It's the little touches I love about this episode with the crew playing basketball, and River being all 'wow' about being outside in the space suit while Simon's all 'don't look down, don't freak out, don't panic, aaah!'
The crew being interogated is one of the most fantastic scenes because they're all so them. And don't ever call Serenity names while Kaylee's within earshot. She's so cute when she's angry.
And of course there's the über-Mal quote, "May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one."
I think he, much like Reaver kid, is stuck, and in his case it's Serenity Valley where everything he held dear got crushed. But I think he kind of knows that. Which is one of the things that makes him interesting.
The other thing I love about the interogation scene is that you can see the Alliance officer getting more and more peeved as the interviews continue.
Again with the portrayal of most of the Alliancers as being normal, ordinary folk, if a bit too by the book.
I loved the show not tell of how scary the Reavers are by both what Mal says, everyone else's reactions and the fact that Jayne is terrified of them.
I swear if Mal had had the opportunity he would have put a bullet through the kid's head. Which is another part of what makes him him, that he doesn't shirk from doing the things that are for everyone's good but not pleasant. Plus by now, three programmes in, he doesn't seem to be quite as abrasive. Not sure if it's because I've got used to it or if he's settled down.
I don't get why people seem to think that the two Reaver origin stories totally don't work with each other. Think about it logically:
1 - the Pax gas is released on a little means nothing planet out on the rim. While most of the folks get real restful and die, some are driven mad and hyperaggressive by it.
2 - Travellers between the various planets start going missing.
3 - Other travellers, who don't get attacked, report finding damaged ships with horribly killed people on board.
4 - Someone with a deep and scary knowledge of Scottish history calls the possible attackers Reavers, like the roaming clans of the borderlands between England and Scotland including the Bean family who killed and ate people.
5 - The Reavers start getting more aggressive and making planet fall. People see them and survive by running like woah. Stories start to spread.
To me, the two origin stories fit together perfectly.
I also knew there was a thing I should have said about The Train Job. The terrifying Space Monkeys quote still rocks.
