Yeah, that was ribbing you were doing - it's definitely smoother in the second piece. When they want you to do that effect deliberately, the pattern will say BLO or FLO, which stands for back loop only (or front loop.)
But yay, crochet! They look good, both squares. And it's good to start with a pale colour, because it's easier to see where to put your hook.
Are they your first squares? You should definitely keep them and look back on them later - you'll get a kick out of seeing how much your technique and familiarity has changed.
There's a series of knitting magazines in the UK written by the same company and they released a crochet set too so I collected both. I should have guessed that their crochet instructions would be terrible because their knitting ones were, but at least with knitting I knew what I was doing and had people to ask because all the women in the family knit like Tricoteusses.
This is square 13 but I am getting better, slowly :)
