While my Mum did get a Horrible Histories boxset for Christmas, these are ones I already owned. It turns out that when I'm coughing and spluttering due to a Christmas cold, Horrible Histories are my comfort reads.

Horrible Histories: Angry Aztecs

Which could (and probably should) be called Angry Aztecs and Malicious Maya since it covers both cultures. A good primer and definitely worth reading.

The Frightful First World War by Terry Deary
Fatal Forces by Nick Arnold
Violent Volcanoes (Horrible Geography) by Anita Ganeri
Vicious Circles and Other Savage Shapes by Kjartan Poskitt
Awesome Ancient Ancestors by Elizabeth Levy
Al Capone and His Gang (Famous Dead People) by Alan MacDonald
Same series: Alexander the Great and His Claim to Fame by Phil Robins, Writers and Their Tall Tales by Tracey Turner, Elvis and His Pelvis by Michael Cox — 2 more (Dead Famous)
The Gobsmacking Galaxy by Kjartan Poskitt
Eyewitness Books: Aztec, Inca & Maya by Elizabeth Baquedano
Step Into the ... Aztec and Maya World by Fiona Macdonald

I have read, if not the exact recommendations, then certainly other works in the same series.

Horrible Histories: The Cut-Throat Celts

This is actually my least favourite of the Horrible History books (you'll notice that it's still 3 stars despite that, there are no bad Horrible History books). I think that's because some of the stories are repeated, more than once, within the book. I'm not sure if that's because the Celts left so little record of themselves. It does have some fantastic illustrations though.

Bolded the one's I've read.

The Angry Aztecs by Terry Deary
Space, Stars and Slimy Aliens by Nick Arnold
The Gobsmacking Galaxy by Kjartan Poskitt
Stormy Weather (Horrible Geography) by Anita Ganeri
Murderous Maths by Kjartan Poskitt
The Celts (See Through History) by Hazel Mary Martell
The Roman Record by Paul Dowswell
Top Ten Shakespeare Stories by Terry Deary
Celtic Fashions by Tom Tierney
The Very Bloody History of Britain (Without the Boring Bits) by John Farman

Read two, and read others in the same series for several of the others.
