Back From Sheffield
Apr. 12th, 2010 12:40 pmSpent the weekend in Sheffield, fencing epee for East Midlands region. I return covered in more bruises than glory, but I had a lot of fun.
We did stay in the worst hotel I've ever been in (with the possible exception of the one I stayed with with school on the trip to Germany in year 9), so let me disrecommend the Etap hotel near the EIS in Sheffield. Hotel room was ridiculously poky, no room to put any luggage, and the third bed was a bunk bed over the double that made up the other two beds in the room. The steps up and down to the bunk bed were ridiculously difficult to get up and down. I had to get one of my room mates to act as a spotter when I was coming down. Going up with no lights on, because I'd gone to bed early and there was only one light switch in the room and that was near the door, was no fun either.
That's before we get onto the shower with a whole for a door handle, and where the door was translucent.
There is a reason it only charges ~ £17 per night per night per person.
Other than that, as I said, I was fencing epee, which is always an amusing sort of disaster, although it got a lot better after S gave me a quick less. S is awesome, as is A who was carrying our epee team.
The only team we beat all weekend was Combined Services and they had other problems. They were also absolute darlings which made me feel slightly guilty.
I only won 3 fights out of 21, two against CS, and one against a left hander from the North-West who for reasons unknown was giving people a lot better at epee than me a lot of problems. Possibly because she was an awkward leftie who attacked through octave, which is a dashed odd think to do.
But I had a lot of fun, met some shiny new people, got to klatch with some old friends.
Most of the bruises came from Yorkshire, who I have yet to forgive for hurting my teammate S. They were aiming for pain, not for points. The top of my right arm is two massive bruises and I think they may have actually broken the CS captain, which as she's from an Armed Service takes some doing.
But yes, fun and not much sleep was had by all.
