So I was almost done with the next in the 'Kisses' series, when I started thinking that paternity test results take time to come through, so there is massive re-writing going on.

So I was wondering if anyone, particularly you Becky since you're the biologist, how long they do take and what the science is behind them.

And in a similar vein of I want to know, what does 'viva la rassa' mean? And did I even spell it half-way right?

I think its raza and I did see an explanation in a movie once that I can almost remember but can't. *g* And yeah this was a pointless reply *giggle*

Not pointless, you contributed the proper spelling. :)

Paternity testing basically involves comparing the dna of a child to the dna to the suspected father. Geneticists can tell by the degree of similarity whether or not the two samples are father/child, closely related, or not related at all.

The DNA can be taken from blood or semen but now due to more accurate replication techniques you can get a workable sample just from a mouth swab.

The one site I went to said that results can be expected in 5 working days, so I guess that's a decent estimate. However, if you google search there are actually paternity kits you can buy for home use, and that some advertise "court-acceptable" results. o.O I have no idea what's up with that, but it doesn't seem reliable to me.

Thanks for the info. I used the mouth swab idea. And five days is perfect for the fic.

Re: The home use kits - I fear the only court they'd be acceptable in would be Judge Judy :)

the more the merrier and all that :)

That helps lots because 'long live the family' would make sense. Thanks.
