Star Trek Enterprise Character Rant

This is a rant, a rather Reed-centric rant just for the purposes of warning.
It's about the whole Ensign Tutti-Frutti thing. (Not my words, someone elses) One, am I the only person who believes that Star Trek will have a gay character roughly when the Pope says condoms are okay?
2) Why is Reed always Enisgn Tutti, or rather Lieutenant Fruity? My problem isn't with him turning out to be thus, but rather the way everyone presumes it will be him just because he's repressed and prissy.
Now my problems with that are also twofold, one I wouldn't say he was repressed, just prefers to do his own thing. Now me and my best friends are all like that, we love each other dearly, but we like time, space, and being alone. This does not make us repressed.
Secondly, he's not prissy, he really isn't. Again, not compared to my male friends.
Why do I keep coming back to said friends. Mainly because they're British and while not coming from a naval background (The bits with Reed's father were very well done, even if it was Lieutenant Gruber without his little tank - random 'Allo 'Allo reference been and gone), they're rather like Reed in the whole highly intelligent, sarky and snappy way. And all this makes them is normal, not automatically gay, straight or anywhere in between.
Reed's British, we tend to be more reserved and slightly more prissy, get over it.

Been meaning to get that off my chest for quite a while.
