1 - There were 5 (five!!) women in the Vienna Philharmonic

2 - A Brit came ahead of a Russian and a Swiss in a cross-country skiing race.

More completely, I had a blast watching Jools's Hootenanny last night as I always do. I would have felt sorry about making the mothership and grandmothership sit through it but the Dubliners (or rather, survivors and friends) were on so the mothership was happy and none of the other channels offered anything that she would have enjoyed more. There's really nothing on for people my Nan's age any more. Much though I like him, Graham Norton is not Grandma-suitable.

My Mum got me up to watch the Neu Jahrs Konzert this morning, which was pleasingly placid. Not sure about the second set of ballet though. The nearest theme that Mum and I could come up with was "ghostly weddings", which I suspect wasn't the intention.

After that came the 2nd of the Four Hills, where the Austrians were once again conspired against, particularly Wolfgang Loitzl. Not that I can particularly object to this set of Norwegians doing well because they are grade A adorable. It's just ... damn it, I'm Austrian, of course I want no-one but Austrians to win.

Following that came the cross-country with the aforementioned sign of the apocalypse. I then went upstairs to do a little fact checking, which lead to some wiki editing. The articles for Austrian ski-jumpers are sadly under-tended so I started to do some adding of material from the German language wiki. I enjoy that kind of thing entirely too much.

Then I watched the World's Strongest Man final which I enjoyed as I tend to. Well done Žydrūnas Savickas.

Posting as much to remind myself, but Czech guy (different to the usual one) just came out with the most wonderful thing I ever heard about music. "I was in the US for six months, and then I heard Smetana ..." There was a silence that spoke words.

I have gone with the Dame Joan Sutherland version, because my, what a voice she had.

Lehar was a master at this:

Classical music makes me very snobby and opinionated. It's a failing. Presently I am being obnoxious about Rolando Villazon. Because while I think he's adorable, I still don't think his voice is all that good, and his unfortunate facial expressions when he's acting do nothing for me.

That being said, I have just been introduced to the wonder that is Andre Rieu. And I know he's everything I should be snobby about but I don't care because I love it when someone decides to re-popularise waltzes and he's great fun.

Watched them on ITV. The TV version diddled me out of Julian Lloyd-Webber. I am not happy, because he is both good and a cellist so I want to see him on TV. Seriously, the cello needs to be more represented on TV.

(starts a campaign)

Other things I am annoyed about - the hype around Vittorio Grigolo. Now he's not bad. Indeed, he's quite good. But he's not all that. For example, he was performing 'Maria' from West Side Story. Which was all fine and good, except he kept taking these huge, obvious breaths, so huge that you could probably have heard them even if he hadn't been mic-ed up.

Later on, Placido Domingo was performing a duet with another new wonder tenor, whose name I can't for the life of me remember, and going for notes that he isn't quite as able to get as he used to and hence having to put quite bit of effort in. But, despite this, there were no huge breaths. Now, I'm not a good singer, but I know that part of the idea is not to let the audience know you're breathing, and that quite a bit of basic singing performance technique is in how to control your breathing so you don't end up gulping like a fish out of water. I find it hard to get behind the hype when the person in question is lacking something in such basic techniques.

Listening to Classic FM, they're taking a similar line to me on the Da Vinci Code, fun bit of nonsense, but they're loving Hans Zimmer's score. And I'm tempted to watch it just for that. Apparently, the producers were threatened with a 15 if they didn't get him to tone down the score. They capitulated and did so. So of course I want to hear the uncut soundtrack because I want to know what could be quite that freaky.

X-men III comes out on the day of my first exam so I'm waiting till the end of my exams to go see it. I'll text Emma and Danny to see if they want to come along with. ITV are of course scheduling X-men 1 against tonight's Dr. Who in a blatent and mean-spirited attempt to beat Dr. Who in the ratings. Does someone want to tell them that it won't work, because the side of right and good has Cybermen this week.

Other film related news - I may be nicer about the Order of the Phoenix film than it deserves as the director is from St. Helens. Yeah, I know, knock me over with a feather too.

The Cyberman episode )

As to the football, both FA Cups broke my heart, since West Ham and Gretna both lost. I was really hoping for upsets because, well, Teddy, Christian Dailly and Nigel Reo-Coker are hard not to cheer for, and because how fucking good would the story of Gretna winning have been.

If people can't tell from the style of writing I'm a bit sleep-deprived manic at the moment. I only went to bed at 2 in the morning and then I spent the night tossing and turning until Collapsing Dan woke me up at 7.15.

So I gave up trying to sleep and went fencing. County Team foil comp.

Was much fun. I now adore the Market Harborough team because, since they're mostly an epee club I've never met any of them before, and Loughborough Uni had a team turn up which was cool, because again lovely people, and it was an unexpected pleasure.

I had great fun, even if my team didn't win. Now trying to convince myself out of wanting to do county sabre next weekend because I should be revising. But there is a way round it. If I just do the individual not the team, I should be done by mid-day.

