Actually started last week.

Basically, there was an inexplicable sample failure in the NMR machine (and I mean legit. inexplicable), then the person running the experiment for me stopped it so C took my NMR time. I've no problem with any of that, because NMR time is too precious to waste on bad samples, except, it turned out that the problem was restricted to only one of the three samples and I could have run the other two, no problems.

I then had to prove that the inexplicable sample failure wasn't my fault, which I did.

I couldn't get my time back off C (not his fault, no NMR bod is going to give away NMR time voluntarily). Finally, when I got more NMR time, the transformer substation next to the NMR building blew due to the 35oC heat. Again, I am being horribly literal. The UK energy grid was not built for + 30oC temperatures.

Thankfully, I got on the machine by Friday and had been sensible enough to book extra time just in case. Paranoia FTW part 1.

Meanwhile, I was going to use the SPR machine to get orthagonal technique data. Guess which machine also broke?

It took three days to get the SPR machine fixed (and the data is inexplicable but I'm putting that down to sample issues not the machine).

Meanwhile, I had agreed to do a fencing competition. The original team organiser, D, (yes that D) either left or was sacked, depending on whose version you heard. Poor P got lumbered. So I emailed P asking for the competition details, like where and when and got a blank, will get back to you Wednesday response. Wednesday came and went in silence. Thankfully, my fencing club meets on Thursday, so I talk to different D (has same name as previous D, just to confuse matters) who phones P who promises to get back to us by Friday.

Thursday midnight, I get an e-mail saying my weapon team has been cancelled. Despite knowing the when and the where I hadn't bought train tickets and a hotel room, because I know how this goes. So paranoia FTW 2.

I had been tempted to pull a sickie anyway, which I've never felt about a fencing competition before, but I suspected it would be hellish and my back still isn't right. Long story short, I twisted wrong and have done something to my erector spinae. I've done it before and it's annoying more than anything, because it's not painful 9/10ths of the time, and the remaining tenth, it's not painful just sore. Of course, because it's a stabiliser muscle, the things it really doesn't like are deadlifts and squats so I'm going through technique runs with that, which is annoying because progress was being made.

Despite that, I feel quite good because I had a thorough sunbathe today and sun + beer makes everything better.

(I could have answered this question and the next the other way round.)

I'd be happy to see a Star Trek show on tv.

It's not just that it's been 10 years since the last one, it's also that Enterprise felt strangely retrograde for a Star Trek show, because it was the first set during a time before the previous show, and it's was curiously reactionary in its views (see also Archer threatening to space someone out of an airlock, which is behaviour unbecoming a Starfleet captain).

We've come ahead in science and I want to see how people want to write Star Trek now, even if I'm worried the present trend for grim dark will lead to bad things. (I am pro-grim dark in the right places, Star Trek is not the right place.)

It struck me while I was watching 'Into Darkness' that I wanted the ethical dilemmas behind McCoy defrosting Khan's people, and the pleading for Khan's blood to save Kirk, and the diplomacy over what to do with Khan's people (and the fact that Khan actually won 'Into Darkness', that little detail seems to have escaped JJ Abrams et al.). I wanted all the things the film didn't have time to do (or didn't want to cover).
