Is any actual occupation ever given for Bootstrap Bill in POTC? (Okay so I finally secumbed and have written POTC fic. In my defence however, it's gen Bootstrap Bill and Will's Mother)

Edit: A-ha, I've got it. It's going to take a little re-writing but...

From the script:Jack : I knew ‘im. Probably one the few who knew him as William Turner . Everyone else just called him Bootstrap or Bootstrap Bill.

Will: Bootstrap?

Jack : Good man. Good pirate. I swear you look just like him.

Will : It’s not true. He was a merchant sailor. A good, respectable man who obeyed the law.

Doesn't piracy usually take up a lot of time? That's all I can remember. He probably could have worked a job as a legit sailor on a merchant ship, since it's doubtful he'd have sailed for the Royal Navy, and oh dear I'm thinking far too much about this. Woot for POTC fic :)

There's a line in the film just after Captain Jack tells Will that his father was a pirate and will says, "My father was no pirate, he was a....." and I can't remember what was said next. It might have been good, honest sailor but for the sake of fic I'm hoping it was something else. Or else re-writes and expansion will be needed.

I've always took that line to mean that's what Will's mother told her son his father was and he believed her. Either there was shame in admitting his father was a pirate, or they didn't want word to get around.

Devil's advocates are always welcomed around here.

I've no doubt that Will got the information from his mother. It's just how she got hers. I mean I can see your interpretation being correct and it being some sort of secret. I have to admit my interpretation is that Bootstrap lied to Will's mother and said he was just an ordinary merchant sailor because he was ashamed of being a pirate.

But I suppose interpreting little scene like that is where fanfic comes in ;)
