Help! Fic expanding!
Apr. 15th, 2009 02:58 amI thought the blighter was finished but it seems to have other ideas. It's slightly vexing because the fic in question is the one I've always called 'Not Guildenstern and Rozencrantz are Dead'. Mostly because there is no metaphysics in it, although it's kind of inspired by it.
Beyond the giggles, and the tragedy, and indeed the metaphysics, what I liked about it was the idea of taking two side parts and thrusting them centre stage, with the main play, as it were, of Hamlet occasionally intruding on their story. Or lack thereof, but that's where the metaphysics starts coming in.
And I always want to write that kind of thing. In many ways, a lot of what I write is that, it's "showing" the things we don't get to see, but normally all the main characters are also the main characters of their own story, which is the opposite of R&G, and a difficult problem to write around, because how is the fic going to move forward without the characters being intimately involved with why it's going forward.
Then AMW break up, and we get a scenario where Petey Williams and Gail Kim (versus James Storm and the real Jackie) are the main fighters in someone else's story. And I'm like, 'bingo'. Because we never got to hear most of their story - we get a little of Gail's in the interview with Tenay, but nothing about Petey, not that we ever got any reason why Mr. Oh Canada was helping AMW (quite often his main rivals) defend the American way - and the Storm v Harris drama was always the main story.
So, I have the perfect setting. And there's a window where I can, sensibly, write a story where the main plot is Storm v Harris, while focussing entirely on Petey and Gail. Both Storm and Harris keep threatening to make appearances but don't, so the parallel doesn't quite work, but, because of the way the actual angle played out, I have a perfectly good reason for Gail and Petey to be unable to move the plot forward themselves.
I am still filled with glee over that angle.
Admittedly, I think this makes Harris Hamlet, but given that he spends the entire fic not speaking to anyone and justifiably moping, it's not the worst comparison. And both Storm and Claudius like to drink.
The fic still has issues - it appears to be set in some sort of badly described kayfabe world where everyone lives in Orlando within walking distance of each other, and I need more Gail in it - but so far, so good.
I could do with a quick slang check, if anyone on my f-list would be so kind. Is there a US or, even better, Canadian equivalent of the phrase 'to bottle someone', as in to smash a bottle and cut them?
