I have now seen more pictures from Dune.

Most importantly, I have seen pictures of Liet Kynes.

Doesn't she look magnificent!

It is no secret that Liet Kynes is my favourite character in Dune, and I am pleased to see they're doing him justice, in the photos at least. Of all the characters, if there was one they could genderswap, to try and balance out the characters (not that the women of Dune aren't all ... I'd say awesome, but just as flawed and vivid as their male companions is more truthful), then Kynes is the easiest, because there's nothing about him or his story that needs him to be male.

I've also found out that it's going to be 2 films, which might explain why they haven't revealed who Feyd Rutha is. On the other hand, he's important background for the plot and explaining the Baron Harkonnen's motives, so yeah, I remain dubious. Because that scene where the Baron watches Feyd Rutha fight is important, not just for the Baron's "be still my beating [redacted for the good of mankind]" at the sight of Feyd's body. It's so we know that although Feyd Rutha looks nice and, unlike the beast Raban, has manners, hygenie and charm, he's still a Harkonnen and enjoys fighting slaves who are drugged so they're no harm to him to make himself look good. It presages the end duel. You kinda need Feyd in the first half, if only for two scenes.

I also continue to withold my fuller opinion until I see Fremen eyes.

I think Dune might be just the right film for Timothee Chalamet, because Paul is supposed to look scrawny, lost and slightly confused. I can already hear Gurney Halleck shouting at him.

I mock with some affection, I think Chalamet’s going to knock the Jamis scene out of the park. Although I am bemused by the lack of name for someone, anyone playing Feyd Rutha.

I am withholding any sensible comment on Dune until I see one of the Fremen.

Well, it was far better than last year, which was boring, an unforgivable sin, to my mind anyway.

Some thoughts )

But yes I enjoyed it.

I shall leave it to you to imagine the dolphin noises made over the Torchwood trailer.

The Ballet Shoes was exactly what it said on the tin, which would explain why, despite what the Radio Times thinks, there are girls amongst us who haven't read it. I enjoyed it, despite the icky romance and the fact that the only one I thought had any decent ambition was Petrova, even if it was most unfortunate that they had Emma Watson playing the character who wanted to act. I did love Posey most of all in the end, if only because I have a love of tiny brats who are fully aware that they have no conscience what so ever (see also the Abomination St. Alia).

There were unfortunate moments of romance, and they appear to have found the only hair colour ever that Marc Warren can't carry off. It's also unfortunate that playing romantic leads is not exactly his strong point.

My family make me emo. I don't think that's exactly news. But my girl cousin makes me want to shake her by the shoulders and make her eat something. She's practically wasting away and while I am aware that shaking her is going to do no good, I want to do something and I have no idea what.

Book review:

The Eye of Osiris by R. Austin Freeman, a Dr. Thorndyke novel )

No unsuggestions, not enough people have it. Why is beyond me, because it's such a well constructed murder mystery. Seriously, if you like CSI, you will adore this, it's 1910s style.

If you hate CSI, you might well love this.

Dune is one of the best books ever written. I was reading it on the train and the world in there seems more real than the world out here.

Leicester have decided not to appeal against the semi-final decision. Which is good. Because it means there is a team I can support wholeheartedly in the Powergen final. Go Gloucester.

Schumacher M. is bound to win the championship again this year which means that he'll have more World Championships than Fangio. And as a mark of the man, Schumacher said that no matter how much he won, he would never be in Fangio's league.

This is why I love him. Yes, he's arrogant at times, but that'll happen when he can wipe the floor with the challengers. But have you noticed that when the challenger is worthy (Hakkinen, Raikkonen, Ralf) he treats them with respect unlike certain other drivers I can mention.

Of course you can tell that the F1 season is about to begin because Coulthard has made his yearly, 'this will be my year' speech. It never is, but I enjoy his defeat. Not because I dislike him, but because there's something so bitter and vituperative about his character that he makes me dislike him.

And Williams have their usual infighting, not to mention that Jacques Villeneuve has once again pissed off his teammate (Jenson Button this year so good on you Jacques)

It's the same old same old even with the changes which will hardly change anything.

Just general note, if I'm gabbing about F1 Schumacher will always be Michael, and Ralf Schumacher is always just plain old Ralf. Because he's the younger one. Fisicella is Fisi, Raikonnen is Kimi Kimi and everyone else gets called by their actual names. If I mention Marvin, I mean Martin Brundel, not to be confused with Mark Blundell (They raced on the same team one year and the commentators were not pleased. Now they're both commentators themselves)

High pitch squeaking will be due to one of the following 1) Marvin interviewing Bernie Eccleston and getting one over him in the insults department, 2) Any appearance by Alex Wurz, Johnny Herbert, Jean Alesi or Gerhard Berger.

Alex Wurz somehow getting Coulthard's drive for the Austrian GP and somehow winning would results in ear piercing screams so be glad that that won't happen in a million years.
