BEG, BORROW, STEAL, EVEN RING UP AND ANNOY YOUR TELEVISION PROVIDER, JUST MAKE SURE YOU GET TO WATCH THE MEN'S HIGH BAR FINAL.
YOU WILL SEE SOMETHING THAT IS BOTH FUN, IN THE VAGUELY BAD WAY, AND UNUSUAL.
Oh and the caps. Totally warranted.
Okay, so Morgan Hamm does his routine, and it's good.
Then Nemov does his routine, and it's brilliant. Not just in the releases but in the whole package.
The judges, who I think it has been proved by now are idiots, don't put him in first. They don't even put him in second. They put him in third.
The crowd do not like this. They really don't. So they start booing. And then they boo some more. Then some of them start doing the thumbs down. And then, they stand up and do all of this. And they will not stop.
The judges, realising that you do not want to piss off the Athenian crowd, put Nemov's marks up. Not enough to move him up any places but enough to make the marks look vaguely decent. This does not stop the crowd.
Paul Hamm comes out and has to step back down from the apparatus because the crowd are not stopping. Nemov asks them to be quiet, and they comply.
Paul Hamm does his routine and it's good. From what little I know the two routines are similarly difficult and equally well executed, plus Hamm lands his exit better. Personally I think Nemov's was carried off better, but that's where subjectivity comes in to it. Plus Nemov didn't have to cope with the crazy before his routine.
Meanwhile back at home, my mother is throwing one of those book brochures. She is not happy.
Anyway, out comes an Italian whose name I didn't catch. He does a routine that wins. I, Mother and the crowd are happy with this.
The results table, when shown at the end makes less happy viewing. Nemov finished in 5th. Personally, I would have put him ahead of Morgan Hamm because his programme, to my very untrained eye, was better excuted and more difficult.
I have no idea where I would put Nemov in comparison to Paul Hamm. I'm pretty certain the Italian's routine was better. I feel sorry for both of them, especially the Italian, because their achievements will be lost in the kerfuffle.
Meanwhile in slightly happier news, but still the fault of the judges, the American Olympic people are willing to have a second gold medal given to the Korean that came second when he shouldn't have done. The only problem is convincing the IOC.
Steve Cram and Brendan Foster commentating on the athletics get even more brownie points. Cram for saying that it all comes down to the day and some of the greatest athletes have never won an Olympic gold. Which sounds kind of obvious but should get stated more often.
And Brendan Foster for saying, while all were wailing about Paula Radcliffe, that the Japanese lady who won ran an amazing, brilliant, incredibly-hard-on-her race and that shouldn't be forgotten.
Oh and in the least important bit of news, I've finished the Randy and Chris Benoit gen fic based on last week's RAW. It's called 'Gold Fever' and is to be found here about -http://disc.server.com/discussion.cgi?disc=200258;article=513;title=JAWS%20-%20Just%20Another%20Wrestling%20Storyboard
- and it features fear, paranoia and the belt having much the same effect on people as the One Ring.

Date: 2004-08-23 03:05 pm (UTC)But T______________________T at Nemov not medalling. This makes me very sad. I'm STILL very, very upset over Svetlana's fall from the uneven bars. *sniffle* I swear, the gymnastics judges are all on $3 crack. Boooooooo. I'm glad that the Americans have enough grace to say okay for the second gold medal. Stupid IOC better agree.

Date: 2004-08-23 05:40 pm (UTC)I'm going to say you're right. Unfortunately the only thing I remember about Atlanta as far as gymnastics goes is the womens, the rings and that the high bar winner was German.

Date: 2004-08-23 05:46 pm (UTC)I also remember Vitaly Scherbo being an ass about his all-around placement. It was Nemov, Xiaoshuang, and Scherbo on the podium.
I think it's permanently burned in my brain. Heh.
