Doctor Who was deeply cool. Not as scary as some would suggest, but that is, I think because it didn't set off any of my fear triggers (see this post for details - http://redfiona99.livejournal.com/329972.html#cutid1)
I felt so sorry for Toby because I think he knew what was happening when the Beast was possessing him. Those were pretty damn cool effects used too. The way he was constantly scrabbling at his hands when he went back to normal. Poor man. I think the bit before the first scene where he gets taken over was probably the scariest bit of the episdoe. He does reinforce an important point though, in the Doctor Who universe, it does not pay to be an academic, you either get brainwashed, are the entry point for the unspeakable evil du plot or both. Although seriously, Toby, scrawling "Welcome to Hell" on the walls might have been a bit much, because it was obviously either him, Danny or the previous Captain, because someone had to have gone mad and my money is on it being either Toby having a mini-breakdown or the ex-Captain, who might not have died exactly as explained, and they've hushed it up so his widow can get benefits.
I did like all the miscellaneous human crew, because they were interesting and quickly differentiated. I did like the science officer especially, because she was a nerd, of the highest/lowest water. And the acting Captain, who worried so much about being a useless leader, seriously, he was racking up points on the character most likely to make heroic and noble sacrifice (which I hate). The actor is also fantastic and will undoubtedly bring it for his death scene. I really don't like it when characters I like get killed, and I worry about all of this lot.
Because I liked Toby and Scooti, who did have the coolest name ever, only occasionally wanted to smack Danny upside the head, adored the Science officer and the acting Captain. I was a bit worried about the Security officer, because on this show, military or semi-military is quite often bad, but he wasn't. And his speech when Scooti was found was kind of stunning.
I did find it quite interesting that the 'Ethics Officer' was basically the slave master. The minute he said 'oh the Ood like serving us, and they're kind of dumb and stupid' I was awaiting Ood based smackdown. Because the Doctor and Rose do not approve.
The Ood were also really interesting, because you weren't ever entirely certain if they were docile herd type creatures, just plain kind spirited and helping out the idiot apes for some other reason and were merely being used or if they'd submitted to this so that they could get their lord and master out of the ground.
I liked how nice they were and the way that there'd be the occasionally inappropriate 'He is risen' type comment. It was a good dichotemy.
I liked the seal on the tomb of the Beast, it was pleasently ornate.
So, in short (because what's under that cut is seriously long), I liked this episodes guest Humans a lot, and I worry about them. And the Ood, I was very fond of the Ood.
CSI: New York "The Supermen" (Season 2, episode 19) was also stonkingly good.
Especially given that CSI, particularly Miami, goes on and on about the ideal of police work, this is one that showed it. That and whoever wrote it is both a comic book geek and has a twisted sense of humour.
I also like how, despite the B-plot person being a famous athlete, A-plot guy got all the positive attention. I also really liked the montage at the end.
Daredevil
Was not as bad as expected. I mean seriously, what did Ben Affleck do to annoy the critics that much that they panned this for no good reason. Although Daredevil, the character, reminded me why I like Batman, I like my costumed freaks to be actual freaks when they're out of costume, Matt Murdock is unnervingly normal.
I really liked Joe Pantaliano's character, yay for investigative journalists.
Bullseye reminded me oddly of the Kurgan, in the way he really did live for killing and chaos and all the bad things. And Kingpin was the same, evil through and through (although I willing to put money on Welsey being the journalist's inside source. Interesting casting though, given what the Kingpin looks like in the comics. But that's because Michael Clarke Duncan is fabulous and therefore should be cast in everything.
As to my filthy housemate, she is officially never allowed to complain about my mess again, given that she left a used sanitary towel (in a bag thankfully) in the bathroom. Seriously, she complains, I will bitch back this time.

Date: 2006-06-10 12:43 pm (UTC)Oh, out of curiosity, did you see the original or the director's cut? Because the director's cut took out the sex scene which was my favourite scene.
And yay, Joe Pantoliano period, he's one of the great character actors and he was really good in this.
