Wrote this once already, LJ swallowed it. But that is probably a good thing since it was overly long and rambling. So this is the shorter, better version.

Final score at the end of normal time = 0 - 0
At the end of 30 minutes extra time = 0-0
After penalties, AC Milan won 3 - 1.

Although AC Milan were by far the better team and deserved to win, I think penalties are a stupid way of deciding matches.

The referee had a good game. Let the game flow and didn't whistle at every single little thing. Therefore the little things didn't grow into big problems. Markus Merk is hereby officially inducted into the list of referees I think are good.

The ref would have had a hard time whistling at everything though, the tackles kept crunching in. The game itself was tough but fair. No unnescessary violence.

Players who had good matches - For Juventus - Paolo Montero, Gianluigi Buffon, Ciro Ferrara, Antonio Conte, Edgar Davids.
For AC Milan - Gattuso who looks a lot like Rhyno, Andrei Schevchenko, Clarence Seedorf and Nelson Dida.

Dida and Buffon, the goalies, get extra special mention. I take back every mean thing I've ever said about Buffon.

Trezeguet's lack of contribution didn't even use enough effort to be called a nightmare.
Del Piero had a nightmare. But that was because it was a big game, and he always has bad games when it matters.

To sum up Juventus - Defence were good, mid-field tried their damnedest, forwards were abysmal.

It just wasn't going to be Juve's night though. Best player, out suspended. Best player on the night, has to come off injured.

Add to that that Milan were playing in their lucky white strip that they've worn every other time they've won, that it's fourty years since Ceasare Maldini, father of the present captain lifted the cup at Wembley, and that Clarence Seedorf was out to make history as the first player to win it with 3 different clubs and you'll see that fate was against Juve even before it went to penalties.

Have I mentioned that Dida, Milan's goalie, is an expert on penalties?

But AC Milan did deserve it, and I don't think I could have coped with seeing Maldini lose another game on penalties/extra time.

BTW what's the betting Paolo Maldini bleeds red and black? (FYI, the traditional Milan colours are red and black)

He is the very definition of a one-team man. Born in Milan, Dad played for them, signed with the team age 10, made his professional debut 24 days after I was born. He's been playing for them almost as long as I've been alive. He was playing for them when their present manager was still playing for them.

Oh they're a dying breed, but when you've got them, treasure them.

Best moments - Buffon and Maldini chatting as the teams walked out on to the pitch.

Seedorf and Davids hugging during the traditional pre-match handshakes. They're the best of friends, they've just ended up on opposite sides.

Tachinardi and Gattuso knocking each other over, and Gattuso helping him out.

Dida and Trezugeut shaking hands after the first penalty.

That was the match report.

The commentators were idiots, complaining that both teams are defensively minded, saying that the Italian league had fewer goals on average than the others.

Guess what, I like this style, and your beloved attacking teams (Man Utd and Real Madrid) both failed to make it to the final because they had no defense to speak of.

Also, Dear Ron Atkinson, if you're going to claim to know about football, don't call Juventus's defensive style untidiness.

Actually think the Juventus defence ought to take the following as its motto - "We lie, we cheat, we make bone crunching tackles."

Ay, ay some of the tackles really were rough.

And say what you want about Man U, they keep a good pitch.
