Since Wimbledon is almost upon us, as in it starts tomorrow, I thought I might mention a few things,
Okay who I'm cheering for first -
For purely tennis reasons - Juan Carlos Ferrero, because I love the way he plays tennis.
For 'he's fun' reasons - Andy Roddick. Because he is. He's a little (or rather tall) sweetheart.
And as my dark horse just in case - Sebastian Grosjean.
Actually Grosjean is the only time in the history of any sport ever (other than Rugby, and that's a special case) where the entire family is cheering for one person/team.
First round matches which upset me because I like both players -
Max Mirnyi v Vince Spadea, Arvind Palmer v Sjeng Schalken (okay, the only Brit (who isn't Canadian) that I like against the man who deserves to win something for sheer effort, so not fair), Vladimir Voltchkov v David Nalbandian (cute furry Belarussian v cute furry Argentinian, more on why tomorrow probably), Sebastian Grosjean v Thomas Enqvist (I like both because of the way they play tennis and the way they conduct themselves so again, not fair), Yevgeny Kafelnikov v Raymond Sluiter.
And as usual, Tim Henman gets a supposedly easy draw in the first round. Bah!
It's quite odd, Pete Sampras is hanging up his tennis racket and Richard Kraijek is as well. And I can remember them winning the championship. And it makes me sad to see them go, but I can understand that they only wanted to carry on if they were winning.
But yes, with them and Michael Chang giving up, the only tennis player from my youth that's still going is Andre Agassi. Quite scary really.
But best wishes to them and thanks for the memories.
