Film rec - All the Queen's Men

Deeply silly WWII comedy featuring Eddie Izzard. And Matt Le Blanc in drag - he doesn't make a bad looking woman (http://www.imdb.com/gallery/ss/0252223/Ss/0252223/qm1024_03.jpg?path=gallery&path_key=0252223)

The basic plot is that a small unit have to go steal an Enigma machine from an all women factory and therefore Eddie Izzard's character has to get them all to look like women.

Sounds silly but normal. Well it would be. Except they don't dwell on it. They go to different places with it.

Other things - they have Germans playing Germans. And I can understand them. And despite the setting the Germans aren't all evil. Even the soldiers aren't automatically evil.

They even go to different places with the people growing and changing. Well kind of. Eddie Izzard's character doesn't do much growing but you know, he does get to be an action transvestite - http://www.imdb.com/gallery/ss/0252223/Ss/0252223/qm1024_04.jpg?path=gallery&path_key=0252223

And also gets to be the coolest one of the lot of them.

And the nerd (for there is always a nerd) gets to be heroic without losing his nerdity.

And James Cosmo just wins forever in this one. His character at the start is this pen-pushing berk even while he's still like that they give his character light and shade. And then later on, well I just fall in love.

I mean, I think Matt Le Blanc, who's the leading man probably gets the shortest shrift because, his character doesn't change and doesn't get to be quite as cool as the others. And then he does dumb things he's told the others not to do which gets them all in trouble.

Don't even get me started on them pulling this fantastic switch because they have this traditional WWII film German, you know, stubble, mean looking (looks like he'd kick Dachshunds) [A stereotype that I'll never forgive Saving Private Ryan for using], the usual. And he's being really mean to two of our boys.

But then he turns out to be one of the good guys.

And the entry into Berlin and the air raid sequences are good because you've got the characters going "what the fuck are we doing to these people, who, if you ignore the whole we're at war with them thing, are exactly like us'.

So yes, very silly, light fluffy WWII drag-comedy that I love to pieces.

And it has Udo Kier in it.

If you get the chance to see it, do. I mean, it's not the best film ever, but it doesn't try to be and it's cute and lovely, and good-hearted, if that makes sense.
