I have a new suggestion for Gambit - Josh Stewart - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1577637/ No, he's not pretty but he can do Southern and scruffy and is suitably thus that it might put the fangirls off.
Also, have seen photos of James Marsters on Torchwood, and the outfit is far too cavalry officer for it to be any good for my dignity. There will be dolphin noises.

Not in the sex, death and violence department but because the heroes don't win, they cause death, destruction and misery and it doesn't hide that. And they're not particularly nice people but they're real.
Admittedly when it's bad, it's awful, but it's worth it.
Then again I'm one of three people willing to admit to being Torchwood fans in public.

While I agree (though I may be overly un-critical because there was not an episode I outright hated - though there are a few saved only by having one or two scenes I like), it's difficult. I tend to recommend it anyway though, if pushed in the rec/not rec direction.
