Is good old fashioned stupid fun.
I don't know if it's because I came in with really low expectations, but I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to.
It doesn't do anything earth-shattering or all that innovative (all innovation is saved for the SFX). I don't know if it's because I read and watch a lot of comic books/comic book films, or because they set everything up in advance with all the subtlety of a brick, but the plot went exactly where I expected it to go, down to all but the most particular details.
It's very predictable.
But also enjoyable (provided you have the same high tolerance for stupid as me).
Evangeline Lily is the best thing in this. Her Hope Pym is spectacular. She's annoyed, frustrated and sick of her Dad's BS, but still loves him, the way you do with exasperating relatives. And she was unrecognisable, very much Hope, not someone playing her (to the point that I had to wait for the end credits to figure out who the actress was).
Michael Douglas is also excellent as Hank Pym. He's infuriating and interesting, and self-centred and just about good enough to be a hero. I can see why they got Michael Douglas in to play him.
Paul Rudd is coasting on charm, but since that's what the character does too, I'm not going to complain. Am deeply amused that team minor criminal who are supposed to be broke have a nicer flat than me. Also, I have been to the Tenderloin, it's a lot scuzzier than the film makes it look (although, bonus points that I can identify which road they're supposed to be on without them saying).
It's interesting that they're finally making a daughters and fathers film after three male heroes (and one villain) whose fathers are important for their story. Because of course Cassie loves HorrorBunny more than anything else, Daddy gave it to her. (Also, bonus points for Cassie being the most adorable small person.) Given what Hope has to put up with, and how much fun Howard Stark seems in the beginning bit, all those who think Tony is just whinging say 'aye'. (The age make-up for Peggy is much better this time.)
I really liked that they didn't make the stepfather character evil. Yes, you think he's a dick at the start (and he does some very dickish things) but it becomes clear that he'd do anything to keep Cassie safe, and part of Scott Lang's character growth is to realise that and that he's not been fair to either Cassie or his ex-wife.
I knew Antony was going to die the minute he got a name.
Darren Cross is an interesting villain, especially as Hope (who I believe on these matters) thinks it's exposure to the Pym Particles that's driven him froot-loops. The Yellow Jacket advert is a fine piece of satire (also that, and the very realistic problems Scott has getting a job make me think that people who say this is one of the "light" Marvelverse films are idiot, and that one of us may have been involved in the script). Every scientist watching this smiled at the idea that our labs are anything like that nice. And hello Martin Donovan, Hollywood appears to be using you for middle-aged corporate evil doers atm, but it's nice to see you. I like his presence of mind in the middle of the fight.
Team Minor Criminal are love. Admittedly I may be saying this because all my stories are like Luis's. Seriously, advanced warning, complaints have been made that when I tell stories people get genealogies as though it were Homer. Also even if I may mock WTF Kurt's accent is (it doesn't even achieve random Eastern European variant 5 levels of bad, it is horrible), I do like him.
You can tell Marvel has been listening to complaints about collateral damage because Luis (and this proves he is <3) saves the security guard at great personal risk, and Scott does his level best to use non-lethal force.
The end fight is a work of demented genius. Really. As in, I recognise the work of Adam and Joe in this. Also, how cool is it that two geeks who re-enacted Star Wars with cuddly toys on Channel 4 when I was a kid are now making superhero films for real. It's awesome.
I love dog-ant. And that Cassie keeps him as a pet. And did I mention that Cassie is wonderful.
In which an entire audience, or what was left of it, was cheered to know that Hope also gets her suit.
Just don't think to much about the science. It's particularly bad movie science.
I do, however, want my own army of ants. (I have already been told no by my mother, via facebook, because ... I have an odd life.)
I loved it and thought the SFX were great but D that I watched it with thought that the SFX were too obviously CGI. So enjoyment maybe suspension of disbelief related and I suspend very easily.
In which I wave my hands like crazy, have to explain myself to D, and holy hell, they're doing Civil War, they're doing it properly and OMG!
I really love that Sam, on finding Bucky, goes 'this would have been a whole lot easier a week ago,' so we know that everything is on the line and, as I said, they're going to do it properly!
