The trailers before Black Panther
Apr. 4th, 2018 10:26 pmIn ascending order of horror:
Ready Player One
Tye Sheridan has been awful in the one film I saw him in, and in that one, he didn't have to act through CGI. I ... suspect I will not be watching this.
Also, the big speech in the trailer made me realise that the ending is part of the reason why Escape from New York still stands out so much even now.
Love Simon
Like, I totally get the people who are all "yay, mainstream high school gay flick without the depressing bits". I really do.
It's just ... the high school bits don't ring true because even if we ignore that the actors look mid-twenties rather than mid-teens, am I actually supposed to believe that the entire school doesn't have a single outish gay person? I mean, I grant, my friends are undoubtedly outliers of some sort, but most of us were relatively out by 16, and it's not like my home town is some liberal oasis (my home town is "do your thing, do it hard, someone kicks you, you kick 'em back, harder").
Also, you know, there have been gay teen comedies before and I feel uncomfortable that that cultural past is being swept under the rug. Especially for a film that feels, very much, like it's saying "the white picket fences can be yours too", when some of us have never wanted that.

Which did not look as good as I wanted it to look. But that is not the problem.
The problem is that I have this horrible feeling in my bones that they're going to kill Thor off and ... I am attached to Thor, I do not wish to see him dead. And when I say this Marvel, I mean it.
Friend L suggested that Loki is going to become "sir no longer appearing in these films because I have been killed off for real", because we see him with the tesseract and then we see Thanos with the tesseract and there is a flash of Thor having to watch something ... horrible.
Loki dying is not much better than Thor dying IMO. I am not as attached to Loki as other people are, but it will hurt Thor. And that which hurts him hurts me.
Quirky Ill Girl film du annee (someone with actual French will have to correct that)
No, I have no idea what it's actually called. They have long since mushed into one giant quirky ill-girl film for me.
What I do remember is sitting there, looking at the male lead going, "he looks ... familiar." My brain got as far as vaguely like Harry Connick jnr. So I wait for the short cast list to appear, as happens at the end of trailers. And I see the name. And it's Patrick Schwarzenegger. My brain goes, "nah, it can't be." Except it has to be, because if you weren't related, but you were an actor, you'd change your name (it's not so rare a name that there's not several others out there). So offspring of Arnie is old enough to be acting and is ... unnervingly non-Schwarzenegger-shaped. I think he's got lucky and got his looks from his mother.
Entebbe
Or, oh dear Lord, Hollywood, Hollywood right now, is making a film about the Entebbe hostage crisis. I mean, what could go wrong!
(Daniel Bruhl, why do you keep ending up in films like this? And why is Eddie Marsan playing Shimon Peres?)