This is what temptation feels like.

Me and one of the fencers were talking last night and he would insist that Pavarotti was better, and that everyone would agree, therefore I am making a highly unscientific poll to see if it's true.

For what is just now yesterday.

It was kind of fun. I slept in till 11, I have no idea why but I was dead on my feet.

Got some money, some shiny bangels, one fantastically pretty silver bracelet from my Uncle who understands the kind of jewellery I like and has the best taste, and some more charms for my charm bracelet.

Then we went to see as Strauss gala. I was a bit worried about it beforehand but it was great fun. There was dancing and clapping and the orchestra (smaller than usual so probably far more authentic) was fantastic. I loved it.

However, I was actually quite disappointed in the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year concert. They went with a Mozart theme as it's the 250th of his birth this year and well damn it, I like New Years because it's the one time of the year that I get nearly uninteruppted Strauss. Today made up for it though.

Hence gratuitous icon space missuse :)

Saw some of last week's Smackdown and all I want to say is that if some guy hadn't listened when I said no, I wouldn't be suing him for sexual harrassment, I'd be down at the police station making a statement. Because no means no. I realise the WWE probably doesn't want to go there but sorry, this angle makes even less sense than most of the others.

Which Hindo Goddess Are you? quiz, nicked from biorhythm )

Have discovered why my emotions are all over the place. Dear body, it's called a cycle for a reason, it's supposed to be cyclical, not random shaped.

Other things:

OMG, there's a counter-tenor on the Last Night of the Proms. So very cool. Wonder what they're going to have him sing. Oh and John Williams is playing *that* guitar concerto by Rodrigo. I intend to enjoy myself immensly.

Going home tomorrow, which should be good. Will try and finish something, watch wrestling and beat the dragon I'm fighting on Neverwinter Nights.

Other than that, I'm not happy that Mary Pierce is in the US Open final, but this is a shock to no one.

AKA revision week update

Wrestling is invading my course, every time I hear the word evolution I think of the stable rather than the process.

Music rec - the Streets.
And PJ Harvey.

Every time I hear the beginning of the Anastacia song -"Left Outside Alone" I keep thinking that it's Evanesence.

I think I'm coming down with something just in time for the exams. Either that or my immune system is as depressed as I am about the Energy Flow module.

Okay that's two bands I like that are both from Iowa - Slipknot and the Killers (US Indie Rock). I highly recommend the Killers especially if you like the Strokes and all that, especially the song 'Mr. Brightside'.

Pachabel's Canon is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written.
Schubert is always a good thing.
Prokofiev's Capulet theme (or rather the Montague and Capulet tune) is also a thing of genius - even if every time I hear it I think of Yagudin's routine to it.
One massive plus of listening to Classic FM occasionally I get to hear the Vienna Philharmonika. It's not the most PC thing to say but they are the best orchestra out there.

Unfortunately when it comes to classical music I'm a conservative sort.

And I love listening to Maxim Vengerov.

More recs - Golden Touch by Razorlight.
Run by Snow Patrol.

Daniel Ratcliffe is being interviewed on Radio One right now, and he's just said something about managing to get Gary Oldman into Audioslave by playing it in the make-up bus. This amuses me greatly.

Apparently the director made them all write an essay about their characters, Harry wrote 1 page, Ron forgot and Hermionie wrote 16 pages.

[Re: asprin being a wonder drug and people prone to all kinds of illness should take one a day] What they don't say is that taking one asprin a day for years will also lead to intestinal inflamation and bleeding.

I've seen another snippet from POA, the important over-riding detail is that I want to hug Lupin. Even more so that usual.

Ready to smite my animal Energy Flow lecturer. He puts rhetorical questions into his lectures and doesn't answer them - case in point - he asks if pandas are releated to wolves, and then proceeds to talk about polar bears. Then there's the lecture titled Darwin's finches but what we got taught about was adaptive radiation in 3 spined sticklebacks.

I am in awe of Mynx's ability to write Evolution.

I think I may have to go on a classical music spending spree (note to self - Carl Jenkins)

Things which are scary - I can recognise Vengerov's playing without being told it's him. That's how good he is.

Got a date for Uni Challenge, it's the 11th of June which is the least convenient one it could have been.

Dear Nasser, don't quit in the middle of a test series, again! Actually his leaving speech was fantastic, and he was half the way to crying and even me and Nisha who aren't the biggest fans were going 'aww'.

Am ready to kill the people talking outside my window. They're also whistling.

Will also kill whoever it was that prank called me at 12.30 last night. This person must and will be found! Plus I kind of sprained my wrist on my writing hand so you can imagine how happy I am now. It sorted itself out before the exam though.

Smackdown )

Much better than expected.

Return of the King gets better on its second viewing.

There is a particular joy in the way bad vodka burns down your throat.

It is impossible to revise to a Strauss waltz.

I become less and less convinced of my ability to write in English and to count in any language.

Would various of my friends stop being Romeo and Juliet with the divide being Islam and bog-standard Britishness.
