Aug. 30th, 2005 03:11 pmSpent most of yesterday watching Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers. Would have watched Return of the King but there was a Trafalgar thing I wanted to watch and after that finished it was way too late to start watching ROTK.
Added thoughts having watched the films yet again: Orlando Bloom really doesn't do a bad job as Legolas, especially after Gandalf falls he's all 'well this is strange and new, and very, very bad'.
I love Gimli so very, very much. And casting Cate Blanchett was a great move.
I still say that Haldir's death is the best shot of all three films. Because all the other deaths are grand and dramatic and glorious while his is very 'this is a bad thing, stuff glory and whatnot'.
Mostly watching to try and expunge mad crying jag that I'd been on since watching the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. They were doing a Nelson thing and I just went into floods. Very, very odd. I know why, it was the whole 'thank God, I have done my duty' thing while dying. Then again he was a man who made jokes about Collingswood (?) only becoming fleet commander over his dead body at the same time.
I think they were all a bit stark, staring bonkers brave at that time though. During the Battle of the Nile, one of the French captains had his legs removed by a canonball shot and was bleeding to death, so he ordered his men to get the bran tub, stick him in and continued to order his ship about.
The Trafalgar thing was a docudrama about the Victory's ship surgeon. Was quite good too.
Onto other, non-nautical matters, happy birthday, Lossi. As promised here are some paragraphs of demented fic.
