot Fuss - The Killers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5fBdpreJiU The other track with gender confusion that isn't 'Boys and Girls'. Also the basis of a fantastic fic by [livejournal.com profile] norah - http://norah.livejournal.com/333126.html

Unwritten - Natasha Bedingfield - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dg_7TL5PAzA

Out of Nothing - Embrace - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wc4CXm63tck Not that it's a bad album, but it was definitely not as good as their previous. I think they went too far towards the middle of the road.

Kasabian - Kasabian - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96eZYS7sm88 Apparently they hate the Happy Mondays/Stone Roses comparissons. Shame that that's what I'm going to do. Awesome baselines with a distinct Madchesteriness.

Flogging Molly - Within A Mile Of Home - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smyQRprA4NQ

American Idiot - Green Day - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh7mLgP7YH4 Did I mention that I love concept albums? And protest songs? And pop-punk? And I liked Green Day anyway? Many squeaky noises have been made over this album. I also discovered that Green Day are one of those bands that I'll go to the wall for, because the number of arguments I got into, because apparently moving in a political direction is them selling out. And people who were complaining about American Idiot fans being bandwagoneers, and me telling them that I remember when people who started with the same album as they did (they were the Nimrod generation, not the Dookie generation) were the noobs.

To me, the best thing I ever heard anyone saying about it was my Mum on the topic, declaring it the best album of protest songs she'd heard for years.

Mind Body and Soul - Joss Stone - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opwudiDgv1E

Lifeblood - Manic Street Preachers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IasojNlG58 Is Lifeblood a pretty terrible album? Probably. Does it, like other Manics albums, have a couple of decent tracks? Why yes. (A live version, as the track I've chosen isn't one of the singles. They're so awesome live.)

Love, Angel, Music, Baby - Gwen Stefani - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdcObAQ5OOM

How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb - U2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98W9QuMq-2k

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7rsrO3kEe4 I've gone with 'Michael', even though there are no bad tracks on this album.

A Grand Don't Come For Free - The Streets - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YE_knamCR9g

Up All Night - Razorlight - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mEHAzzydF0 I've gone with 'Somewhere Else', if only because that's why I bought the album. The other tracks are good, but this, this is special.

American Idiot - Green Day - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNKPYhXmzoE Jesus of Suburbia.

And, because it's my list and I'll do what I want to, Boulevard of Broken Dreams - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tijW_SrCoxs

It was bought for me as a birthday present by the wonderful N.

Lifeblood - Manic Street Preachers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OAYSXGL2BE

Trick Me - Kelis - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zI339U6GS9s Love this, and even prefer it to Milkshake.

Free Me - Emma Bunton - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-RxwN9lJ0A

Orpheus - Ash - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zB6X1h6eGTc Ash once more. I desperately hunted for this when I was making my Britpop list, but couldn't find it.

My Happy Ending - Avril Lavigne - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwf2qt6BJAQ

Dip It Low - Christina Milian - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5z5Mvyp1QHw

Mass Destruction - Faithless - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rl0ieKYsa-E Protest song = love. Faithless = love. The two combined, plus an awesome beat - love to the power 2.

Helena - My Chemical Romance - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSNKCfxcYvE&feature=fvst I don't like the song, but I love the video. MCR infuriate me in this way. I should either like them more or less, and yet I feel wildly conflicted about them.

Golden Touch - Razorlight - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wz2pa_ygtlQ Love this so much.

Dude - Beenie Man w/ Ms. Thing - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sc398mOyzHw

Walk Idiot Walk - The Hives - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shbwokU0Y_c Of course, some of us have been trained to expect scantily clad ladies whenever this gets played.

Hallelujah - k.d. Lang - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Znb3nKwKxLA Still my favourite version of this.

Can't Stand Me Now - The Libertines - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2oTuxXjbO4 I wanted to hate the Libertines because they were Southern indie darlings. And then I heard this, and it hurt. This is every that friend who is destroying themselves and you don't know what to do and they drive you crazy and you hate them, and you love them, and you'll never stop loving them. I've been there and done that, haven't we all, but to have it all there.

These Words - Natasha Bedingfield - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dryiMi9k5Rg I love the word play in this and the cleverness.

Gravity - Embrace - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nr9AcsFlDek

L.S.F. - Kasabian - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sR6HHtoqg_A

1985 - Bowling For Soup - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvAjdDOshbs Am deeply amused that there are 2 songs called 1985 on this list. I love Bowling for Soup in all their childish glory. This is actually quite a sweetly melacholic little song, which I always forget roughly at about the start of the George Michael impression.

