redfiona99Got my first competition of the fencing year (we run on the school year) out of the way. Finished 10th out of 16, which gets me points, even if not many (although, on looking it up, it turns out that 15th in the country was at the comp so I might get more points than I expected*).
I had a plan, I executed it and the usual sports cliches. I bent my back leg, mostly managed to keep my back sort of straight, only attacked once I wanted to attack but was aggressive. I only lost to people significantly better than me (and one team-mate :( I dislike losing to team-mates. Even if she is better than me.). I could maybe have gained a few hits here or there more, but nothing that would have improved my position.
I even beat the team-mate that eventually knocked me in the second round of pools. She isn't that much better than me, and I got lucky with a couple of hits. You can't get lucky to 15 so she won that, but I think I know how to beat her to 15 next time. I just have to hope we don't get a fancy score box next time - she stands really close to the left side of the piste (from my point of view), she doesn't know how to deal with opponents that join her on that side. Her other coach, who I don't like, is an epee coach and it shows. Like I said, I can beat her to 5. The problem was that, in the match to 15, I kept catching the fancy box as I was trying to hit her, which really threw me off.
I don't feel too bad, since I got two difficult pools, as can be seen by having had 3 of the top 4 in my pools.
And yet, I still feel kind of cranky. Sabre team-mate that I was there with finds this to be the downside of my competitive streak. I ... I don't see the point of not being competitive and trying to get the best result you can get.
Oh well, hopefully I will improve in time for either the Ashton (if it's on), or the Leeds and the Leon Paul, as part of Plan Tremendously Stupid.
