1) Was 2016 a good year for you?

No. In fact, if we ignore January - March 2016, I can honestly say that April 2016 - end of March 2017 was the worst year of my life. On the other hand, if that's the worst, I really can't complain about my life so far.

First author on a Nature Comms paper, damn it.

Too many to mention.

Watching auld lang syne on Jools as normal. It must be said Mum was fonder of Christine and the Queens than she normally is of things on Jools.

Not really, but there were extingent circumstances. My lab book was kept up to date though.

Same as last year - continuing improvement on the tidying front.

January was alright. December wasn't too bad.

Yes, sort of. Still angry about it.

General human contact. I am not cut out for working in silent places.

Kubo and the Two Strings. Heartily recommended.

I completely missed almost all the music released in 2016. Human by Rag'n'Bone Man is excellent though - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3wKzyIN1yk It's actually better in the live version.

No. In between being a social drinker more than anything else, and the rattlies, I didn't have much opportunity.

I really shouldn't have lost my temper with [name redacted] even if he deserved it.

31) What was the worst lie someone told you in 2016?

While I was job hunting there was the woman working for the company that tried to make job-seekers more employable insisted that a job she suggested for me was a science job when it was a telesales job. Thankfully I'd got the Newcastle job by then so I could turn it down without it being a thing.

I don't think so. My boss may disagree.

34) How much money did you spend in 2016?

Having no time for a personal life (or fencing) meant I spent a lot less than I thought I did, even with far too much Costa coffee and Subway sandwiches.

Good result at the Birmingham and first author on a Nature Comms paper.

36) If you could go back in time to any moment of 2016 and change something, what would it be?

Saying yes to the Newcastle job. Seriously.

37) What are your plans for 2017?

Get a job. Get a bodyweight deadlift.

8 big fics plus 4 comment_fic ficlets (2 of which are quite long), which is less than intended but a goodly number considering.

I had hoped to get Becoming finished before X-Men: Apocalypse came out but que sera and all that.



My favourite story this year: I love Fifty Years Ago And Yesterday slightly too much.

My best story this year: Going off other people's comments, people thought We Need A Better Plan B really worked. Which is pleasing.

Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: I really can't complain, I got good feedback on most of them :)

Most fun story: Both Fifty Years Ago and Yesterday and We Need A Better Plan B are fun.

Most sexy story: There is once again a distinct lack of sexy.

Story with single sexiest moment: Sadly inapplicable.

Hardest story to write: The 3 Becoming fics. It was a mixture of wanting them to be right and them being hard topic matters.

"Holy crap, that's *wrong*, even for you" story: I have been good. The suggestion of cybertronic mind-wiping is canonical in Too Human. I merely ... developed it more fully than the game did.

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: The various parts of Becoming. Which is the same answer as last year ;)

Biggest disappointment: Restraint. There's this bit where there's supposed to be tension and it just isn't there where it should be.

Biggest surprise: The response to 'Resurrection Men'. Seriously, short gen fic about NPCs in a game that was a legendary failure. I was expecting zip, and what I got was lovely, detailed feedback. So warming to the cockles of my deep, dark, writerly heart.

Most unintentionally telling story: None of them are telling. It's one of the things I did well, there is very little of me (in the bad way) in any of the 2016 stories.