American Idiot - Green Day - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkmEZs_Kcms Three minutes and 1 second of glorious anger.

Wonderful Night - Fatboy Slim - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IK7dr2nk5o Palookaville might not be a good album, but this is an absolute cracker of a tune.

The Bucket - Kings of Leon - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnZmWE8JG3M Or when they got rid of the beards and we realised the lead King is actually an elf (seriously, I do not joke).

Just Lose It - Eminem - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dcVOmEQzKA

Lose My Breath - Destiny's Child - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iw8oEB1wWMc I love the video, and, while I'm probably reading too much into it, I like the idea that it's about the struggle between the two things 'girls' are supposed to be 'prim and proper' and 'sexy and up for it', with the final them being Destiny's Child taking control of their lives.

Hollaback Girl - Gwen Stefani - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kgjkth6BRRY

Dragostea din tei - O-Zone - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRx5PrAlUdY Warning, earworm to end all ear worms.

Everybody's Changing - Keane - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zx4Hjq6KwO0

Goodies - Ciara - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIBwQI4UzpA I want her body. Seriously, that's what I'm aiming for (and failing badly, but, you know, it's good to have aims).

Last Train Home - Lostprophets - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjKmCxyKmas

Sick And Tired - Anastasia - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuNonfqK1oA I love the start of this song. (Okay, after this, Mass Desctruction and Faint, we all know that to interest me syncopation and brushes are required [although bodrans also work]).

Mr. Brightside - The Killers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGdGFtwCNBE This song is so many memories. It's me and N clubbing, and her bouncing up to me because it was our song. It's N telling me about her holidays in Canada, because she listened to this album on repeat as she and her family went up a mountain. It's me and [livejournal.com profile] biorhythm talking about Eric Roberts being in every video this year as the creepy old guy (see also Mariah Carey's We Belong Together). It's listening to Jo Wiley during the half hour a day break from first year revision.

My Band - D12 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bd4XHnTDTqc

Pieces of Me - Ashlee Simpson - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJCsyLUCSXI

Take Me Out - Franz Ferdinand - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZGcw9HHOkU

This Love - Maroon 5 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPpTgCho5ZA This is, and will always be, the music of travelling to and from fencing, because Collapsing Dan, giver of lifts and all round awesome dude, used to play the album this is off and Iron Maiden on repeat (before he switched to Iron Maiden and classical).

Superstar - Jamelia - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcLxwmrMhd0 The most awesome comeback of 2004. Cracking tune.

Fuck It (Don't Want You Back) - Eamon - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_v9I8cf5x5M and of course, the reply Fuck You Right Back by Frankee - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1K0pUSSFUo

I Don't Wanna Know - Mario Winans - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fn7PRQon_MA

Radio - Robbie Williams - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciInzaTUzV0

In The Shadows - The Rasmus - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ao2u7F_Qzg P at work has one of their early albums which is, well, I'm not sure what it is but raggae punk seems to be a good description. No idea how you get from that to this.

Leave (Get Out) - JoJo - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aP3yAFmaGzY

Hotel - Cassidy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lWRBZQ8REQ Was there ever any explanation for what R. Kelly is wearing or is he beyond explanation?

Some Girls - Rachel Stevens http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWfVy102T7E When it came out there was a big thing about it sounding so very, very similar to Ooh La La by Goldfrapp - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uco-2V4ytYQ

Take Your Mama Out - Scissor Sisters - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=od7-fyGa9DQ&feature=fvsr

Through The Wire - Kanye West - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvb-1wjAtk4 Or as it was known universally, that song with the chipmunks.

Dry Your Eyes - The Streets - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHOf3s70w-c Beautiful song, this.

5 Colours In Her Hair - McFly - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h76uVRSJ5bc

Hounds of Love - The Futureheads - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IeQyvCl-Rg&feature=related

You Will You Won't - The Zutons - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1-CCWHMsEU

Dance

Call On Me - Eric Prydz - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_fCqg92qks I suspect the video may have had something to do with the popularity of this ;)

Lola's Theme - Shapeshifters - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIC0aQ56ASE

Take Me To The Clouds Above - LMC vs U2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yos4iNlTs4Y

Cha Cha Slide - DJ Caspar - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCEu_dFfw6I

Somebody To Love - Boogie Pimps - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMW6Mw-_UkU I remember when this came out, the video caused such a kerfuffle. I think it's reasonably clever, and I'd rather have this kind of whimsical smut than some of the more obvious ones.

Special Cases

Songs About Jane - Maroon 5 - Released 2002, made it big in 2004 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIjVuRTm-dc
